A small unit Falcons will head to the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to battle for individual and team titles, Dec. 2-3, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Bouts will start at 9:00 a.m. PT, on both days. The CKLV will host some of the toughest in-season competition on the Falcons slate. Eight ranked teams will be in attendance to include three top-ten teams in No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Virginia Tech and No. 8 Cornell. Big 12 rivals Iowa State, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley, West Virginia and Wyoming will also be in attendance. Service academy rivals Army and Navy will be battling for titles alongside Air Force. In Fort Hays, Kan., another contingency of Falcons will battle with wrestlers from 31 teams for individual titles at the Bob Smith Open hosted by Fort Hays State. Bouts are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. CT, and are expected to go all day. LAST TIME AT THE CLIFF KEEN INVITATIONAL: Then-senior team captain Josh Martinez concluded with a 3-3 tournament record and an eighth place finish in the 133 class. Martinez met with four-time all-american in number two seed, Nahshon Garrett of Cornell University. Martinez dropped an 11-3 major decision to the 2016 national champion and entered the consolation bracket. Martinez defeated Joey Palmer of Oregon State to win a 9-6 decision. In the consolation round of four, Josh Alber topped Martinez with a 3-2 decision and sent him to the seventh place bout against Mack McGuire of Kent State University. The Falcons, who are now 1-1 in their overall dual slate, fell to No. 9 North Carolina State, 29-6, and picked up a win, 29-9, over UNC-Pembroke. Team captain Jerry registered four decision victories and a fall en route to a runner-up finish in the Wolfpack Open, Sun., Nov. 20 in NC State s Carmichael Gym. The Falcons saw four place-winning finishes on the event with, Parker, Alex and Drew all finishing in the top-eight of their respective weight classes. Air Force also registered four place winners in the UNK-Holiday Inn Open over the same weekend. Senior 125-pounder Cassidy led the second contingency of Falcons with a fourth place finish in the tournament s elite division. went 2-2 on the day. Sam and Robert Walker checked in at sixth place in their respective weight classes; also in the elite division. went 4-3 en route to his finish, while Walker went 3-2. In the amateur division, Adam finished fourth in the 157 class; he went 3-2 on the event. NEXT UP: Air Force will see a small break in action during the month of December. Last season, was ranked in W.I.N. Magazine s polls for seven weeks. He held his highest ranking of No. 17 for two weeks. Sophomore 165-pounder Alex dropped out of the national rankings. Last week he was No. 20 in The Open Mat s national polls. The ranking marks s first career appearance in all national collegiate polls. He was in the national rankings for two weeks. WELCOME BACK: Air Force wrestling returns two NCAA qualifiers, two Big 12 Championship place winners, six dual meet starters, 12 letter winners and 28 total teammates from last season. Junior 125-pounder Drew punched his first ticket to the NCAA tournament last season in the wake of his seventh place finish at the Big 12 tournament. Dylan was a 2012 national qualifier in the 133 class following his title in the NCAA West Regional championships. Big 12 Championship sixth-place finisher Michael Billingsley also returns to the Falcon ranks at 174 pounds. The Falcons will likely see some familiar faces in this year s dual meet squad as six wrestlers from last year s starters are chasing top spots. Drew (125), Dylan (141), Jerry (149), Alex (165), Anthony McLaughlin (197) and Parker (197) claimed the majority of last season s starts. RECRUITING LEADERS: Air Force added 11 freshmen to the ranks in what became the highest ranked recruiting class in program history according to W.I.N. Magazine s 2015-16 recruiting rankings. Air Force wrangled in the 19th best freshman class in the nation and boasts the most notoriety of any Falcon wrestling recruiting class to date. The class of 2020 is made up of three state champions, four NHSCA All-Americans, two NCWA All-Americans and one NCWA national champion. THE CHAIN OF COMMAND: Head wrestling coach Sam Barber enters his third season at the reins of Air Force wrestling. Barber first joined Air Force wrestling as an assistant coach under head coach Joel Sharratt in 2009. He is assisted by Bart Horton (10th season) and Chris Heilman (third season). The volunteer assistant coach for this season is Dustin Kilgore. Kilgore is a four-time MAC champion, three-time All-American and the only national champion Kent State has ever produced. Parker and Jerry have been named team captains for the 2016-17season. led last season s team in dual points (42), dual wins (10), and started in every dual meet in the 197 class. The Ellsworth, Wis., native logged 20 wins last season; second most on the team. He placed eighth at the Southern Scuffle, second at the All Academy Championships and third at the Cowboy Open. registered 19 dual meet points in six wins for the Falcons last season. He earned a third place finish at the 2015 West Regional Championships. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native started in 12 of 14 dual meets last season. He placed second at the Cowboy Open and the All Academy Championships last season. GOING BIG IN THE BIG 12: The Falcons are part of six wrestling programs (Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming), all formerly comprised of the Western Wrestling Conference, which have agreed to become a part of the Big 12 starting in the 2015-16 season. The Falcons will see Big 12 dual action against Utah Valley, Wyoming, South Dakota State, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado this season. Last season the Falcons met with Big 12 foes Wyoming, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Northern Colorado; picking up wins against Utah Valley and Northern Colorado. In their first Big 12 Conference championship in program history, Air Force would see two wrestlers on the Big 12 podium and a third with a top-eight finish. Then-team captain Josh Martinez led the Falcons with a fifth place finish while Michael Billingsley and Drew finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Air Force finished seventh in the Big 12 regular season and ninth at the Big 12 Championships. THE ROAD TO THE NCAA S: The Falcons will see action in 12 dual meets, six open tournaments, three invitational tournaments and the Big 12 Conference wrestling tournament. Five events will be hosted at USAFA; four dual meets will take place in Clune Arena and the U.S. Collegiate Championships will be held in the center gym of Cadet Gymnasium. Air Force will square off against North Carolina State for the first time in program history in the Wolf Pack Duals, Nov. 19, in Raleigh N.C. The Falcons will be sending wrestlers to the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Southern Scuffle; considerably two of the toughest national invites in the NCAA. ON THE MAT AND IN THE BOOKS: Team captain was credited with NWCA Academic All-American honors last season. Air Force returns two Academic All-Big 12 first team members in and Dylan and Academic All-Big 12 second team member. Last season the Falcons saw five wrestlers on the Superintendent s list, three on the Commandant s list and eight on the Dean s list. Last year Adam Jackson was named Big 12 Winter Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Jackson, a pre-med major, held a 3.89 grade point average and was named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling First Team. Awarded the Health Professions Scholarship Program scholarship in April 2015, he currently studies at the University of Minnesota Medical School. CLIFF KEEN LAS VEGAS INVITATIONAL & BOB SMITH OPEN DEC. 2-3 AIR FORCE WRESTLING NOTES FALCON TIDBITS: During his tenure at Augsburg, Sam Barber s Auggies never finished below third place at the NCAA Division III championships, winning national titles in 2002, 2005 and 2007. In 2006, Barber was named the Division III Co-National Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Additionally, he coached 16 national champions and 60 All-Americans prior to coaching at Air Force, including a spectacular 2005 season in which 10 Augsburg wrestlers earned All-America honors on their path to the national championship. Barber s resume extends to the international stage where he was the head coach of the 2015 Junior Pan American Greco team, which finished second in competition. In 2012 he coached the FILA Cadet Pan American Freestyle team and the 2013 FILA Junior Pan American Freestyle team, which both captured gold medals; testament to his coaching ability across the wrestling arts. Barber is also responsible for coaching Jesus Wilson, who placed second in the 1999 World Team Trials. Assistant coach Bart Horton spent nine years as the first assistant coach at Missouri where he assisted in coaching Hodge Trophy winner and two-time national champion Ben Askern. Assistant coach Chris Heilman was a three-time All-American during his time at Cornell College. He is credited with a significant role in Air Force s highest ranked recruiting class to date. Falcon wrestling's athletic physical trainer, Jerry, is a retired Lieutenant Colonel. His son Jerry III is the 2016-17 wrestling team co-captain. Dave and Robert Walker are identical twins; they are separated by a single graduation year as Robert attended the USAFA Prep school prior to joining the Air Force Academy. Josh and Alex Mossing are cousins; Josh s older brother Jason Mossing was a wrestler for Air Force, he graduated in 2015. Michael and Beau Billingsley are brothers; they both wrestle at 174 pounds. Two Falcons earned their way to the NCAA Championships in the famed Madison Square Garden, in New York, N.Y. The Falcons capped the regular tournament season with 51 place winners in nine national tournaments to include a top-eight individual finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational and two top-eight individual finishes at the Southern Scuffle.
