Workplace Impact of Mental Illness Major Depressive Disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15-44 An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older about one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year Serious mental illnesses (SMIs), which afflict about 6% of American adults, cost society $193.2 billion a year in lost earnings Behavioral health issues cause 217 million missed workdays annually Depression was identified as the most costly health condition among a group of 10 large employers when combining costs from medical, pharmacy, absenteeism, and presenteeism (Source: 2010 Disability Management Employer Coalition Report) 9

Who Should apply to be come an Instructor? A MHFA instructor is required to serve as a presenter, a facilitator, and most importantly an ambassador of the Mental Health First Aid USA program. There are several key components that make an instructor successful. First and foremost, it is required that an instructor candidate: Has general knowledge of mental health and substance use issues (i.e. is a mental health/substance use professional, has worked with individuals experiencing mental health disorders or is in recovery from mental illness or substance use disorders) Has experience teaching groups of adults Understands best practices in adult learning Has experience facilitating groups While the instructor training reinforces some of the skills and knowledge areas above, it is not designed as a substitute for prior knowledge and experience. 12

Educators, Administrators, School counselors, Police Officers, Veterans, Emergency Personnel Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Nurses Speakers, helpers in the community Those who work in the community to assist with person s with mental health Passionate adults wanting to help others in regards to mental health/substance abuse 13

Instructor Commitments When an individual becomes a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor, she or he is committing to teach the full 8-hour course with fidelity to the core program model and key messages. Instructors are responsible for almost all components of their trainings, including: Recruiting participants and securing a training location Collecting course fees Ordering manuals for all participants Preparing course materials Compiling local resources Providing participant evaluations to Mental Health First Aid USA In order to maintain instructor certification, instructors are required to: Teach their first course within six months of becoming certified Teach at least three courses each year Complete re-certification after 2 years Pass Quality Evaluation visits and assessments Maintain satisfactory participant evaluation scores Engage in instructor/course re-fresher activities as instructed 15

Prior to MHFA Candidate Instructor Registers Have candidate take the MHFA course Follow up with them afterwards: Questions and Concerns they might have Commitment (three trainings with LMHA with in a year 120 participants total) Confidence in ability to teach others Confidence in ability to teach MHFA and adhering to fidelity 16

How to fill out the MHFA Instructor Application to be insure registration is achieved MHFA application is 10 pages but only pages 4-10 need to be filled out and returned to the host of the training or National Council: Have applicant read the whole application Pages 1-3 - Explain details and commitment of the training (read only) Pages 4 - Pre Application: Am I ready to be an Instructor? (fill out and return to the host of the training or National Council) Pages 5-7 Application (fill out and return) Part I- Applicant Information Part II- Applicant Experience and Qualifications Part III- Understanding the Program Part IV- Strategic Plan for Implementation Part V- Instructor Reference Document (must be submitted with the application) Part VI- Candidate Form/ Signature Page (fill out supervisor & applicant Responses are scored so have the applicant fill it out accurately and completely Signature page on 10 applicant fills out along with their manager/supervisor Have the manager/supervisor read it over prior to you reviewing it The application can show successful candidates and weed out weak ones; use it to your advantage and don t forget to send it! 18

How to help applicants to be successful and to keep their certification Make sure you follow up with in 30 days to give them training dates Allow them to teach with someone, at least their first one Make sure you have correct Allow them to attend other instructor trainings to review Make sure you have correct info to follow up before they attend the training Remind them of the MOU/Contract and give them a year - a year in a half to complete, give a deadline Keep running lists incase of emergencies 22
