American Defeat in New York, Summer 1776 The British forced Americans out of New York City into New Jersey. Washington only had a few thousand tired, hungry, and badly equipped soldiers left. Many Americans thought the war was was hopeless. Inspiration to keep fighting came from Thomas Paine and Nathan Hale. Why was this battle important?

American Defeat in New York Thomas Paine inspired Patriots in his pamphlet called the The Crisis. These are the times that try men s souls. American spy Nathan Hale inspired Patriots at his execution with his famous last words, I regret that I only have one life to give for my country.

The Crisis These are the times that try [test] men s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink [run away] from the service of their country; but he that stands NOW, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

The British captured parts of South Carolina, including Camden and Charleston, and Georgia. Brutal fighting forced Americans to use guerilla tactics against the British. The Siege and Battle of Yorktown, Virginia October, 1781 The British army gave up control of the Carolinas and moved into Virginia. Washington s Continental Army and the French Navy blocked the British general, Charles Cornwallis by land and by sea in Yorktown, Virginia. With no way out, Cornwallis surrendered to Washington, ending the last major battle of the war. Why was this battle important?
