International Seminar on Disaster and Risk Management for Roads 1 st announcement 7 th - 9 th November 2018 - Hanoi Daewoo Hotel, 360 Kim Ma Street, Ha Noi, Vietnam General Introduction Seminar Overview: The PIARC international seminar on Disaster and Risk Management for Roads will be organized by the World Road Association-PIARC, Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam (DRVN), University of Transport and Communications (UTC), Viet Nam Road and Bridge Association (VIBRA) and the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (REAAA), in cooperation with the World Bank. The seminar will be held from 7 th to 8 th November 2018. This seminar is a part of the PIARC Programme of International Seminars. It will make the results of PIARC s work more widely known in Asia and meet the increasing demand of disaster and risk management in road operations in Viet Nam. It will bring together representatives of governments and related organizations as well as industry experts and reseachers from many countries to share knowledge and expertise, to exchange ideas and experiences, to transfer information and technology and to study a wide range of issues particularly related to disaster and risk management for roads. The seminar will be organized jointly by the PIARC Technical Committee E.3 Disaster Management and A.3 "Risk Management and Viet Nam Road and Bridge Association (VIBRA) and University of Transport and Communications. The REAAA will also be involved. The call for papers seeks submissions which address one or more of the following session themes: Introduction of risk and disaster management theory and techniques in the road sector Best practices in risk management associated with natural and man-made disasters and climate change in the road sector Best practices in contingency planning and response to natural and man-made disasters and climate change in the road sector Social acceptance of risks and their perceptions in road-related activities 1

Objective of Seminar The main objective of the seminar is to provide a platform for participants to exchange ideas on disaster and risk management in road operations and especially, the establishment and implementation of contingency plans and rescue. All the participants will share approaches that have been used to evaluate the risks and disaster associated with climate change, man-made disasters and security threats. In addition, participants will discuss the strategies that are being applied to reduce or mitigate the risks associated with these events, identify best practice, analyze relevant techniques, and study the factors affecting social reaction to risks in road-related activities and methods that are used to measure people s acceptance of risks. It is also an objective of the seminar to assist road authorities to efficiently and effectively undertake disaster and risk management. Methodology The sessions will held in such a manner in order to optimize the time available for the discussion of the themes, so as to generate dynamic and highly involved exchanges among the participants. Language The official language of this seminar will be English, and simultaneous translation to and from Vietnamese will be available during the seminar. Preliminary Seminar Programme The programme will consist of opening and closing ceremonies, four sessions including discussion and a technical visit on 9 th November 2018.
