At our Tucson (Arzona), Redmond (Washngton), and Duluth (Georga) facltes, we are focused on growng technology sector companes to help nvoke exctement among hgh school and college students. The Tucson faclty has a longstandng relatonshp wth the Engneerng Exploraton classes at Amph Mddle School, located n Tucson, AZ. Each January, volunteers from Unversal Avoncs wll vst the students to ntroduce an avaton-themed project that they wll develop over the course of a few months. At the end of ther project, we host the students at our faclty where they can see our manufacturng process and vst our arcraft hangar as part of ther tour. Addtonally, the students are gven the opportunty to present ther project to a group of Unversal Avoncs experts. The experts then select the top project and the wnners receve a much-antcpated flght n Paul DeHerrera s Cessna 172. Surely, a lastng memory that few students forget. Ths January marks our ffth year wth the program, whch we are proud to contnue. The worldwde shortage of qualfed avaton workers plots, techncans and engneers s well known n the avaton ndustry. It s the frst tme a helcopter company acheved ths honor, a sgnfcant accomplshment that marks a substantal foothold n the helcopter market. Hel-One brought forward several key specal msson programs n 2016, ncludng the Royal Malaysan Ar Force (S-61), Hs Majesty the Sultan of Johor (S-76) and German Federal Polce (AS332). These nstallatons promote ntegrated cockpts wth the EFI-890H Advanced Flght Dsplay and Flght Management System. Hel-One s customzed modfcatons are deal for helcopter retroft programs. Hel-One Norway s located n Stavanger, Norway - next to a major North Sea helcopter operator. The faclty also ncludes an EASA-approved (Part 21 J) Desgn Organzaton that recently celebrated ther 10-year DOA annversary. We are proud and honored to receve ths recognton. Even though ths recognton s for Hel- One, we consder ths as an award for our successful partnershp. The Desgn Team at Hel-One Norway, led by Tor Baustad, has done exceptonal work. The new systems and technology allow our customers to rejuvenate older arcraft wth new advancements, whch reduces operatng costs and adds value to the Edde Lane, fleet. GM European Operatons, Hel-One Feld Avaton has been makng ordnary arcraft extraordnary for over 70 years; 30 of those years wth Unversal Avoncs. In 2016, the company garnered two key programs that would prove to be man contrbutors to ther successful year; the U.S. Army s Arborne Reconnassance Low Enhanced (ARL-E) and the Golden Knghts. In addton, the flght deck modernzaton package for the classc Dash 8 / Q Seres arcraft, featurng EFI-890R Advanced Flght Dsplays, proved to reman strong. Ther success can also be contrbuted to ther engneerng and producton teams extensve experence and expertse to meet operator requrements; desgn, manufacture, ntegraton, flght testng and cvl certfcaton of unque nteror and exteror modfcatons to arcraft systems and structures. At Feld, standard passenger turboprop and jet arcraft are transformed nto specalzed operatons platforms, prmarly for martme patrol, search and rescue, and ntellgence gatherng mssons. The company has two locatons n Canada; an arcraft modfcaton and avoncs center n Toronto, and an aerospace parts manufacturng faclty n Calgary. Unversal Flyer servngfor the long term 1983 Unversal s Longest Tenured Employee Retres After 33 Years On September 26th, our longest-tenured employee, Dave Upchurch, packed up hs desk at the end of the workday and kcked-off hs retrement. Dave was the go-to guy for over 33 years at Unversal Avoncs, mantanng an n-depth knowledge of everythng Unversal ever bult, ncludng felded products datng back to the ncepton of the company n 1981. Workng n Sales and Sales Admnstraton throughout hs tenure, Dave handled outsde and nsde sales, order entry and delvery coordnaton, and much more n-between, dong anythng that was asked of hm... especally n the early years of the company. In 1983, Dave drove from Unversal Avoncs frst offce n Torrance, Calforna down to ArResearch Avaton s faclty n Long Beach, Calforna; just a short dstance of 15 mles. ArResearch would be nstallng the very frst Unversal UNS-1 Flght Management System (FMS) n Southland Corporaton s Falcon 50. At the tme, the delvery ddn t seem too hstorcal; there was no fanfare, bg bands or photo shoots. To Dave, he was just a new, 26-year old employee puttng some equpment nto the back of hs car to drop off to a customer. Many years later, after Unversal became establshed and successful, Dave would realze the hstorcal sgnfcance of that frst delvery. From Startup to Industry Leader Lfe of the UNS-1: Unts Delvered Over 35 Years 1983 1987 1 st FMS 130 UNS-1 800 UNS-1 The early days of Unversal were tremendously exctng and rewardng, but lke many other start-up companes, only tme would tell f they d ultmately become successful. Everyone, ncludng Dave, would work long hours, sometmes through the nght. Intently focused on buldng the nfrastructure for the sale and support of the flagshp UNS-1, early employees lke Dave found that the days, months and years would fly by. Almost 27 years after that fateful Long Beach trp to ArResearch, Dave would personally delver the 20,000th FMS sold to Feld Avaton at the Natonal Busness Avaton Assocaton s (NBAA) Busness Avaton Conventon and Exhbton (BACE). In addton to beng well-known n the ndustry, Dave was just as admred wthn the company. Throughout hs tenure, Dave mentored a multtude of new Unversal Avoncs employees, provdng them wth faclty tours and sharng company hstory. Everyone enjoyed hearng hs stores throughout hs tme wth Unversal Avoncs, such as meetng celebrtes lke Elzabeth Taylor, Farrah Fawcett, Ryan O Nel, Nel Armstrong, and move producer, Sydney Pollack, as well as many founders of large corporatons.
