MANITOBA CENTRE FOR NURSING AND HEALTH RESEARCH (MCNHR) GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT FOR NURSES PREAMBLE: The Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR) is pleased to offer graduate student research grants for nurses through the generous support of both the College of Nursing Endowment Fund and the Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Fund. Successful applicants to this competition will be awarded either a College of Nursing Endowment Fund Graduate Student Research Grant or a Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant. The MCNHR anticipates being able to fund 4-6 grants in the 2016 competition. PURPOSE: COLLEGE OF NURSING ENDOWMENT FUND, GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT The College of Nursing Endowment Fund Graduate Student Research Grant for nurses provides funding to support the costs associated with thesis or dissertation research projects. This grant was established in 2014 with funding committed by the College of Nursing Endowment Fund to support requests for applications for 2016 competition. Masters students are eligible to request up to $3,000 to support their thesis research projects and PhD students are eligible to request up to $5,000 to support their dissertation projects. PURPOSE: KATHLEEN AND WINNIFRED RUANE, GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT Ms. Kathleen Ruane has established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba to support nursing students academic and research objectives. A portion of the annual income from the fund will be used to offer up to two research grants, valued at $3,000 for Masters students and $5,000 for PhD students called the Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant, to support the costs of conducting research for a thesis or dissertation. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Graduate student research grants for nurses will be awarded on an annual basis to graduate students who: 1. Are either a Registered Nurse or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse; 2. Are enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in the College of Graduate Studies in either a Master s or Doctoral Program and whose academic supervisor holds a salaried academic appointment in the College of Nursing, University of Manitoba; 3. Requests for full funding of a project will be given higher priority than requests for partial funding. If requests are for partial funding, applicant must explain their plans to secure additional funding to ensure their projects will be successfully implemented. 1

FUNDING GUIDELINES: 1. Funding to a maximum of $3,000 for masters students and $5,000 for PhD students will be provided for 18 months. Applications requesting more than $3,000 for masters students and $5,000 for PhD students will not be considered. If, at the end of 18 months, the funds are not expended and the project is not completed, consideration will be given to the applicant s request to extend the termination date for one additional year. A request for extension of the grant must be made to the Director of the MCNHR at least one month prior to expiry of the grant. If funds are not expended or the project is terminated, all remaining funds will be returned by the MCNHR. 2. Funding is to cover direct research costs only, which may include personnel, equipment, supplies, travel for data collection purposes, and travel to one conference (to a maximum of $1,000). Any equipment purchased is the property of the University of Manitoba. No portion of the grant is to be used for salary for the graduate student or the academic supervisor. 3. Grant funds will be administered by the MCNHR, and the graduate student s academic supervisor will have signing authority on the grant. 4. Receipt of funds is conditional upon approval of the research proposal by the Education/Nursing Research Ethics Board, University of Manitoba. (http://www.umanitoba.ca/research/ors/ethics) Ethics approval must be obtained within 6 months of the approval of the award date, or the grant will be forfeited. A three month extension of this requirement will only be provided if applicants have submitted their ethics application and are awaiting approval. 5. A final project report and a statement of expenditures must be provided to the MCNHR at the end of the grant term. Students who receive funding will also be required to present their project within 6 months at a MCNHR organized event such as the MCNHR Research Seminar Series, MCNHR/WHRA Research Day or Graduate Student Poster Competition. 6. Publications and presentations arising out of the research must acknowledge the funding support of the College of Nursing Endowment Fund Graduate Student Research Grant or the Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant. 7. Research grants must be used for the project and purposes described in the application. Grant -holders wanting to transfer funds from one budget category to another in response to changing research needs or to use funds for a new budget item must secure the prior written approval of the MCNHR. 2

APPLICATION PROCESS: One complete electronic copy of the application is required. The graduate student and their academic supervisor must complete the research grant application form and append a description of the project, not to exceed 5 typewritten, single spaced pages, exclusive of appendices, font size 12 points. The research proposal should address: Statement of the Research Problem/Purpose/Objectives Review of the Literature Conceptual Framework (if applicable) Methods: Design, Sample, Setting, Measurement, Procedure, Time Frame Data Analysis Plan Dissemination Plan Significance for nursing Appendices should be limited to relevant support documents such as copies of data collection forms and consent forms References Applications are due April 1, 2016. Applications are to be submitted in electronic form only. Please email a single electronic file of your completed application including proposal and other attachments to the MCNHR. Email your application to: mcnhr@umanitoba.ca REVIEW PROCESS: 1. Applications will be reviewed by the MCNHR Research Grant Review Committee. Proposals will be assessed on the basis of: i. - Scientific merit ii. - Significance for nursing 2. A rank list based on the score of applications will be prepared by the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR) Research Grant Review Committee. The rank list and recommendations for funding will be provided to the Director of the MCNHR for approval. A portion of the total competition budget amount is allocated to each successful application starting from the top of the ranking list until the total competition budget is expended. 3. Successful applicants will be awarded either a) the College of Nursing Endowment Fund Graduate Student Grant or b) the Kathleen Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant. Successful applicants can not hold both awards. 4. All applicants will be notified of the results by May 30, 2016 3

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: The deadline for receipt of applications is April 1, 2016. The graduate student s academic faculty supervisor will be considered as the principal applicant.
