Equipment Cleaning Guidelines Template All patient care equipment must be wiped down and disinfected between each patient. The recommendations for /disinfecting frequency listed below are the minimal standards for : Contact times for disinfectants: Please refer to product label for manufacturer s recommended time. It is important to always allow the solution to air dry. Reapplication may be necessary to meet the required contact time. URMC/Highland: Dispatch = 1 minute (inpatient setting) Virex = 5 minutes Caviwipes = 3 minutes (outpatient setting) All portable equipment and equipment that will travel from patient to patient is to be cleaned in the patient s room or in the hallway. If equipment cannot be cleaned and disinfected immediately it should be removed to the Soiled Utility area until it can be cleaned and disinfected. Each hospital will identify a method to identify clean vs. dirty equipment o bagged or tagged to identify clean and ready for use. o At Highland after equipment is sanitized, a tape is applied identifying a clean item. All equipment is cleaned with hospital approved disinfectant/wipe and the disinfectant is allowed to remain on the item for the manufacturer-recommended contact time. Blood and Body Fluid Spills Each unit or department must ensure that all spills are wiped up immediately (PPE must be worn to do so) and then cleaned with an EPA and hospital approved disinfectant. /Wipe A disinfectant that has been approved for use by the Infection Prevention Committee. Bleach wipes should be used for patient care equipment unless otherwise contraindicated in the inpatient setting Unit-specific items will be cleaned according to procedures and schedules maintained on the unit.
