ANCHOR WATCH ce our Change of Watch is at the end of March, we will not have an April general meeting. We are planning a Social Gathering for May; an informal get together without a formal presentation. Look for you May Anchor Watch to get the time and dae.a Stamford Sail and Power Squadron --- Stamford, CT--- February 2012 http://www.usps.org/localusps/stamford/ Commander s Message It is not as cold here in Jacksonville Florida as it is at home, but not warm enough to be fun. So instead I find myself attending faithfully the USPS National Meeting. Going to national is fun but more than that it is invigorating. All the people dressed up (around 700) in uniform and working all over the nation on behalf of USPS. I said it before, if you get the chance to do it, you should come at least once! The main issues revolve around education, especially on the water integration. Equally as important is the updating of all the course materials. Many committees meet to get their work done. At the meeting our George Hallenbeck was elected to the national Bridge as a Lieutenant Flag Officer in charge of Electronics education. Congratulations George! Many of the D2 District officers were in attendance including the whole D2 Bridge. D/C Lacey Williams threw us a great dinner on Friday night. We had a great time and better, a chance to get to know each other. During the meetings I took 2 Leadership courses, each a day long. They were long and tiring, but well worth it. Susan Darcy taught one and she was the best! They not only provided insights into running the squadron, but valuable life lessons as well! I also was educated into the NOAA charting database and was given a number and password to be able to enter data in the future. I had heard that the CO-OP charting program was defunct because NOAA was not taking data. This is wrong, they very much want us to continue to help them. Because of legal issues, they now have to go out and verify the data, but our work guides them to the problem areas. Some squadrons have put together Early First Responder Teams that monitor radio and respond to alerts. Then go out and help the distressed vessel. I asked about this treading on the USCGAUX, but they said the CG and the AUX were glad to have them available. I spent most of my time in the education meetings this year, trying to see what was going to define us for the next year or two going forward. Like us, they are very concerned about membership and how it interacts with the ABC class and follow up classes. There was a lot of discussion on Online courses and how to capture people taking them into the squadrons. George will update us at the next meeting. I wanted to share what I was doing with you, to show you that the squadrons are active and National is really working on all our problems. We will survive and thrive. Next I want to discuss the general monthly meeting and it s time. We always had it on Monday s at 7PM. (Continued insude) Save the Date - Our 2012 Change of Watch Dinner Will be held at the Stamford Yacht Club On Wednesday, March 21 Some details are still being worked out, so watch for your invitation

Commander s Message (Continued from front page) When I took over as Commander only the board and a few others would show, even that dwindled. Monday was a great night in the old society, but not in our modern world, especially for families with children going to school. It has taken a while to find a new spot but we seem to have settled down on the Third Wednesday night of each month at 7 PM. We now need to make this regular, and punctual. With our new Admin Vivian working on this with speakers and informative events, we hope to build these up to great meetings people want to come to. We will continue to do some joint meetings with local squadrons, as getting good speakers is also a responsibility to them to provide a good audience! I would like you all to look ahead at the speakers and try to attend. We will use SailAngle to put a message out to you all. My last discussion today will be on SailAngle itself. What SailAngle does for you and USPS is keep the emails and information we put out private. We get this service for free (most others have to pay to use a service like this). It is far from perfect and I am the first one to admit that. I know many of you do not like it as it is harder to use than some of the more open free services. At the same time it is more protected and it gives you a reason to go on SailAngle and check out what is going on in National, District and USPS in general. It is a social networking tool that the younger generation not only accepts but is enthralled with! It is the future. National has committed to using it and we should try to do this too. We already have a date for the COW on Wednesday, March 21 st, 2012, mark it on your calendar and come! It will be at Stamford Yacht Club, a great venue with good food and an elegant surroundings. -Cmdr. Gino Bottino At the Founder s Day Dinner At our December 15 dinner, we did more that meet with friends. We also saluted our instructors, who do some of our Squadron s most important work. Below, Squadron Education Officer George Hallenbeck (right) recognizes Al Hebert. Next page, left to right, we have Anne Peskin, Chester Lowe and Bob Nelson. On a lighter note, next down on the left, Debbie Benedetto is presented with the prize for the Texas Hold um Contest at the D2 Rendezvous. Education To sign up or get more information on any of our classes, contact George Hallenbeck at gwlk@aol.com or 203 348 7121. Descriptions of courses can be found at http://www.usps.org/national/eddept. America s Boating Course (Basic Boating) In progress, meeting Tuesdays at Rippowam at 7PM. The current schedule has the final exam on April 10, with graduation April 11. Piloting This course covers near-shore navigation, including manual and electronic plotting, aids to navigation and GPS. Revised schedule: It will start February 27 at 7:30, on the 2 nd floor of the Government Center at Tresser and Washington Boulevards. Seamanship The suggested next course after Basic Boating teaches practical marlinespike, navigation rules, hull design and performance, responsibilities of the skipper, boat care, and what to do in various emergencies and weather conditions. Starts February 8 at 7:30, at the Marine Center on Magee Ave. (Behind Animal Control.) Teachers needed for the Children s safe Boating Program George and Anne are overwhelmed with requests for the program at different schools. We need teachers. To be a teacher you need to follow the course material, have studied it beforehand, and go with Anne or George at least 2 times for mentoring. Please consider helping with this important function for the kids. If you can spare a few hours to make the next generation of boaters safer, please contact Anne Peskin at 203 322 6641. -Cdr.
