Vol. 1 - Issue #4 July 015 Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Inc. Beta Omicron Times BETA OMICRON GRADUATE BROTHERS IN THIS ISSUE Message from the Regent With another year, brings another bundle of unforgettable memories. From the new incoming class to the epic Variety Show, Beta Omicron of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. closes another chapter in its long, rich history. I have personally been part of Kappa Psi for two years now, and it makes me elated to see the progressions and improvements that happen over this period of time. Relationships deepen, policies improve, and the events become better run, and more memorable. Beta Omicron Chapter has consistently become a pillar for many of its Brothers to lean on in times of stress and pressure in pharmacy school. Our experiences and memories together highlight the positive points in our pharmacy school careers despite the underlying burden that comes along with being a graduate student. With so much improvement thus far and better things to come, I could not be more excited for next year where more memories will be crafted. Our Centennial celebration is on the horizon, and our Conclave is in the not-so-distant future, both of which are ambitious projects to say the least. There is, however, no doubt in my mind that our Brothers are up to the task and will host wonderful events. I have seen the upcoming board s first-hand level of passion and commitment to Kappa Psi, and it inspires and reminds of me of why I became a Brother in the first place. Have a wonderful summer and stay tuned to open a new chapter in the year 015-016. Community Events Brothers of Kappa Psi started this spring quarter by visiting seniors at Legacy House to provide a health talk on seasonal allergies. Many people are affected by seasonal allergies during spring and elderly patients are most affected by medications for allergies. We counseled them on what medications they should be taking and what medications to avoid due to side effects such as Benadryl and chlorpheniramine. Props were brought in to teach them the appropriate technique on how to use nasal spray products. We were happy to educate the elderly population on safe medication usage. Our next visit was at the UW campus to talk to aspiring pre-pharmacy students at Smith Hall. There are many eager students that are curious about the pharmacy profession and how to be successful applicants. The pre-pharmacy club had 30 students in the room listening to the advice and direction of Kappa Psi Brothers as they share their knowledge on how they got into pharmacy school. We understand the struggles of applying to pharmacy programs and we want to make the application process as smooth as possible for them. In addition, we visited the Ronald McDonald House to set up a movie night for the family that are staying there. Ronald McDonald House provides housing for children and their family affected by medical illness and are currently being seen by Seattle Children s Hospital. The movie we watched was Rise of the Guardians and we also provided snacks and drinks. Overall, we had a relaxing night with a lot of fun! We finished off this year by performing civic duty for our neighborhood. Brothers participated in our Adopt-A-Street project where we pick up litter and trash on the sidewalks of University Way NE. We succeeded and earned our Adopt-A-Street sign through years of hard work on enhancing the image of our neighborhood. Kappa Psi Annual Variety Show This year s rendition of the annual Kappa Psi talent show experimented with new ideas and broke new ground. Needless to say, it was a soaring success. With the UW School of Pharmacy again dazzling the audience with its overwhelming amount of talent, the show certainly did not disappoint eager fans. From the calculated synchronization of the Kappa Psi Step Team, to the soothing ballad of Shirley Quach, to the epic finish by Acid Reflux, all the performances dazzled the audience members, proving once again that pharmacists and student pharmacists have plenty of talent and skill outside of pharmacy. The show also featured the Mr. Pharmacy contest, as a friendly competition amongst different classes. All three candidates displayed an impressive showing, but in the end, Matt Binder from PY took the Mr. Pharmacy crown and won the second years the Spirit Week contest. The addition of this competition supplemented the main acts with a fun narrative of who would be the candidate to save pharmacy school. Other fun activities featured the Low Chi/Rho Chi Bowl, and raffle drawings for great prizes. This year s Variety Show featured a promotional video, promotional posters and advertisements, as well as improved sound and light production. With steady and significant improvements made every year, I am more than excited to see what next year s Variety Show brings, as it s sure to blow minds and exceed expectations, as it has been that way every year. Social Events Sports Day Volleyball Social Although spring quarter was one of the busiest quarters for our Brothers in Kappa Psi, we had a great turnout for our social events. The social events helped strengthen our brotherhood within the Chapter, especially with the Brothers who would soon be graduating. Especially with the stress and unrelenting pressures of pharmacy school, the social events remind our Brothers that we can always rely on each other and look to other Brothers for support. For our Sports Day social event, we had a great turnout although the event was held in the midst of midterms. We had some talented Brothers who could lay down a groundbreaking spike in volleyball! We also promoted friendly competition between Brothers, as the losing team had to buy boba for Brothers of the winning team. This year, we also held a Boba fundraiser for the first time at Sharetea. Through much planning and hard work, we raised nearly $150. The proceeds will go on to fund the conclave. This event was a huge success and we plan on doing this fundraising event in the near future. After our final exams, we also held our annual End of the Year BBQ at Golden Gardens to celebrate the end of the academic year. Overall, all of the events we hosted this year strengthened our brotherhood within the Chapter and helped our Brothers stay connected to Kappa Psi during stressful times. Graduation Ceremony Though every year marks a class of new blood into the Fraternity, it also marks a tearful goodbye to our graduating Brothers, as they head off to their careers and exciting adventures. It has been a long and winding journey for all these Brothers of Kappa Psi, and we could not be more proud of them for what they have accomplished. Some will continue their education with a residency while others will start working immediately as pharmacists. The Kappa Psi Graduation Ritual celebrates their achievements and propels them forward to building their professional lives. Though the ritual was sweet and simple, many feelings and memories rushed back for new graduates and current Actives alike. Graduate Brothers sigh with relief as they reflect on the challenges they have overcome, while Actives look up to these Brothers for inspiration, knowing the obstacles that will come ahead. More importantly however, the entire Chapter reflected on all the wonderful memories the Graduates and Actives have shared together, knowing that our Chapter will never be the same without the Graduates. It s important to note that this is not the end for anything. It is only a fiery opener to new beginnings and news paths to be carved. We wish the Class of 015 the best of luck, and firmly remind that Kappa Psi will always be a part of them.
