MECHANIC II JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision keep all automotive equipment in good repair and operating condition, and to do other work as required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include but not limited to): 1. Performs all tasks of Mechanic I. 2. Assists the Head Mechanic in the operation of and in the purchasing for the garage. 3. Performs major rebuilding of all automotive equipment and component parts and assemblies. 4. Performs complex mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment. 5. Makes decisions as to the extent and type of repairs to be done on individual pieces of equipment. 6. Estimates costs of repairs. 7. Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and oil filters. 8. Operates gas pumps. 9. Cares for and maintains shop tools and equipment. 10. Keeps records of repair and maintenance work. 11. Operates bus in the event of repair or emergency. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Required: 1. Read, write, and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed. 2. Experience as an automotive mechanic, including experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. 3. Equivalent to completion of high school.
4. Three years experience in mechanical repairs and rebuilding of heavy automotive equipment and one year experience in supervision, which may run concurrently. Desirable: Knowledge of: 1. Theory and operation of internal combustion engines. 2. Maintenance, and repair of fuel, cooling, ignition, and electrical systems and automatic and standard transmissions. 3. Automotive maintenance and shop safety procedures. 4. State laws and regulations pertaining to required lights and equipment on all District vehicles exhibited by a current State license for brake and light repair and adjustment, and an installer s pollution control license. 5. Methods, practices, equipment, and supplies used in the operation and maintenance of a good school transportation system. 6. Working methods and procedures used in commercial garages and service stations. 7. Advanced garage work procedures, including major rebuilding of all component systems. 8. Safe work procedures and appropriate dress. 9. Shop and repair manuals and other reference literature for use in obtaining vehicle specifications. Ability to: 1. Diagnose mechanical difficulties and make necessary repairs. 2. Lift up to 50 lbs. 3. Follow oral and written instructions. 4. Work effectively with staff. 5. Obtain a valid California driver s license, either a Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate or passage of California Highway Patrol First Aid Test and a State of California Special Driver s Certificate to operate a school bus.
