The Modoc County Junior Livestock Show and Sale is the only livestock show in California that is planned, organized and conducted entirely by a Junior Show Board. Modoc County youth enrolled in 7th to 12th grades are eligible to serve a two year term. Two years prior experience showing and selling an animal at the Junior Livestock Show is preferred. 2013 Modoc County 4-H 4 H Record Book Competition Modoc County 4-H Clubs are invited to send their club-level gold seal 4-H Record Books to the 4-H Office by 5 pm on Thursday, October 17th for county-level judging. Record books received after this date/time will not be judged. Adult volunteers who would like to be a member of the county judging team should call Susie Stokke at 233-6400 by October 10, 2013 to indicate your interest and availability. County record books will be judged at the Farm Advisor s Office in Alturas between 9 am and 4 pm on Saturday, October 26th. We are looking for at least two teams of judges (3 judges per team). Saving the Fair One Star at a Time A $400 donation was made to the Modoc District Fair by Warren Clayton Johnson, a member of the Davis Creek 4-H Club. Johnson raised the funds through his 4-H Emerald Star Project Saving the Fair One Star at a Time. The stars were sold to individuals throughout the community who joined Johnson to support this year s fair during August 22-25, 2013. Danette DePaul, Modoc District Fair Manager, said: I am so pleased to accept this donation from Warren Clayton Johnson. As an active 4-H exhibitor at our fair, his support is truly appreciated. Did you know? Emerald Star Projects are proposed by 4-H members who have creative ideas for projects with long-lasting benefit to the community. What are your goals for 4-H this year? Have you thought about what you want to accomplish in 4-H this year? If you want to succeed, setting goals can help. Goal setting let s you take charge of where you want to go and helps you to know if you are making progress. Follow the five stars below and you will be on the path to success! 1 Are your goals truly important to you? When you set goals that are important to you, you are more likely to succeed. Choose goals that reflect your very highest priorities and limit them to those that are truly valuable and important. If you end up with too many goals, it can be overwhelming and leave you feeling disappointed and frustrated. Are your goals SMART? You may have already heard about SMART goals. How do you know if your goals are SMART? SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused and have a specified Timeframe. 2 3 Have you put your goals in writing? Writing your goals down makes them REAL. As you write, use the word will not would like to or may. Empower yourself and others by framing your goals as positive (not negative) actions. Have you developed an Action Plan? What are the steps you need to take to accomplish your goals? Write each step down. As you complete each step, cross it off. Now look back at your list...you are on the road to success! 4 5 Are you on track? Make time to review your goals. Are you making good progress? Or, do you need to make adjustments to get to where you want to go?

Specific is the what, why and how of the SMART model. What: I will increase my public speaking skills Why:...and become confident and assured How:...by giving at least three presentations in front of a variety of audiences Measurable goals give you the evidence that you have accomplished the goal. The essential metric is whether or not you are more confident and self-assured at public speaking by March 1, 2014. Achievable goals are defined well enough that you will know when you have achieved them. In order to achieve this goal, you must have a skill set in the area of public speaking. By giving at least three presentations in front of a variety of audiences, you have an opportunity to expand your skill set. As you practice and your skills expand, your confidence and assurance in front of a variety audiences will also grow. Results-focused goals measure outcome, not activities. The result of this goal is to improve public speaking skills and become more confident and assured as demonstrated by earning a Gold Medal at County Presentation Day. Timeframes help to convey a sense of urgency and produce a relevant outcome. March 1, 2014 (the date for 2014 Modoc County Presentation Day) provides you with a timeframe or due date. If you are enrolling in a Countywide Project, go back to the add club page and add Countywide to your club list. Once this is done, go to the Projects page and select the project you are enrolling into as countywide. (Make sure that for countywide projects, the project s club is listed as countywide) Click on Submit Enrollment This will take you back to the Member List page where you may Re-Enroll another family member. When you have finished adding/re-enrolling members, log off. Enrollment Fees Give your enrollment fee(s) to the Community Club Leader. For 2013-2014 4-H year, fees are $34.00 for members and $12.00 for adult leaders. Some projects may require a fee for participation. All expenses related to projects are the responsibility of the family. Fees are subject to change yearly.
