Prescription Writer is an application within Acute Care that allows providers to do the following: 1. Create and maintain a list of home medications 2. Electronically transmit new prescriptions 3. Convert listed home medications into prescription refills 4. View a history of changes for prescriptions and home medications Before eprescribing any medications, the provider must ensure that user preferences for facility is set up AND the patient s preferred pharmacy is entered in the system. To enter your user preferences 1. Click on the Rx writer icon 2. Click on the user preferences icon 3. Select the location you are practicing from. 4. Select the phone number that a pharmacist can contact you with any questions. 5. You only have to select the location and the phone number once. If the phone number or address listed in not correct or if you have a change in phone number/address please call 15757. 6. Click apply 7. Click close for the changes to register in Rx writer. 06/2013 Page 1 of 10
To enter the patient s preferred pharmacy 1. Select your patient 2. Click the Rx Writer icon 3. Click on the blue writing next to preferred pharmacy 4. Click on the icon. Enter the pharmacy name, state, and zip code. A list of pharmacies participating in eprescribe will display 5. If the pharmacy name has this icon next to it, it is not a participating pharmacy in esubscribe. If the patient wants to use their usual pharmacy, it can be selected. This will result in all prescriptions defaulting to print. 06/2013 Page 2 of 10
FYI: DO NOT USE THE ADD NEW SIGN TO FIND OR ADD NEW PHARMACIES. 6. Click on the patient s preferred pharmacy from the list. If the patient s pharmacy is not a participating pharmacy, the Provider should print all prescriptions. 7. Click on the add to prefferred icon 8. Click on close To enter a prescription for a patient: 1. Select your patient from the patient list. 2. Click the Rx Writer icon 3. Once the Rx Writer dialogue box opens up, click on the enter prescription icon. 06/2013 Page 3 of 10
4. If your user preferences are set to favorites, you will see the above list. 5. Pick the category you would like to select your prescriptions from (full catalog, quick list, favorites). 6. Failure to enter all required fields will result in an error for esubmit. a. Dose b. Dosage Units c. Route d. Frequency e. Days f. Refills g. Quantity** h. Dispensed Unit 7. Medications on the favorites list have most of those fields pre-filled. 06/2013 Page 4 of 10
8. If you need to add more medications, click add to list 9. When you are finished adding all prescriptions, Click Review and Submit. The following screen will appear 10. If your user preferences is defaulted to esubmit, the prescriptions will default to esubmit. Schedule drugs are not eligible for eprescribe, they will default to Print. 06/2013 Page 5 of 10
11. If the patient does not want to participate in eprescribe/esubmit, the Provider can manually change the submit method to print. This will change the submit method for the entire list OR Pick a different method for each prescription You can change the submit status on each drug individually 12. Managing Prescriptions There is a new Notification icon that displays to indicate pending e-prescribing refill requests, e- prescribing errors, unsubmitted prescriptions, and new medication dispense history. 1. Medications listed in blue are unsubmitted prescriptions 2. Medications listed in red have submission errors 3. The errors that display are specific to the user that is logged in 4. For example, in the screen shot below, the notification icon indicates there are 5 items that the logged in Provider needs to review. There are 3 unsubmitted orders, 1 submission error on levothroid, and 1 error that exists on another patient the logged in provider has cared for. 5. Other providers will see the medications listed in blue or red and can address the errors. 6. To manage the errors, click on the Nofification error icon, then 7. 8. You will then receive a listing of the specific errors. Click on the plus sign to see more details. This is the error on levothroid This is an existing error on a pt cared for by the logged in Provider To address errors: 1. Right click on the medication with the error or in unsubmitted status 2. 4. When the prescription box pops up, make the changes to address the errors or review the medication, then 5. Click review and submit 6. Once all errors have been addressed, the writing of the medication will turn black and the number of errors on the Notification icon will decrease. 7. Click close when finished. 06/2013 Page 9 of 10
Managing Allergies Allergy alerts are active in prescription writer. If the allergy or intolerance has been investigated and the benefits outweigh the risks, the provider may acknowledge the alert to continue with entering the prescription To acknowledge an allergy, do the following: 1. Click acknowledge 2. Select an acknowledgement comment. You may also free text a reason 3. Click proceed 4. You can then proceed with submitting the prescription 06/2013 Page 10 of 10
