ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO AUGUST 14, 2016 READINGS FOR AUGUST 21 Isaiah 66:18-21 Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 Luke 13:22-30 With heartfelt thanks for your STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE August 6 & 7 Adults $31,145.29 Children $3.00 IN THE MILITARY Please pray for those serving in the military. Lord, protect our military as they sacrifice for us; bless them and their families for their continuing selflessness. SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY This week there was the most beautiful video on Facebook. An African immgrant living in the U.S. has a surprise visit from his brother and mother, whom he has not seen in ten years. The man falls to the floor and cries, over and over, Mama, Mama! and holds on to his mother as he weeps for joy. Imagine the reunion of Jesus and his mother! This year, the Solemnity of the Assumption is NOT a holy day of obligation, so Mass for the Assumption will be at the regular time on Monday morning, August 15, at 8:15 a.m. WE REMEMBER OUR DECEASED In your prayers please remember Mary Mullins, whose funeral was held last Saturday. Please also remember her family and all who mourn her death. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. MERCY MATTERS Join us August 15 for our next Mercy Matters dinner. Chris Kreger will join us to share from both a personal and professional standpoint her experiences of talking to people who no longer practice the faith, especially her own family members. Dinner is included and the event is free. Sign up via the website or by calling the parish office. Many local law enforcement agencies also offer collection receptacles, sometimes called drop-boxes, to assist consumers in safely disposing of their unused medicines. For a complete listing of medication and prescription take-back programs near you, please visit www.rxdrugdropbox.org and enter your address or zip code. For more information, please contact us at (937) 225-4999. DO NOT flush medications. Recent studies have found that medicines flushed down the drain can contaminate our lakes and streams, which can hurt fish and other aquatic wildlife, and end up in our drinking water. VIRTUS TRAINING AT ST. HELEN The next VIRTUS Session at St. Helen will be held on Wednesday, August 24th at 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Smith Building. The VIRTUS Protecting God s Children awareness session is a 3-hour session, and is mandatory for all volunteers, employees, and clerics. All participants must pre-register for the session at www.virtus.org. Walk-in s CAN NOT be accommodated. If you have questions or need information, please contact the parish safe-environment coordinator, Mel McWilliams, 254-6233. Keep in mind that space is limited and registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Children are not permitted, and childcare is not provided at this session. We look forward to seeing you there, and becoming partners together in providing a safer environment for children! MERCY CORNER Our featured Corporal Work of Mercy for August is Comfort the sick. Bring a nutritious bedtime snack to Ronald McDonald House to share with families. Our featured Spiritual Work of Mercy for August is Counsel the doubtful. Go on retreat. It s a way to be merciful to yourself and also to the people around you, who know you need to go on retreat. If you cannot do that, at least try to make a day, or evening, of recollection. Our Colossians virtue for August is Kindness Scripture: An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. Proverbs 12:25 Consider Trying: Don t reward your children for every act of kindness, such as washing dishes after dinner. We should expect our children to help around the house, and only reward uncommon acts of kindness. Follow up with talking to your children about kind and unkind acts they see on tv and about acts of justice and injustice they might witness or hear about in the news. SHORT-TERM PARISH VOLUNTEER GARDENING HELP NEEDED! PLEASE CALL ASAP! Gloria Johnson, who does such beautiful job of taking care of the Shrine garden and the rectory garden, will be unable to work her magical beauty for a couple of months. Hence, we are looking for a volunteer or volunteers who can take over in the interim. The Rose Garden is covered. We just need help with the gardens and pots on both sides of the Blessed Mother s Shrine and the rectory office garden. These will need weeding and watering a couple of times a week. If you can give us any amount of time, please contact our Business Manager, Don Reimer, at 254-6233 x 309. Thank you, dear Gloria, and all volunteers for helping us keep our gardens of God s beauty so lovely!

ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO AUGUST 14, 2016 The families whom we have fed With our funeral lunch ministry say Thank you to the parish of St. Helen! Our parishioners host luncheons for those who have a funeral here at St. Helen. By giving families a place to break bread together, we have been a blessing to hundreds of families over the last 20 years, sometimes to help heal old wounds, sometimes bringing people back to the church. The family provides meat trays & bread, and we do the rest! We provide hot & cold side dishes and desserts We serve the lunch. Altar Rosary provides the paper products on coffee. ******************************************************************** THIS IS A VOLUNTEER EFFORT, AND WE ARE IN NEED OF HEARTS AND HANDS TO HELP US! We are in desperate need of servers, food donors, and assistance organizing the luncheons. Servers: about 4 hours, usually from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (depending on time of funeral) Food Donations: Donors make a dish to feed 12 and drop it off in the Smith Building. We call to see what you can bring. Organizers: Contact the family. Line up servers and call for food donations. Ensure Smith Building is set-up. Do not need to stay for luncheon.
