Marine Corps League P.O. Box 10536 Colorado Springs, CO 80932-1536 www.pikespeakmcl.org January 2017 Commandant Paul Hinojosa mclphinojosa@q.com 719-313-1752 Greetings Marines, FMF Corpsmen & Chaplains, and Associates. The year 2017 is upon us, we have many events already lined up for the year and our Junior Vice Commandant will be very busy. As many of you know, we are faced with the challenge of finding a new place to meet for 2017. Our goal is to have a place by our February meeting. We have several places to go look at, time is short, but they look promising and once we decide what will work best for us, we will send out the information. If all works well, we may have a place picked out and ready for announcement in our January 21 meeting. The potential site is the VFW post 4051, 430 East Pikes Peak. Emphasis on the word Potential. I am excited for this year to be your commandant for this detachment. I am very appreciative and blessed to have the current staff from 2016, plus, on this year s staff. This makes me very optimistic in my new role, knowing that should I need any advice or assistance, this team has had a lot of miles and experience in the positions they have chosen to fulfill. I pray that this year continues to bring us blessings, stay healthy, and let s go get er done! Semper Fi! Paul Senior Vice Commandant Web Sergeant Terry Crum colorado.crum@gmail.com 719-432-7340 Greetings, thank you for electing me as the Detachment Senior Vice Commandant. I want each of you to know that I do not take this duty lightly. It is an honor to be part of an excellent team and Paul Hinojosa will make a terrific Commandant. No unit succeeds on the merits of one person and it may sound as a cliché, but as Harry Truman said: It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. This holds true in the NFL, in corporate America, as well as the Corps. The Pike Peak Det. has outstanding members and together we will make 2017 great. Terry 2016 Det. Marine of the Year Terry Crum Junior Vice Commandant sjschwartz_98@yahoo.com 719-213-1922 Greetings to our Detachment members, and associate members. It's the beginning of a new year and I expect to have many events over the next 12 months. As always, I will be counting on you to support our efforts and join us whenever you can. I hope to have some preliminary information available at our meeting in January and I will be working with our Senior Vice Commandant/Webmaster to keep you up to date on all that is happening. In addition to our usual parades, cash sales events etc. I am also looking ahead to other opportunities that may present themselves in the community. If you are aware of any of these opportunities, please let me know and I'll follow up. Finally, thanks for electing me as the Junior Vice Commandant (my second go around). I think we have an outstanding group of elected and appointed officers and I'm confident that we, along with the members of the Detachment, will continue marching forward. Happy New Year to all! Steve 1

Judge Advocate garyg4812@yahoo.com 719-597-3054 Greetings Marines, FMF corpsman, Associates. Here s hoping for a better year than before. Here s hoping everyone will consider coming out for the events planned and have little fun. Since we are looking for another location for meetings, if you would look into your networks, communities, neighbors and friends to promote this search, it might be fruitful. Gary Sergeants of Marines Patton and Ramirez. Chaplain jpcarty1@comcast.net 719-337-7179 Happy New Year Marines, FMF Corpsmen, Associates and, friends. Thanks to all who stepped forward to help support those within our Detachment and without, in sickness and distress this past year and, to the Bereavement Team for their support of families at the services we attended. Please remember those members and family members in our Detachment who are still in the throes of difficulty with their health and, other issues. While it can be hard to keep a positive attitude during trying times Helen Keller wrote "your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties." Please let me know if you hear of any members or anyone in their family, that I am not aware of, who may need our help. I hope this will be a good or better year for everyone., Chaplain Life Membership Costs: Age 35 & below: $500.00 36 50: $400.00 51 64: $300.00 65 & over: $200.00 Denise Paymaster Denise Wickersheim md1970@q.com 719-590-9109 You can be a Life Member! Sgt.-at-Arms Osa Tuck osa@divide.net 719-332-0557 Next detachment monthly meeting: Saturday 21 Jan. Coffee: 0730 Breakfast: 0800 Meeting: 0900 Please note the new location The Country Buffett Citadel Crossing 801 Academy Blvd N Colorado Springs, CO 80909 Toys for Tots rcmllr@msn.com 719-235-1058 Despite a few flies in the soup, we successfully made it through yet another campaign. I will be compiling the numbers following our inventory on 4-6 January and our toy valuation audit on 12 January for my After-Action-Report in which I will publish the findings of in the February newsletter. I am however quite confident in saying that we served more children in the Pikes Peak and San Luis Valley regions than we ever have in the past. This is due wholly to the efforts of our great 2

detachment members, Active Duty and Reserve Marines, as well as the public volunteers that came in day after day throughout operations to keep things moving forward. I also want to thank our incredible friends at KRDO for publicizing our shortfall in toy donations during the final days of the Family Give-away portion of the campaign. On day three of the give-away, I was fearful that I would have to send an email to the nearly 400 families that we had yet to serve on day four that we had run out of toys and would not be able to help them this Christmas. As parents started to line up in front of the building though, vehicles started arriving at the back door of the warehouse to drop off toys as a result of KRDO s report the previous evening. The charge was led by a couple of our Marines, one in particular that, felt this was the best use of his Christmas bonus, who showed up with just the right toys to start filling the requests of those waiting in front. This continued for the remainder of the day and into the late evening. Toys arrived at the same pace as the families to receive them. At the end of the day, no families had to be turned away and we ended up with a few toys left over to start off with next year. Thanks again to every one of you for your faithful support and dedication of time and resources to this most worthy Marine Corps tradition of putting smiles on the faces of less fortunate children at Christmas. We aren t done quite yet though! We can use help with inventory and the field day of our warehouse location at the Springs Church (far back corner of the building), 1515 Auto Mall Loop on 4-6 Jan and following our audit on the 12th, we will be loading everything into the semi on the 13th. If you can t help with the heavy lifting but would be willing to drop off some goodies to keep the workers from revolting or just to keep the most important piece of equipment (coffee maker) running, we would appreciate that as well. Semper Fi and Job Well Done Everyone!!! Russ Quarter Master rcmllr@msn.com 719-235-1058 Cash sales will be CLOSED at the Jan. monthly meeting. Russ Pedigree Devil Dog (PDD) Pound Keeper sjschwartz_98@yahoo.com 719-213-1922 A reminder that we will have our next Growl immediately following the Detachment meeting in January. Bring your bones (small and large) as well as your passports. I have some ideas and thoughts I'd like to talk about at the Growl and I'm looking forward to your input. WOOF! WOOF!
