Description Advanced Studies Masters Child Life () Degree 2013 Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Degree/Program is an advanced degree program for careers working with infants, children, teens (from birth through adolescence) and their families experiencing traumatic events and situations in their lives including but not limited to acute and chronic illness, hospitalization, accidental and non-accidental trauma and death and bereavement. This program/degree is service oriented and prepares candidates working in four settings: the medical/hospital, school, community and home environments to provide individual and family centered developmental psycho-social and psycho-educational humanistic and diversity center care in all settings locally, nationally and globally. The Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Degree/Program has been in existence since 1984 and follows the mission Statement the University La Verne and the standards Clinical and Practice based Education Programs developed and implemented by the National Organization, Child Life Council. The Child Life Council recommends the Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Program as a high the highest and the highest level certification for our clinical academic program quality clinical education advanced degree program in the field Child Life. The Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Program networks with and provides practicum and internship opportunities for the Advanced Studies Masters Child Life candidates in over 60 Medical and Hospital Institutions nationwide. The Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Degree/ Program has a sense diversity in that the candidates are from local and surrounding communities, the United States and internationally providing the program with a global perspective. 2013 saw growth in the overall growth the program a total 51 students as well as the International Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Program by servicing Masters Candidates from 7 countries: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Canada, Mexico and Germany The Masters Child Life Teaching Team consists Certified Child Life Specialists (who have over 60 years experience in the field), an Educator and a Nurse Practitioner. The last four semesters the Graduates the Masters Child Life Program have a 99 to 100% pass rate for the Child Life National Pressional Certification Exam. Course C Outreach and Technology for the Child Life Educator course focuses on furthering the education the Masters Child Life students both through a hospital based practicum/field work and a community outreach based/civil engagement practicum. The Child Life Specialist is a trained, educated and caring pressional who strives to educate therefore minimizing the stress and anxiety infants, children, teens and family experience while undergoing experiences such as traumatic and psychological experiences, medical treatment, health care issues, emotional and physical pain and grief and loss. In health care environments it is the role the Child Life Specialist to support and educate the infant, child, teen and their families through building trusting communications and relationships, identifying and assessing the coping, educational

and psycho-social needs and help the families develop coping techniques, provide and help the families participate in self- expression through therapeutic and clinical education interventions and along with the interdisciplinary medical health care team create a atmosphere family and team center care. The Foundation the Program The mission the Advanced Studies/ Masters Child Life program/child Life Teaching Team is to create an environment success where everyone is involved in gaining knowledge and appropriate theories and approaches and practical application in the Child Life Skill sets, compassionate learning, collaboration, communication, experience, discovery one s self, reflection and empowerment in a candidate team centered developmental atmosphere. The Vision the Advanced Studies/Masters Child Life program/child Life Teaching Team believes that the commitment to the field Child Life is not always what it is now But What It CAN BE and Lending our Hands to the children, families and our peers during their health care journeys Touch Tomorrows and provides Empathy and Empowerment. Section 3 - Key Program Improvements 2013 The below key program improvements were represented and evident in three areas data 1) course evaluation 2) key assessment 3) end program survey. Key Program Improvement/Highlights 1) A new program classification was established () to distinguish the above Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Core Courses which created a core classes within the Program that now follows the National Child Life Council s clarification requirements. This Improvement to the program was also made due to candidate feedback from course evaluations and child life key assessment data. 2) Due to the changes in the Child Life Internship and Certification Standards through the Child Life National Council requirements there needed to be a total 10 () core courses for the candidates to complete the requirements to be eligible for internships and certification. The elective choice was eliminated and a new core Child Life course was created C Outreach & Technology for the Child Life Educator This improvement was also made due to candidate feedback through the end program survey data. 3) A new course C was created, planned and implemented to further the education and practical application the candidates both through a hospital based practicum/field work and community outreach based/civil engagement practicum. C was established as a preparatory course a minimum 250 practical hours as a hospital based and community outreach based practicum that prepares () Masters candidates for the National 600 hour Child Life Internship. C also established a base knowledge and understanding for the Child Life candidates to further understand the potential Child Life Specialist jobs in community based settings taking the Field Child Life outside the Health Care Environment and further enhancing the opportunities for the candidates based on a local, national, global level.

This improvement ( C course) was made due to candidate feedback through the end program survey data. 4) Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Key Assessment Knowledge Assignment Plan - Significant increase in the data Rationale: A significant amount new theory and practical application was added to the class criteria such as many new components leadership: 1) leadership styles 2) communication theory 3) leadership and conflict resolution 4) Problem solving methods 5) decision making Section 4 Future Change/Review Advanced Studies Masters Child Life Program will continue to review and change end program survey questions to make sure that all the comprehensive questions reflect both theory and practical application and is relevant only to the field Child Life. Candidate feedback continues to show evidence increasing satisfaction program. A Continued improvement to the Advanced Studies Masters Child Life degree/program is that all core courses are taught by a Certified Child Life Specialist and is designed, implemented and evaluated according to the specific clinical and academic standards set forth by the National Child Life Council.
