This Week: Park And RIdes Need To Change, The Weather, Seasonal Outlook, WikiHow Spotlight, Horoscopes, Upcoming Events, Photo Of The Week, Dessert Pizzas, Comics. EDMONTON PARK AND RIDES NEED TO CHANGE Waiting for the LRT, you are almost sure to see a full parking lot nearby. Edmonton is too reliant on the Park 'n Ride lots at Clareview, Belvedere, Stadium and Century Park stations, and they are always full by 7:30 in the morning. Don't get me wrong, this is not a totally bad thing, but it just doesn't make sense why someone will drive just to take the train? The good side: people are actually taking the LRT. It does make a difference, in the amount of traffic, and the pollution levels. Though it would make an even larger difference if people would stop driving to the train, and actually use more eco-friendly modes of transportation, like bicycles, or the bus, or walking, you know what I mean. But, the city is proposing that we start charging for parking at the LRT. I think that is a good idea, but before we start emptying people's wallets, we need to look at the bigger picture. The reason people have to take their cars to the LRT is because we don't have enough LRT. The longest distance between stations is between Belvedere and Clareview, and it takes an average of 6 minutes to travel from one to another, that's a problem. We need to start making our LRT more urban friendly, by reducing the space between stops, and making the stops more accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and buses. Inconveniencing people will just turn people away from the LRT, but if we make it easier to get to the LRT without a car, people will stop taking their cars. It's that simple. Though, it's not simple at the same time. How are we going to make LRT stops appear out of this air, we need funding, space, planning, and most of all, time. This is all going to take time. The most immediate fix will not truly fix anything. We just have to be patient. You're probably wondering why we are such a car-dependent city in the first place. It all started with this one decision, that took place in the 1950's. The city decided to tear out ALL of the streetcar system. The 70 kilometres of track, that could take you anywhere, was gone. Tearing that all up probably cost just as much to put it there. We turned to cars, and that got us nowhere. Because of that one decision, we are having troubles with transit today. The one thing that will fix this is time. -Nathaniel Sorochan The Weather Provided By The Weather Network PAGE 2
