2017 Chicago Thoracic Oncology Nursing Summit Expert Insights and Key Nursing Considerations Treating and Caring for Patients with Lung Cancer Program Summary A full day conference designed to foster the exchange of the most recent advances in the biology and treatment of lung cancer is planned. Recognized experts in thoracic oncology will present in a format promoting discussion and interaction with participants, providing expertise and guidance on recent developments in basic science, translational medicine, and clinical trials. The goal of this conference is to provide practicing nurses with clinical competencies that will help them improve outcomes for their lung cancer patients.
Educational Objectives After completing this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Differentiate among different lung cancer types including symptoms, diagnosis, staging, and prognosis, as well as implement a lung cancer screening program 2. Recognize the importance of genomic testing in guiding treatment decisions, and thereby facilitate patient education and implementation 3. Apply current treatment algorithms for NSCLC and SCL, including assisting patients through their treatment cycles via adherence, side effect management, and advocacy 4. Apply patient selection criteria, and side-effect management of novel targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors 5. Outline considerations and patient benefits for surgical management of lung cancer (thoracic surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery) Target Audience This activity is intended for nurses who treat patients with lung cancer.
