Our Treasurer Ron Hildenbrand is still in hospital after one year. It has been a journey for him and his wife Flona this past year and we hope and pray for a full recovery so he can come home. Our thoughts are with Flona and Ron always. Some of the events we had in 2014-2015 were: AGM Queens Inn, May 15, 2014. We had the pleasure of Michelle Dietrich and Charlie Kelleher speak on their 11 year sailing trip. During the summer months, we had the annual BBQ at Jack and Jan's home in Tavistock, volunteering on the Razzamajazz boat with Robert at the helm working with the Stratford Tourism Alliance which has proved to be an exciting venture for this coming summer as well. We had an evening in the Armouries with the Cadets, and the Optimist Youth Day in St. Pauls, and volunteered for the Dragon boat races in September. And the Fall of 2014 found it very exciting to welcome 10 students for the Boating Essentials course. We had our Xmas party on December 2 nd at the Queens Inn. We had a General Meeting on February 18, 2015 which sees a new Executive Committee coming forward. A donation from the Squadron Finances to the CPS Foundation was made this year to bring us up to date with funding and this feels real good that we did this for the Foundation. Your Bridge Officeers attended Squadron meetings every month and also attending District Meetings. They have been a great team for the up times and the down times and always found time to laugh too! It has been a great experience as Commander during the past 6 years. I am now making way for others with new and fresh ideas to carry our Squadron forward to the seasons ahead. I know you will give Ann Reed Commander and Jack Wittig Treasurer your support for the coming year as well as Robert, Flona, John and Thurman. I am not disappearing, oh no, I love CPS! I am just taking a coffee break with Baileys! Cheers, Mary Montizambert Scuttlebutt March 2015 page 1

TRAINING OFFICER S REPORT We were fortunate to have ten students for our Boating Essentials class this year. Congratulations to all ten students for successfully completing the course. We hope you all enjoyed the class and learned lots of new things to apply to your summer boating experiences. A special thank you to all instructors who helped make this course a success. Your wisdom and expertise make the course interesting and fun for all. Ongoing is our VHF Marine Radio Course for which we have eighteen students. Thank you to Mary Montizambert and Tom Sutherland for all your efforts to make this course possible. By the time this newsletter comes out this class will have completed this course and we hope all pass with flying colours. Next in line is a PCOC Course to be held in April. See the announcement for this course later in this newsletter. Our members are our greatest ambassadors for CPS so please, tell your friends and fellow boaters. Give us a call and take a course. It is a great way to spend your off season of boating as you gain knowledge which can only make your experiences on the water safer and better. On a personal note I would like to say thank you to Mary Montizambert as she steps down as our Commander. Mary came to us at a time when we really needed someone to step up to the plate and help the squadron through a difficult time. We have had many laughs together and attended many CPS functions together. For the first while it was a learning curve for her and for me as Training Officer but, I think we both came away from the experience richer and with a greater understanding for CPS and how to make our squadron stronger and better. We wish you all the best as you take a well deserved break. Know this though we will be calling on you for help from time to time. As Mary would say Cheers! Flona Hildenbrand, Training Officer Stuck for a name for your boat? FUTURE COURSES PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operators Card) MONDAY, APRIL 13, 2015 THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 2015 Location to be announced closer to the date. STRATFORD POWER AND SAIL SQUADRON ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, DINNER & GRADUATION THE VICTORIA ROOM THE QUEENS INN ONTARIO ST., STRATFORD WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2015 Cocktails at 6:00 pm 7:00 p.m. (1800 hrs 1900 hrs) Dinner Buffet 7:00 pm (1900 hrs) $10 per person Cash Bar following the Dinner our A.G.M. and Graduation of ten students Guest Speaker: RCMP Cst. Craig SakKit - 8:30 p.m. We are pleased to have R.C.M.P. Cst. Sakkit attend our A.G.M. presenting interesting information on the RCMP/USA program on Maritime Law Enforcement R.S.V.P to Mary at marymonti@start.ca Integrated Cross-Border Maritime Law Enforcement Operations (Shiprider) Who does this concern? What it means for boaters on the lake? Why we have it? Where is it enforced? When was it instituted. RCMP Const. Craig Sakkit will give you all the information you need to travel on our waters this coming season. Canada-U.S. Shiprider involves vessels jointly crewed by specially trained and designated Canadian and U.S. law enforcement officers who are authorized to enforce the law on both sides of the international boundary line. Working together, armed Canadian and U.S. law enforcement officers are able to transit back and forth across the border to help secure it from threats to national security, as well as prevent cross-border smuggling and trafficking. Specific enforcement activities consist of detecting, monitoring and potentially boarding vessels in either Canadian or American waters. In Canadian waters, Canada-U.S. Shiprider operations are subject to Canadian laws, policies and procedures and all operations are undertaken under the direction and control of the RCMP. RCMP vessels designated as Canada-U.S. Shiprider vessels have a member of the USCG on board and are able to enter U.S. waters to enforce U.S. laws under the supervision of the USCG member. Likewise, USCG vessels designated as Canada-U.S. Shiprider vessels have a member of the RCMP on board and are able to enter Canadian waters to enforce Canadian laws under the supervision of the RCMP officer. By authorizing these officials to operate on either side of the border, the USCG and RCMP have developed a more efficient means of securing both sides of the border without violating the sovereignty of either nation. Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 6.39.28 PM.png North American Safe Boating awareness Week Campaign is ramping up for this year's boating season. Since 1995, this campaign has been the mainstay of boating safety outreach to the over 16 million people who recreate on Canadian waters each season. The 2015 campaign strives to engrain safe and responsible boating practices as second nature on the water. As a member of Stratford Squadron CPS you are already aware of the importance of safe boating through boating education. Encourage fellow boaters in your community to take advantage of courses and education by promoting CPS and Stratford Squadron. For all Boating Safety information and courses contact Stratford Power and Sail Squadron Flona at 519-273-6120 e-mail odyssey.09@sympatico.ca Robert at 519-595-4916 e-mail robertpaton@37gmail.com THE LAST WORD THANKS Scuttlebutt March 2015 page 4
