Hempstead Public Library Summer Newsletter 2018 Adult Programs Hempstead 43: The Tercentenary Revisted Meeting # 3 - May 2, 2018 The third meeting of the rebooted Hempstead Historical Society was a resounding success. The topic was Hempstead 43: The Tercentenary Revisited. Twenty-four archival items pertaining to the Tercentenary and 1940 s Hempstead in general were on display. Six historic photos of the event were also displayed. Upon entering the Community Room, attendees were greeted by a sign welcoming them to Hempstead in 1943. Before the presentation, they enjoyed Big Band swing music while reviewing the archival items. In order to present a visual to complement the music, the movie The Gang s All Here (20th Century-Fox, 1943) was played silently in the background. Attendees were given photocopies of the Tercentenary souvenir booklet. The first group of archival items on display pertained to the United Services Organization (USO) Federal Recreation Building located at 99 Nichols Court. The next group included items reflecting life in 1943, including ration books and photospreads in national magazines.

The third group of items represented the Tercentenary planning process undertaken by the Village of Hempstead from March through October 1943. Finally, items were displayed honoring other special anniversary celebrations the following year as well as a photospread on the Hempstead wives keeping the home fires burning while their husbands served overseas. After the presentation, the Society watched color film of the 1943 Tercentenary parade, which was approximately 18 minutes long. After a conversation about the film and a final viewing of the archival materials, attendees departed at approximately 8:15pm.

Job Information Center HAVING TROUBLE GETTING A JOB INTERVIEW? A job search can be a complicated sequence of events. At any point in the process something can go wrong which might stop your progress. If you have done your homework and located a job opening and you are qualified for the job and you applied for that job the next step should be an interview. If you are not getting in the door for an interview there could be some problems with your resume. It s possible you are not customizing your cover letter and resume to each job. It s important to show a prospective employer why you re the perfect person for their specific job. Have you proofread your cover letter and resume? Are they poorly written or have typos? Consider having a friend look over your documents. Do you have gaps in your employment history? You might want to consider using a functional resume format instead of a chronological one to highlight skills and accomplishments rather than job history. Be prepared to explain those gaps when you get an interview. Maybe you aren t selling yourself as well as you could. Listing the special and unique skills and experiences you have to offer will help significantly. This is not the time to be modest. Finally, it s possible you are not using the right keywords. Many job banks now use keyword matching computer scanning systems to match resumes to job openings. Read the job description carefully and pick up on specifics of the job opening. Once you get to talk to the company representative you will be able to explain in greater detail how you can be a good fit with their company. Job Information Center Programs How to Conduct a Successful Job Search Wednesday, September 12th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is a positive interactive workshop, focusing on a set of specific actions job seekers can take to significantly improve the effectiveness of their job search strategy. A variety of valuable resources will be shared and discussed throughout the workshop. Participants can evaluate and implement strategies that will work best for them. This is an informative PowerPoint presentation and handouts will be made available to all who attend. This free program will be held in the Community Room of the library. Registration is required.
