CHARGERS Patricia Kishel and her husband Gregory, have recently published a new book, Kona Heat. It is an adventure/thriller set on Hawaii s Big Island. In the novel volcanic eruptions and ancient rituals threaten geologists building an energy plant. Kishel is a faculty member in the Business/CIS Division. Some Cypress College students hadn t yet been born the last time the men s soccer team defeated a squad from Santa Ana College. The Chargers last won a game against then-named Rancho Santiago via forfeit in 1990. The losing streak was broken last Friday (September 28) when the Chargers upset the perennial powerhouses and defending conference champs Santa Ana with a tie at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Andres Valencia scored the game-tying goal for Cypress. Freshman Megan Mulroney scored five goals in the Chargers 10-4 waterpolo victory last weekend against Santa Monica City. The win came last weekend with the team participating in the San Diego Mesa Tournament. The win was the Chargers first of the season. It came on Friday, September 28, the opening day of the tournament. Campus Employee Award Recipients Honored by NOCCCD Board Certificates of Commendation were presented by the North Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees to the four Cypress College employees in honor of awards recently presented to them. Kathy Godshalk, Mathematics Instructor, Outstanding Faculty Member; Meg Wilson, Retired Nursing Instructor, Charger Award (formerly the Faculty Development Award); Bryan Seiling, History Instructor, Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Member; and Kelly Grimes, Program Coordinator for Equal Opportunity Programs and Services, Outstanding Classified Employee. The presentations took place at the September 25, 2007 Board meeting. At the meeting, Donna Friess, a member of the Cypress College speech faculty, reported on First Generation Cypress College Students and Their Awareness of the Range of Support Services Available to Them for Academic Success and The Communication Text Circle of Love: A Guide to Successful Relationships. HRC Students and Faculty Host Hotel and Lodging Association Event Cypress College Hotel Restaurant, Culinary Arts students and faculty hosted and catered the Orange County Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Partners Luncheon on September 26. Cypress College students Cathryn Ulshafer, Regina Vieira, Elizabeth Arroyo and Alison Zasadil each received $500 scholarship awards and were honored by the association along with students from the Cal Poly Pomona Collins School of Hospitality Management and Orange Coast College. Ryan Giffen, HRC adjunct faculty member, gave a keynote address on Managing the Millennials. Department Chair Lisa Clark and member of the A/OCHLA association has organized and chaired this educational luncheon for the past seven years. The menu was designed by Chef Michael Bird and Chef Jeremy Peters. The event was executed beautifully by Basic Cooking students and HRC student volunteers. The hotel executives enjoyed seeing the facility and especially the students and staff in action. Congratulations are in order for our HRC students, the faculty, and Lab Tech Tracey Heine. NOCCCD Trustees Approve District Budget for 2007-2008 Fiscal Year The North Orange County Community College District 2007-08 budget was adopted by the Board of Trustees following a September 25 public hearing. The new budget includes $165,757,809 in revenues and $161,417,060 in expenses, leaving $4,340,749 in funds that are not yet allocated for 2007-08. Outstanding issues to which these unallocated funds may be applied during the year include: salary increases, retiree benefits, Maintenance and Operations staffing analysis for new facilities, and other construction project expenses. The new District budget compares to $155,245,523 in revenues, $146,098,659 in expenses, and $9,146,864 in unallocated funds at the beginning of 2006-07. Unallocated funds were much larger last year because more one-time funds were provided to the state s community college districts in 2006-07; the NOCCCD received approximately $8.5 million in total one-time funds last year, compared to about $1 million this year. Claudette Dain, District Director, Fiscal Affairs, and Rodrigo L. Garcia, District Manager, Fiscal Affairs reported during the public hearing that, while state allocations for 2007-08 are not as favorable as in the past few years, the NOCCCD budget is still good overall. They also reported that student enrollment continues to be a dominant factor in determining state allocations to the community college districts. For the NOCCCD, the 2007-08 budget is based on a fulltime equivalent students (FTES) target of 35,259.45. This represents District-wide growth of 1.25% over the past year when the District moved from a stabilization mode into a growth mode by increasing enrollment at each campus again. BRIEFLY A Study Habits & Skills Workshop will be held on Thursday, October 11, from 11 a.m.-noon, in CCC-414. No appointment or reservation is necessary. Sixteen creative and resourceful Cypress College instructors and administrators attended the recent Basic Skills Initiative Workshop. Cheri Dickey, Cypress College Academic Senate President, is helping to lead faculty efforts in this initiative in which individuals are generating a plan and working across disciplines to help students succeed Thirty dental hygiene students from Nagano, Japan, visited the campus earlier in the month to learn about the Cypress College program. The Theatre Department, under the direction of Jim Hormel is presenting The Wizard of Oz, with opening night on October 12 The college has sent letters to about 650 new students, to share information about student support services and help them manage the challenges of the first semester of their college studies. For nearly a half-million students, Cypress College has been a springboard to their dreams. Cypress College: Motivating Minds.
