INFORMATION AND OVERVIEW Plano Youth Leadership (PYL) is designed for 10 th grade students (who will be in 10 th grade in the Fall of 2018) who want to learn to be effective leaders. If you think you have leadership potential, or you have a desire to learn more about leadership and opportunities in your community, then Plano Youth Leadership is for you. You don t have to be the president of your class or a team captain or ranked high in your class to participate. You do need to be passionate about learning about leadership and be willing to give the time required. The purpose of Plano Youth Leadership is to train students in leadership techniques and community awareness so that they may become familiar with current issues, community resources, opportunities, and other factors influencing the direction of Plano s future. Participation in the program will require your time and energy. You will be expected to attend all the monthly sessions. We appreciate your interest in PYL. Before completing the attached application form, you are strongly encouraged to review all the information carefully, including all attendance requirements. If you are selected to participate, you will be required to attend the mandatory Teamwork Challenge session in early September and the Orientation & Role of Personality in Leadership session in mid October. Exceptions will not be made for these two mandatory sessions! ELIGIBILITY/CRITERIA Students who are currently enrolled in the 9 th grade (will be in 10 th grade in 2018-19) and who reside in the area served by the Plano Independent School District or within the City of Plano are eligible to apply. Participants will be selected by the Plano Youth Leadership Selection Committee based upon the information provided in their application. All applicants must: Be in good academic standing. Be enrolled in the 10 th grade for the 2018-19 school year. Be responsible for the $175 tuition payment if selected. Need-based scholarships are available. Receive permission to participate from parent/guardian and principal, headmaster or counselor. Please know that multiple students from the same family who are applying for the same class year will be considered independently. SELECTION PROCESS In order to be considered for selection, students must fulfill these application requirements: Complete the entire application form Get all necessary signatures on the application (see Section 2 of the application) Obtain two references (see Section 3 of the application) Provide a resume including the specific impacts you made through your participation Ensure that the completed application and completed references are emailed to support@planoyouthleadership.org no later than the Friday, April 30, 2018 deadline. NOTE: Only complete applications received by the deadline will be considered. SCHOLARSHIPS Financial assistance is available in the form of a grant for tuition for those students who have a genuine need. To be considered for a scholarship, a letter should be included with the application stating why the scholarship is needed. Awards are based on need and will be granted in the order of request. Students will be notified of acceptance in the program by mid-to-late June 2018. 1

Plano Youth Leadership Attendance Policy Students in the Plano Youth Leadership program must attend all sessions; however, excused absences for illness, schoolrelated activities, or other circumstances beyond the student s control, will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The first two sessions (Teamwork Challenge and Orientation & Identifying Leadership Styles) are mandatory. Any class member who fails to attend two class sessions or the equivalent (six hours) or misses one of the mandatory sessions shall forfeit his/her place in the class and the tuition. 7
