PEP BAND SYLLABUS 2010-2011 University Pep Band MUN1100.901 1-3 credit hours DIRECTOR Jim Lindroth Director of Pep Band jlindrot@usf.edu 813-967-7240 ASSISTANT DIRECTORS Bryan Braue HOT Graduate Assistant bryan11@mail.usf.edu Roy Mitchell HOT Graduate Assistant rmitchell9111942@yahoo.com Office Hours: By appointment in 311. GRADE You will be awarded points per game you attend which you were assigned and games you attend without being assigned. Most games are worth two points, some are worth up to 5 points (see schedule). You will lose the total point value of the game you did not attend and were assigned and did not have a sub. It is your responsibility to find a sub to fill in for you and both you and the sub must notify Mr. Lindroth at least 24 hours before report time. Arriving after the first downbeat, or leaving before the end of the game will result in a deduction of ½ the point value of that game. Arriving after call time, but before the first downbeat will result in a Tardy. Every third tardy results in a 1 point deduction. A = No missed assigned games B = 1 2 missed assigned games C = 3 4 missed assigned games (NO possibility of travel) F = 5 or more missed assigned games (NO possibility of travel) CVPA Conflicts: If you are in a CVPA ensemble (not a CVPA academic class), you will receive half the available points for games you miss for rehearsals, and full points for games you miss for performances. You must be in attendance at your ensemble to receive the points! REGISTRATION You are expected to register for MUN1100.901 (Ref# 11833) for 1, 2, or 3 credit hours. If you are not registered by Friday, January 6 th you will no longer be allowed to play in the Pep Band, and you will owe the Athletic Bands half of the cost for your uniform. NDS students will register the same way they did for Marching Band. Contact Jason in the HOT office with questions about NDS registration.

BLACKBOARD All students are expected to be on the Blackboard system and receiving communication from the Director via the USF Marching Band (Fall 2012) Blackboard site. In the Spring, communication will switch over to the Pep Band Blackboard site. Students must check the Marching Band Blackboard and their USF email account frequently, as it is our ONLY means of communication. Email may include such information as: Cancelled games, changed call times, and Trip information. TRAVEL Post-season travel is very likely. Please see the schedule for dates, you are expected to be available. If you are selected for travel, all expenses (airfare, hotel, per diem) will be paid for by Athletics. All trips are open-ended, the date we leave is set but the date we return is based on the success of the team. ALL CONDUCT RULES ALSO APPLY TO PEP BAND TRIPS. ALCOHOL CONSUMTION IS NOT ALLOWED AT ANY TIME. Travel selection will be based on the following: TRIP INSTRUMENTATION The band size for the trip is determined by Athletics shortly before the trip. FULL BAND (28) 2 Piccolos 2 Clarinets 2 Alto Sax 2 Tenor Sax 0 Bari Sax 6 Trumpets 4 Mellophones 4 Trombones 2 Baritones 3 Tubas 1 Drum Set SMALL BAND (23) 2 Piccolos 2 Clarinets 1 Alto Sax 1 Tenor 5 Trumpets 3 Mellophones 3 Trombones 2 Baritones 2 Tubas 1 Drum Set TINY BAND (18) 1 Piccolo 1 Clarinet 1 Alto Sax 1 Tenor 4 Trumpets 2 Mellophones 3 Trombones 1 Baritone 2 Tubas 1 Drum Set TRIPS & BONUS POINTS Members for trips will be selected using the instrumentation chart above. Members will be selected by adding attendance points and seniority points. 1 st year Pep Band = 0 bonus points 2 nd year Pep Band = 5 bonus points 3 rd year Pep Band = 10 bonus points 4 th year or more = 15 bonus points 5 th year or more = 20 bonus points GRADE NOTE: Bonus points are not applicable towards the Class Grade, only trip selection.

In case of ties, the tiebreakers are: #1: Seniority in Pep Band #2: Actual number of games attended #3: Seniority in HOT Band #4: Coin toss TRIP BAND SELECTION Near the end of the season, when we have more specific information about the travel arrangements, we will hold a MANDATORY trip meeting. At this meeting, spots will be assigned for the two trips. If you do not attend the trip meeting you CANNOT GO ON THE TRIP. You CAN attend via phone if someone has you live on the line during the meeting. You may only choose ONE trip to go on. After you have made your choice, you CAN go on the other trip, but you will be at the bottom of the list of eligible members. FOR EXAMPLE KAZOO SECTION SCENARIO (2 spots per trip): KAZOO SECTION POINTS FINAL GRADES Joe 87 +10 = 97 Trip points Sally 77 +0 = 77 Trip points Ralph 89 +0 = 89 Trip points Eric 55 +10 = 0 trip points (not eligible for travel) Cindy 65 +20 = 85 Trip points The order of selection of trip spots goes: Joe, Ralph, Cindy, Sally. Joe chooses the NYC Trip Ralph chooses the NYC Trip Cindy chooses the Hartford trip Sally cannot attend any trips due to a Biology exam This means Joe (who was the top point winner), would have first rights for the remaining Hartford spot, then Ralph, etc. Eric would not be eligible for ANY trip since he failed the class.

UNIFORM Members who attend games out of uniform are subject to a warning, 1 point deduction, or not allowed to play. This decision will be made by the Director or Assistant Director based on the infraction. -Pep band shirt (provided to you) & black pants (you must purchase on your own) -Pep band jacket (optional) -NO HATS or SUNGLASSES -Black shoes Shirts must be tucked in and you must wear a black belt. TARDY -You will be tardy if you arrive after the call time, but before the 1 st downbeat. -1 point deduction from the final grade on the 3 rd, 6 th, and 9 th tardy. -If you arrive after the 1 st downbeat, or leave before the end of the game, you will be charged half of the value of the game. CONDUCT -Members in uniform will refrain from ANY negative comments. -No offensive language. -No comments to the officials EVER. -Smoking is not allowed during Pep Band events. -Also read Alcohol Policy at the end of the syllabus. -Texting and cell phone use is to be kept to an absolute minimum and not in use when performing. *Directors and USF Athletics reserve the right to warn you, remove you from the game, or remove you from the Pep Band for violations of any of the Procedures and Conduct. STIPENDS Members who attend 10 or more entire games (assigned or non-assigned games) will receive a $250 stipend. Members who attend 5 9 entire games will receive a stipend of $125. Members who attend 0 4 games will not receive a stipend. USF Athletic Bands reserves the right to reduce the amount of the stipend due to the number of students registered for the course. Stipends will be distributed after the last regular season game (early March). Remember, any outstanding balance with the University will absorb your stipend. Stipends are NOT guaranteed. USF SCHOOL OF MUSIC ALCOHOL POLICY Musicians found to have consumed alcoholic beverages or illegal substances before or during rehearsals or performances may immediately lose ensemble membership, forfeit any scholarship or talent grant award given by the School of Music for the duration of their time at USF with a payback for semester of infraction, and receive an F for the course.
