THE 100 YEAR LIFE 28-30 April 2017 2017 Program Overview

INTRODUCTION One of Canberra s most popular innovation events Start-Up Camp Canberra is run by Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre (Lighthouse) to support and encourage Canberra s innovative and aspiring individual and enterprise based entrepreneurs. Since 2008, Lighthouse has run Start-Up Camp Canberra; one of the key attractions of many Lighthouse events is their immersive nature whereby participants engage with emerging and established entrepreneurs, corporate innovators, industry experts, mentors and facilitators as well as with innovative products and hands-on interactive experiences. This allows participants to hone in on areas of interest, find others who share these interests, and create relevant and important networks. THEME: THE 100 YEAR LIFE This Start-Up Camp will tackle the challenges and innovation opportunities faced by society as we live increasingly longer. Previous generations have followed the traditional path of getting an education, going to work and then retiring, but this will not be the case for the current or generations to come. This path is already being challenged by rising life expectancy, pensions being eroded by economic changes, the rapidly disappearing job for life and the changing definition of fully employed. Start-Up Camp Canberra The 100 Year Life is one of several activities based on this important topic that will be delivered by Lighthouse in 2017. The theme is about understanding how some of the forces that will shape the future such as technology and globalisation can be harnessed to create the changes we will need to survive and prosper in the Age of Longevity. 2

THE FORMAT Ever thought of launching a business idea in a weekend? At Start-Up Camp Canberra, smart, passionate people with diverse interests and experience come together to launch a business idea in a single weekend. Start-Up Camp is first and foremost an ideas competition and is open to problem-solvers, creative thinkers and ideas people from all over Canberra. The campers, most of whom have never met before, get together on the Friday night, teams are formed as they try to come up with an innovative online solution such as a website or an app around the event theme - 'The 100-Year Life'. Inspired by the 'Start-up Weekend' events organised around the world, Start-Up Camp Canberra takes participants from idea generation, business concept formation to pitching to a panel of judges. On the Sunday, teams present their business concept to the world at a special launch event and are critiqued by a high-profile panel of judges consisting of web technology investors, experts in commercialisation, successful entrepreneurs, and industry specialists. The weekend is aided by workshops covering topics such as problem identification, idea generation, understanding business models, as well as a crash course in how to do the perfect pitch. While there is plenty of technology involved in the event, the focus is on idea identification, development and validation. THE PARTICIPANTS Start-Up Camp Canberra is open to anyone interested in the entrepreneurial process students, creatives, designers, web developers, marketers, business thinkers. High school students accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend. The Lighthouse approach of combining engaging themes, immersive experiences and inspiring guest presenters ensures that we have engagement from both young and mature participants and have successfully increased female participation to over 40 percent. Participants typically include students, academic staff, corporate teams, researchers, educators, inventors and entrepreneurs from the local and surrounding regions. 3

ABOUT LIGHTHOUSE A lean and agile innovation consultancy founded in 2008 At Lighthouse we work with people who have ideas. These people come from all walks of life - entrepreneurs, inventors, researchers and scientists and leaders steering their organisations through periods of major change. But they all have the same vision: to turn their ideas into reality, build capability and expertise and grow sustainable businesses. EVENT SPONSORS: Since 2010, Lighthouse has hosted the annual, innovation event, Start- Up Camp Canberra. The objective of Start-Up Camp Canberra is to encourage entrepreneurial thinking through the development of business concept over the course of a single weekend.
