All-Americans Christian Dallwitz 1988 A four-year starter for Wake Forest from 1984-88, Christian Dallwitz gained All- America honors his senior season in doubles with partner Mark Greenan. The duo became the first All-Americans in the history of Wake Forest tennis, and did so by reaching the semi-finals of the NCAA Doubles Championships. What made the achievement even more impressive is that Dallwitz and Greenan were originally listed as first alternates, but made it into the field and then proceeded to upset the tournament s No. 2 seed. In addition to being part of Wake Forest s top doubles team, Dallwitz also excelled in singles. He had a career singles record of 77-42 and was named All-ACC in 1986 after posting a 20-11 singles record and winning the No. 4 flight championship with a 7-3 mark against conference opposition. Christian Dallwitz was one of three family members to play for the Deacons. His brother, Stefan, gained All-ACC honors in 1988 while younger sister Karin starred for the women s team for four years. A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Dallwitz arrived at Wake Forest after an outstanding junior career. When he and his brother joined the Demon Deacons in the fall of 1984, Dallwitz was ranked second in the Mexican junior rankings. Dallwitz graduated from Wake Forest University in 1988 with a degree in business. Mark Greenan 1988 Mark Greenan, the left-hander from Cambridge, Ontario, is recognized as one of the top players in Wake Forest history and is the only one to compete in both the singles and doubles draw of the NCAA Championships. Along with partner Christian Dallwitz, Greenan became the first Demon Deacon All-American after reaching the semifinals of the 1988 Doubles Championships. After compiling an 18-3 record during the regular season, Greenan and Dallwitz won their first three matches in the NCAAs before falling to Brian Garrow and Patrick Galbriath of UCLA, the eventual national champions. They finished the year ranked eighth nationally in the ITA poll. In addition to making the NCAA Championships in doubles, Greenan also qualified in singles and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Georgia s Al Parker. Greenan appeared 48th in the finals singles rankings after an outstanding season in 1988. He went 21-6 during the dualmatch season, including a 6-1 mark in ACC play. He had an impressive 41-15 career record in dual matches, which included an 11-3 mark against ACC foes. Greenan became the first Wake Forest tennis player to garner All-ACC recognition twice, something that only Gilles Ameline and Myles Clouston have duplicated since. Gilles Ameline 1990 A native of Saint-Lo, France, Gilles Ameline became the first player in Wake Forest men s tennis history to gain All-America honors in singles competition when he achieved that status in 1990. After putting together an impressive singles record of 30-10 during his senior season, Ameline ended the year ranked 16th in the ITA rankings. He was the first player in the program s history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships and one of only three Deacons to make the All-ACC Team two times. Ameline transferred to Wake Forest prior to the 1989 season after winning the junior college national championship at Midland, TX, Junior College. He made an immediate impact for the Deacons, playing the No. 1 singles position and finishing with a 15-7 record in dual match competition. He had an outstanding senior year in which he finished in the Top Five of the Volvo All-American Championships and the Rolex National Indoor Championships, two of the four legs in collegiate s grand slam. As a result, his individual singles ranking peaked to fifth in the country, which is the highest ever for a Deacon men s tennis player. Overall, Ameline closed out his Wake Forest career with a singles record of 58-24 and was named Wake Forest s most valuable player each of his two seasons. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in Economics. Ameline was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Men s Tennis Team in 2002, honoring the top 50 men s tennis players in the first 50 years of the ACC, as voted on by the 2002 ACC men s tennis coaches. wakeforestsports.com 21
