NAME DATE SIGNATURE BALDWIN WALLACE UNIVERSITY WOMEN S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Baldwin Wallace University Women s Club Scholarship will be granted to qualified Baldwin Wallace women who will be chosen by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of academic record, future plans, goals and needs. CRITERIA AND INSTRUCTIONS 1. Must be planning to be enrolled at Baldwin Wallace University during the entire 2017-2018 academic year. 2. Must have completed two consecutive semesters at Baldwin Wallace University as a full time student (minimum of 12 credit hours per semester), or three consecutive semesters as a part-time Adult/Continuing Education student. 3. Must have at least a 3.00 accumulative grade point average. 4. Must submit three recommendations. 5. Application and recommendations must be sent together to the Alumni House and received by November 21, 2016. Scholarships in amounts ranging from $500 to $2,500 were presented for the 2016-2017 year. On the next page are descriptions of the possible scholarship funds that have been established through the BW Women s Club. Note: It is at the ultimate discretion of the selection committee to determine the number and amounts of the scholarships each year. 1
a. Louise Kiefer Scholarship Louise Weishaar Kiefer graduated from BW in 1942. She started her career at BW in 1942 and retired in 1991 a Professor Emeritus of German. She is the past recipient of many BW honors and awards. Louise served as BW Women s Club treasurer, historian and scholarship liaison for many years. She was the College Historian from 1993 until 2010 and is honored on BW s Memorial Wall on North Campus for her positive impact on the BW community. b. Zoe Clark Loomis Scholarship Zoe Clark Loomis was the founder of the BW Women s Club and served as its first president in 1921. In addition, she was a charter member of the Clionian Society, now the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. c. Dorothy Marks McKelvey Scholarship Dorothy Marks McKelvey was a devoted member of the BW Women s Club and served as President from 1961-1963. She graduated from BW in 1924 and was the Historian for many years at BW until her retirement in 1993. She has been honored many times throughout her career. In addition, she was a lecturer and was actively involved in civic activities and organizations. d. Eloise Schaefer Tressel Scholarship Eloise Schaefer Tressel was a devoted member of the BW Women s Club. She graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in 1972 and served as president of BW Women s Club from 1974-1976, as well as serving on many committees. Eloise stayed active with BW Women s Club for many years. e. Mary E. Culp Mary George Culp graduated from BW in 1956. She was an extraordinary teacher in secondary education. f. Carol Dancik/President s Scholarship Carol Dancik graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in 1992. She earned her degree by attending evening and weekend classes while maintaining a full-time career and raising her family. She served as president of BW Women s Club from 2002-2003 and in many other capacities on the board for BW Women s Club. Carol was an extremely dedicated member and gave her heart and soul to the mission of the organization. She also served on BW s Alumni Association as a Council-at-Large member, was an accomplished artist and graced the community with her other volunteer activities. g. Viola Pearl Moore Zackman Scholarship Viola Pearl Moore Zackman is the grandmother of Susan Clark (BW Class of 1985). Born in 1893, Viola Pearl, known as Betty, grew up in a time and a place in which, as her father told her, decent women did not work outside the home. As a young woman, she refused to let his disapproval prevent her from attending Western Reserve Library School. In later years, when she was widowed during the height of the Great Depression, her education enabled her to obtain a job as a librarian and support her two teenage daughters. She also became Director of 2
Volunteers at Lakewood Hospital and, later, a tour guide for Greyhound Bus Company. In the end, her father would surely have approved. h. Arline E. Kadel Scholarship Arline Kadel graduated from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in 1936 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. After graduation she was a music teacher in several suburban school districts and the Cleveland Public Schools, where she retired from South High in 1976. As a student in 1933, Arline sang in the choir for the first Bach Festival. Arline continued to participate and attend 80 annual festivals in what has become the nation s oldest collegiate Bach Festival. A bequest from her estate made possible the first purchases of Steinway grand pianos toward BW s goal of becoming an All-Steinway School. i. Presidents Scholarship These scholarships honor the past and current presidents of the Baldwin Wallace University Women s Club. 8. After review of applications, selected finalists will be asked to complete a video interview at the Alumni Office. The videos will be used solely for the purpose of the selection process and viewed only for the purpose of deliberation by a limited number of scholarship committee volunteers.
