What is the Marine Corps League s Purpose & Who Are The Members? The Marine Corps League was created by Congressional Charter in 1937 to support both active duty and retired Marines and their families, and to perpetuate the spirit and traditions of the Corps. Nationally, the Marine Corps League has over 76,000 members in 1,100 detachments with representation in all 50 states. The League Charter has expanded over the years to embrace all honorably discharged members of the U.S. Armed Services and their families.
Grass Roots Community Involvement The League plays an active role in our community promoting patriotism, supporting our veterans and their families, and protecting the vulnerable. Our members are role models for our youth, better preparing them for the responsibilities of citizenship by promoting our Corps traditions and values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.
Community Involvement & Impact Honor Honoring America. Honoring the sacrifices of the armed forces. The Matt Dillon Scholarship Fund In 2008 the Detachment Awarded $4,000 in scholarships to outstanding JROTC students in Aiken County from the Marine Cpl. Matt Dillon Fund. Matthew Dillon was an Aiken native, KIA December 2006. Color Guards and Honor Guards Perform at civic functions and patriotic events. Provide honor guards for military ceremonies. Memorial Day Parade in Aiken A record 234 entrees in 2007. Veterans Day Honoring our military at Veteran s Memorial Park

The League stands strong in support of our past and present armed service personnel and their families. Where there is a need, we step up to meet it.
Community Involvement & Impact Commitment Serving the community day in and day out. Toys for Tots An annual campaign to raise funds and collect and distribute toys to needy children in the area. Special Trikes for Special Tykes We provide tricycles specially designed for disabled children, enabling them to be more active and participate with other children. Veterans Hospital Our detachment members volunteer their services with the Veterans Hospital and provide comraderie to our nation s brave defenders of the past. Young Marine Program A youth program that emphasizes honor, courage and commitment as well as respect for others, loyalty, dependability, devotion to God, country, community and family.

Box 3431, Aiken, SC, 29802-3431 ***Detachment Programs and Activities*** MEMORIAL DAY PARADE Annually the Detachment sponsors & organizes the Aiken, South Carolina parade on the Saturday preceding Memorial Day. VETERANS DAY CEREMONIES Each November the Detachment presents and presides over a ceremony honoring Veterans, who gave the ultimate sacrifice; at the Aiken Memorial Gardens/Park, conceptualized by the unit with funds donated from the community. TOYS FOR TOTS CAMPAIGN The Detachment takes part annually in the Toys for Tots campaign to raise funds and to collect and distribute toys to needy children of Aiken County. YOUNG MARINES OF THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE A youth program emphasizing Courage, Honor and Commitment in an environment of respect for others; with traits of loyalty, honesty, dependability, and devotion to God, Country, Community and Family. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS The Detachment is heavily involved in awarding annual scholarships of $1,000 to a member of each of Aiken County s High School JROTC programs. The program is known as the Matt Dillon Scholarship Program; in honor of a local Marine. HONOR GUARDS AND SECURITY SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY Honor Guards (with & with out Colors/Arms) whenever called upon by the City, County, Companies or private citizens. Members of the Unit may be found performing security services at Polo, Special Olympics, County Fair, Triple Crown and even commercial events. SPECIAL TRIKES FOR SPECIAL TYKES PROGRAM Tricycles specially designed and built for disabled children are provided by the Detachment with support from the community. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Special recognition is given to all Eagle Scouts in Aiken County along with supporting this organizations promotion of traditional family values. JROTC AWARDS PROGRAM The Detachment works with local high school JROTC Commanders/Instructors in sponsoring programs for Orienteering, Marksmanship, Physical Fitness, Drill and Leadership. MARINE 4 LIFE PROGRAM Marines leaving active duty are provided a point of contact in the Unit for assistance in their transition back to civilian life. VETERAN AFFAIRS VOLUNTARY SERVICE PROGRAM Individuals in the Unit contribute hundreds of man-hours every year supplementing staffs at VA Hospitals in providing morale, comfort and assistance to institutionalized veterans and participates in the Aiken County Veterans Council. UNITED STATES FLAGS AT CITY INTERSECTIONS Supports installation and display of the American Flag above many traffic intersections in Aiken. WOUNDED WARIOR PROGRAM The scope of the Detachments support encompasses financial (i.e., Fund drives for Fisher House) visits from unit members and support of other opportunities that are presented to the Unit.
