Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI) 2015: Mayor Lee launches the Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI) to help San Francisco nonprofits secure new, nonprofit-owned space and create solutions for organizations seeking longterm leases. $5.7 million will be available over 2 years for grants and technical assistance. NCCLF NPD and NSSP client Institute on Aging has received technical assistance services
Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI) NSI is funded by the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, implemented as a partnership with the Mayor s Office of Housing and Community Development, the San Francisco Arts Commission and other key partners, and administered by NCCLF.
Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI) Impact to date: $2.2M awarded for the acquisition of new nonprofit owned space $500,000 to support one time costs arising from a new lease of 3 or more years TA awards to 27 organizations San Francisco Supervisor Fewer speaking at the NSI Awards press conference on May 26.
Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative Nonprofit Space Stabilization Fund Financial Assistance For nonprofits facing permanent displacement or barriers to growth. Must have a fully executed Letter of Intent or Lease commencing on or after September 1, 2016. $500k available in FY18 Technical Assistance Technical Assistance available to organizations facing permanent displacement in the next 18 months, or barriers to growth due to real estate constraints
NSI Eligibility Requirements 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or a fiscally sponsored project. Located in San Francisco. Record of serving lowincome and historically underserved community(ies) for at least the past 3 years. Demonstrate financial stability except for the impact of real estate market forces. NCCLF NPD and NSSP client Mission Kids has received technical assistance services
NSSP Overview Funding FY 17-18 $500,000 Grants of up to $50,000 for organizations with a 3 to 4 year lease Grants of up to $75,000 for organizations with 5 or more years on a lease Requirements Executed a lease or LOI commencing September 1, 2016 or later. 3 year lease term minimum At risk of displacement or facing barriers to growth Reimbursement requests due by October 31, 2018 NPD and NSSP client Our Family Coalition has received financial and technical assistance services.
NSSP Overview Eligible Use of Funds Rent stipend (covering the rent differential for up to 6 months) Professional services (architectural, engineering, legal) Moving expenses Holding costs Furniture, fixtures, and equipment Tenant improvements (only for leases of 5 or more years) Staffing costs related to the real estate project Disbursement Request Process Bidding and prevailing wage required for tenant improvements Bidding: 3 quotes will be required for FFE and professional services NSSP client Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice has received technical assistance services.
NSSP Grant Review Criteria Priority is given to applicants that: Are deeply rooted in low-income and historically underserved community(ies). Face significant financial constraints but have secured recent investments. Receive support from multiple sectors. Identify positive impacts on their beneficiaries from the proposed space. Demonstrate planning to identify and mitigate financial risk. NCCLF provided consulting services to Boxcar Theatre and provided the organization with a NPD financial assistance grant to support construction at its new site.
NSSP Grant Review Criteria Length of lease term and options The extent to which the project will meet an urgent need: Urgency is evaluated based on the need for the grant, the project s timeframe and its impact on organizational financial and programmatic performance Financial stability aside from the impact of real estate market forces Project readiness and organizational capacity Portola and Excelsior Family Connections received a NSIF award in Round 1 to support the acquisition of its new facility
Overview Purpose: To serve organizations facing permanent displacement in the next 18 months, or barriers to growth due to real estate constraints Displacement risk: lease expiring in 18 months, a month-to-month lease, lack of site control, or conditions creating imminent risk of displacement Barriers to growth: organizations must provide a financial plan and narrative showing the impact/need for more program space. The Jamestown Community Center has received technical assistance services from NCCLF s NPD and NSSP programs.
Overview Services Provided: Financial and Space planning Identifying/evaluating potential sites Developing construction budgets and timelines Analyzing potential funding sources Referrals to architect, engineers, contractors, attorneys Timeline: Applications accepted on a rolling basis and approved/declined within 45 days. Reading from Tandem Partners in Early Learning. The organization was a recipient of technical and financial assistance in the Nonprofit Displacement Mitigation.
