March 1, 2017 Dear Judges, First, we would like to thank you for volunteering to judge the 2017 BEST Medicine Engineering Fair taking place on Saturday, March 11 th. Please plan to arrive on Saturday by 8:45 am. Your judging materials will be waiting for you at the judges registration table. A Judges Meeting will be held at 9:00 am to review the judging procedures and the timing needed for the collection and tabulation of your results. The judging itself will take place from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. There will be two types of judges for this event, regular and special. The regular judges will do standard engineering/science fair grading of individual projects covering a specific science category and age group. Special judges will be given instructions to assess specific attributes of all student projects. Regular Judges: All regular judges will be given a judge number. We ask that you fill out the standard judging forms that are assigned to you for each project (project names, numbers, etc. will be preprinted on each form). DO NOT trade scoring sheets with the other judges without approval from the Head Judge or Assistant Head Judge. As you complete your forms, please hand them off to the runners promptly so that we can begin tabulating results throughout the judging period. Please DO NOT wait to turn in all of your forms at the end of the judging session. The number of projects is large and the judging time is very limited. You have about 1½ hours to space out your judging. Special Judges: The special judges will be given information with your clipboard that describes your judging assignment, including a space to write the names of the top scores (which can range from 1 to 6). You will turn in this sheet when you are finished judging (by 11:30 am). Special judges will NOT be given a judge number. Most importantly, please remember the purpose of this event is to foster student interest in science and technology. Like you, these students are participating on a voluntary basis on a Saturday morning because of their interest in the field of science. Please do your best to support and nurture this interest by focusing your judging on the positive aspects of their work. Our goal is for the students to walk away from the Engineering Fair feeling excited about science and technology. We will address all of this in our briefing session/breakfast beginning at 9:00 am.
