MIDWEST MIDWEEK Brothers of Holy Cross Midwest Province - P.O. Box 460 Notre Dame, Indiana 46556-0460 June 13, 2018 Saint Joseph Grotto Have you seen the Saint Joseph Grotto? It is located back behind the Holy Cross Administration Building, on the right of the driveway as you travel down to the parking lot. You may have heard that Joseph once lost its head.
Memorial Day May 31, 2018 The day started extremely warm at Columba Hall. Brothers rose to high outside temperatures without the aid of air conditioning inside, After Mass, ten brothers drove to the Coloma Cottage joining others to form around sixteen total Brothers. Brother Joseph Fox had prepared a picnic lunch. The weather provided a cool breeze and lower temperatures further making for a most pleasant get-together. The meal ended with eating of a number of enjoyable desserts produced by talented members, especially with Chet s rhubard crunch. There were no swimmers this year since the water temp was between 53 to 58 degrees. Warnings were out to stay out of the cold water. More Pics Next Page [ 2

Holy Cross History Conference Wows Again! Thomas and Lisa Loughran Sister Linda Kors, CSC Sister Frances O Connor, CSC The 37 th annual Holy Cross History Conference opened on May 31, Thursday, at 8 PM in Holy Cross Village with an energetic Powerpoint presentation by Brother Larry Stewart on the origins of Notre Dame and the 320 mile walk last summer taken from Vincennes to Notre Dame to 4
commemorate the 175 th anniversary of the arrival of Holy Cross in northern Indiana. Brother Larry himself was on that walk. On Friday morning there were two talks, one by recently graduated Holy Cross College student Colin Crawford on the Indian priest Louis Baroux, who ministered to the Pokagan native Americans in the middle of the 19 th century; and a talk by Holy Cross Village resident Marion Casey on the Manual Training School at Notre Dame, a training school that has received scant attention by historians. On Friday afternoon members boarded a bus to travel up to Silver Creek, Michigan, home of the Potawatomi government center. On Saturday there were five papers! First came a paper on the lawyer Rev. Bill Lewers, CSC, who was in the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Then we heard from Sister Frances O Connor, past president of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who spoke to us about the Sisters work in empowering women in Bangladesh over the past century. Lisa Loughran then gave us a lively paper on the Lauth family members who joined Holy Cross over the years. This was Lisa s second paper for the annual conference. She was followed by Rev. David Burrell, CSC, who spoke on a Notre Dame hero Father John Zahm, CSC, who was a worldtraveler and friend of Teddy Roosevelt. Our final paper was given by Brother Francisco Gillette from Ghana, who spoke on threats to the union of priests and Brothers in Holy Cross over the years. The conference ended on Saturday evening with a sumptuous banquet envisioned by Brother Joseph Fox and prepared by Chef Patrick of Andre Place (Holy Cross Village): Beef Wellington and salmon were the center delights at the meal. Next year the Holy Cross History Conference will meet in late spring in Ottawa, Canada, under the guidance of Sister Jean Goulet, CSC. Brother George Klawitter 5
