Summer Work Travel The J-1 Summer Work Travel program s primary purpose is for public diplomacy efforts through cultural exchanges between people of different countries. Eligible participants are full time students visiting the U.S. during their university academic summer break. Different from a tourist visa, the student will experience U.S. culture first hand by working with Americans for up to 4 months while also participating in cultural experiences that include meeting local Americans, seeing local attractions and experiencing first hand the typical activities in their local community. Cultural experiences can be as simple as eating dinner with an American family in their home or adventurous excursions such as a weekend road trip to our nation s capital.
Once a student has successfully completed their work component, they will have up to 30 days to travel the U.S. to enjoy the sights and prepare to return home before the official start date of their university academic year. International students who participate in a J-1 program must have a sponsor who is responsible for the oversight of their program. Before the participants enter the U.S., GEC facilitates the application process and determines student eligibility to apply for a J-1 visa at the U.S. embassy in their home country. Our placements with Host Employers are screened and vetted for J-1 suitability. GEC does not partner with or approve Host Employers that cannot meet the strict vetting requirements or those that do not understand and fully support the cultural purpose of these programs. Once the student has arrived in the U.S., GEC supports the student in an effort for a positive life changing experience in the U.S.
