Welcome to Pathways to Knowledge Nurse Educator Conference Conference Overview The conference is aimed to meet the needs of Nursing Professional Development Practitioners, or any nurse or allied health educator. This year, the focus of our day will surround creative teaching strategies to develop new continuing education programs. Michele Deck, MEd, RN-BC, co-founder and CEO of G.A.M.E.S., specializing in teaching adult learners, will present two sessions to our Pathways audience. The first, Creative Teaching Strategies, will help you find new and creative ways to teach your learners. The session, with new hands on strategies for difficult concepts, will ensure that everyone gets it! You ll learn about Flow Theory and its relationship to teaching, and explore ideas to integrate simple technology into how you teach. You will be an active participant throughout this interactive session. The second session, Inject New Life into Teaching, will provide you with new and creative ideas to breathe life into some tired programs, and keep your class participant attentive, even those long classes. Learning Outcomes: NPD Practitioners will commit to implement one new way to teach their learners. NPD Practitioners will use at least one idea to help rejuvenate their teaching sessions. Call for Poster Abstracts The CVANPD Planning Committee welcomes abstracts from professional development educators on new, innovative and practical approaches that can be used in a variety of nursing professional development settings. Topics include: Onboarding/ Orientation, Competency Management, Education, Role Development, Collaborative Partnerships, and Research/EBP/QI. The poster presentation application is included in this brochure and must be received by March 30, 2018. Any questions, please contact mary.k.alexander@vcuhealth.org. Continuing Education Nurses: 5.8 Contact Hours. VCU Health is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Pathways to Knowledge Nurse Educator Conference Program OUR SPEAKER Michele Deck, MEd, BSN, RN, LCCE, FACCE presents nationally and internationally on innovative teaching methods in the field of health care education and training. She is the recipient of many honors and awards for her creativity, innovation, productivity and exemplary leadership qualities. Honors include the Association for Nursing Professional Development s (ANPD) prestigious Belinda E. Puetz Award, election to Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society, Business Woman of the Year by the National Business Council. She is co-founder and chief executive officer of G.A.M.E.S., a company that specializes in seminars on adult learning and interactive training methods, and Tool Thyme for Trainers, a company which supplies innovative and creative presentation tools for educators worldwide. She has authored twelve books on creative and involving ways to teach adults. She is a past president of Lamaze International and its current Accreditation Chair. She served on ANPD s Education committee and was a member of the editorial board of the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development for eight years. GENERAL POSTER ABSTRACT GUIDELINES The CVANPD Planning Committee welcomes abstracts from professional development educators on new, innovative and practical approaches that can be used in a variety of nursing professional development settings. Onboarding/Orientation Competency Management Education Role Development Collaborative Partnerships Research/EBP/QI ABSTRACT TITLE An abstract must have a short, specific title (containing no abbreviations) that indicates the nature of the presentation. AUTHOR NAME(S) The submitting author is designated as the primary/presenting author. ABSTRACT TEXT Describe briefly the objectives of the presentation. Standard abbreviations may be used without definition. Nonstandard abbreviations (kept to a minimum) must be placed in parentheses after the first use of the word or phrase abbreviated. Abstracts are limited to 300 words. PRESENTATION Guidelines for poster presentation will be provided to authors of accepted abstracts in April.
