ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Friends and Supporters, We are pleased to provide you with our 2012-2013 Annual Report. During this 13th year of operation, Reach for Excellence continued to bring quality education and enrichment opportunities to middle school students from the underserved population of Atlanta. About Reach for Excellence Reach for Excellence is a non-profit, classroom based academic, and leadership enrichment program. In 2001, this program was begun by the Marist Fathers and Brothers, who also operate Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia. Through its mix of academic, cultural, and community based experiences, this tuition-free program prepares talented, limited income middle school students to meet the challenges of college preparatory programs and high schools. Students, along with their families, commit to three six-week summer sessions and two years of Saturday sessions throughout the school year. As detailed in this Report, our 2013 Reach graduates will be attending rigorous, college-preparatory high school programs this fall at such schools as Woodward Academy, The Paideia School, The Galloway School, Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School, Marist School, and a number of competitive public high schools. In recognition of the effectiveness and success of the program, in March, the College Board named Reach for Excellence as the winner of the 2013 College Keys Compact Innovation Award. In addition graduates continue to strive for excellence, including one student being named Mentee of the Year by 100 Black Men of America, and another achieving Outstanding Participant status in the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program. These results are only possible through the hard work and dedication of the incredible young people who get up early, take the bus, and give up their summer days and weekends to make a better life for themselves and their families. Of course, the Reach program staff and teachers deserve the credit for making the program compelling and relevant to these young people. Finally, on behalf of the entire Board, we recognize and thank Jim MacGinnitie who served as chairman of the Reach Board for over ten years. Jim s leadership and passion for Reach has been a driving force behind the program s success. We all have big shoes to fill. Thank you for your commitment and generosity to Reach. Together, we are helping to change lives and our community. Warm regards, Rocco Testani Chairman of the Board

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR SPONSORS August 1, 2012 - July 31, 2013 The summer of 2013 marked Reach for Excellence s 13th year, culminating with the graduation of our eleventh cohort! Cohort K Class of 2013, twenty-six scholars strong, is currently attending college preparatory public high schools and independent day schools. Reach for Excellence put its three busses to good use transporting scholars during the summer on fieldtrips as well as to community service projects at St. Vincent de Paul s Distribution Center. The rising 8th graders enjoyed their trip to the Tellus Museum, Reach s first visit to this museum, and their treks to North Georgia. Additional subject related outings included visits to the CNN Center, Stone Mountain, Wesleyan School, Westminster Schools, Rabun Gap Nacoochee School, the Anne Frank Exhibit, the Atlanta History Center, and the Animal Safari. Plans are being made for our 2014 summer session when we will welcome Cohort N Class of 2016. Cohort B Class of 2004, has its first lawyer, and college graduates attending medical school, pharmacy school, and other graduate schools. In May, Reach graduates earned college degrees in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Elementary Education, and Mechanical Engineering. As I begin my eighth year as the Executive Director of Reach for Excellence, I am grateful to be a part of these talented young adults lives. With your support, the number of Reach for Excellence scholars will continue to grow, expanding their possibilities in the classroom, in their communities, and in their lives. $30,000 and above DeKalb County Human Services Grant Mr. & Mrs. W.
