The Hofstra Noyce Scholarship Program for Mathematics and Science Teaching About the Hofstra University Robert Noyce Scholarship Program for Undergraduate Math and Science Education Students The Hofstra Noyce Scholarship Program at Hofstra University is for undergraduate math and science majors who are interested in teaching mathematics or science at the secondary level in a high-need school district. This program is funded by the National Science Foundation and provides students (known as Noyce Scholars) with scholarships of $20,000 per year and a stipend for participating in a Summer Institute. Upon completion of the program, Noyce Scholars commit to teach in a high-need school district anywhere in the country for two years, for each year of the award. This commitment must be fulfilled within six years of graduation. The high-need designation applies to many districts throughout the United States large, small, urban and rural. The program is a partnership between Hofstra s School of Education (SOE), Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS), Nassau Community College and four public school districts on Long Island (Uniondale, Westbury, Roosevelt and Freeport). What Is a High-Need School District? The National Science Foundation defines a high-need school district as one that meets at least one of the following criteria: 1. It has at least one school in which 50 percent or more of the enrolled students are eligible for participation in the free or reduced price lunch program. 2. It has at least one school in which: (i) more than 34 percent of the academic classroom teachers at the secondary level (across all academic subjects) do not have an undergraduate degree with a major or minor in, or a graduate degree in, the academic field in which they teach the largest percentage of their classes; or (ii) more than 34 percent of the teachers in two of the academic departments do not have an undergraduate degree with a major or minor in, or a graduate degree in, the academic field in which they teach the largest percentage of their classes. 3. It has at least one school whose teacher attrition rate has been 15 percent or more over the last three school years. Eligibility An applicant must: Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident. Be accepted into the BA in Mathematics Education or BA in Science Education degree program at Hofstra University. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Agree to teach math or science (grades 7-12) in a high-need school district for at least two years for each year he or she receives scholarship aid. The high-need designation applies to many districts throughout the United States large, small, urban and rural. Note: Students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application Procedure All applicants are required to: Complete and sign the application form. Write a personal statement (2-3 pages) describing educational and career goals. The following should be addressed: Interest in and commitment to math or science education. Motivation for teaching in a high-need school environment. Characteristics of effective mathematics or science teaching, based on your experience. Provide two sealed letters of reference (see forms). Have a FAFSA on file with Hofstra University s Financial Aid Office. Finalists will be invited to participate in an interview at Hofstra University. All Noyce Scholars are required to: Obtain their teaching certification at Hofstra University. Meet with faculty advisers at least once a month. Work closely with assigned mentors. Participate in all Noyce Scholars activities. Complete Noyce Scholars survey and assessment forms. Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Teach in a high-need school district for a period of two years for every year of Noyce Scholarship aid received. All Noyce Scholarship recipients will sign a legally binding promissory note prior to receiving funding, and graduates will be required to provide verification of employment in a high-need school district during their service requirement. If a graduate fails to provide such verification within eight years, he or she will be required to repay the funds with interest.
