Salary and Demographic Survey Results

Executive Summary In July of 2010, Grant Professionals Association (GPA formerly AAGP) conducted a salary and demographic survey of grant professionals. The survey was distributed to all active GPA members and posted to the GPA website; 370 responses were received. This response rate is helpful in generalizing the results of the survey to the population of grant professionals as a whole, as well as guarding the results from statistical anomalies, making the results more accurate. This is the fifth annual survey of its kind. The 2010 survey was expanded to collect more information on the demographics of grant professionals as well as data on proposals funded versus proposals written. New data points and a strong response rate provide answers to the question, Who is a typical grant professional? Earns $60,297 per year as a full-time employee and receives benefits (96%) with a value of about $9,075 per year Feels very well (17%) or fairly (53%) compensated for the work s/he performs Writes about 17 grant proposals a year, of which 13 are funded States that s/he has a funding success rate of 60% Female (85%), between 45 and 54 years old (29%), White (91%), and Not Hispanic or Latino (97%) Holds a Bachelor s Degree (33%) in Business (13%), English (10%), Education (7%), Psychology (10%), Political Science (2%), Journalism (9%), or Sociology (8%). Holds a Graduate or Professional Degree (60%) A Grant coordinator (proposal development and grants/project/fiscal management 33%) or a Grant Proposal Writer (29%) Full-time employed in a job where all or most of his/her functions are related to grants (67%) Works in an Urban Area (61%) Has been in the grants field for 5-10 years (31%) and considers him or herself advanced with regard to skill level (59%) Works for a nonprofit agency (27%), higher education (15%), government agency (14%), or Hospital/Healthcare (13%) Works for a very well-established (89%) medium sized agency (45%) that employs approximately 1,875 Fulltime Equivalents (FTEs) with an annual operating budget of more than $20 million (53%), of which less than 25% is comprised of grant funds (73%) Concentrates on writing proposals to private foundations (36%), the Federal government (27%), local governments (8%) and state governments (19%) i

Additional key finding are: Most grant consultants (84%) felt adequately compensated for the work they performed, and many (69%) reported having a greater income as grant professional consultants than as employees. There were no significant differences in salary by ethnicity. While there was a difference by race ($66,400 Asian, $67,253 Black or African-American, and $63,347 White), it is noted that there were only 3 Asian and 13 Black or African- American survey respondents, compared to 240 white respondents. There are strong positive correlations between salary and age, years of experience, skill level, size of organization, and degree of establishment of organization. There are no apparent correlations between salary and individual s proposal success rate or the percentage of an organization s annual operating budget that is comprised of grants. There are no apparent correlations between success rate and skill level. There are no strong correlations between proposal success rates and years in the grants field. There are no significant changes between the results from last year to this year. ii

Raw Data The 2010 Salary and Demographic Survey was developed by GPA in response to frequent requests from GPA members regarding the salaries and demographics of grant professionals. This is the fifth installment of the GPA salary surveys, which have been conducted annually since 2006. The survey was available online through zoomerang.com. It was distributed to all active 1,645 GPA members via email in July. An invitation to complete the survey and a link on the GPA website (http://www.grantprofessionals.org/) welcomed anyone to take the survey, but noted that results would only be available to GPA members. The survey was closed on August 6, 2010. Three hundred and seventy (370) responses were received, which is about 63% of the number that responded to the 2009 survey. Cross-Tabulations: Proposal Success Rate Cross-tabulations were performed with Question 37 (i.e., What would you say your funding success rate was in 2009? In other words, what percent of the proposals that you wrote in 2009 resulted in grant funding?). Whole percentage number responses from Question 37 were collapsed into five-point ranges and the mid-point of the range was used to determine the average. For example, 6%-10% was collapsed and 8% was used to calculate the average, 11%-15% was collapsed and 13% was used as the average, and so on. The exception to this is the range of 0%- 5%, in which case 2.5% was used.
