April 2014 PAGE 3 Travel Abroad Without Leaving Your Home! I s your family looking for something new and interesting to do this summer? The International Japan Youth Exchange is looking for host families from July 26-August 16. Participating in the program has very little cost for the families. There will be driving expenses to pick up and return the students and of course the cost of food to feed them while they are staying with the family. The program allows families an interactive way to grow and have fun together, and make international friendships all without leaving their home community. Club Reports There is information about the Japanese exchange program on the 4-H website. This information can be found at: www.four-h.purdue.edu/ international/ The Jackson Crew 4-H Club met on March 10th at the Jackson Community Center to make blankets for their community service project. Twenty members and several parents helped make 14 blankets of which were donated to Rosewalk Village in Lafayette. Great Job Jackson Crew!!!

PAGE 4 Tippecanoe Tabloid Mini 4-H Mini 4-H begins in April and we are pumped that so many have signed up! This program is designed to let 2nd graders have a glimpse into what 4-H is about. Mini 4-Hers have their own special workshops that teach them about each of the project areas that they can exhibit at the fair. Here are the Mini 4-H workshop dates: Thursday, April 17: Arts & Crafts/sewing/insects Tuesday, May 20: Foods and models Tuesday, June 17: Plants, Tour of Fairgrounds, Collections Each workshop is held at the Home Ec. building at the fairgrounds and is from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Regardless of what the Mini s might choose to exhibit at the fair, they are invited and encouraged to come to all three workshops. These workshop are filled with fun and learning, so they won t want to miss them. Mini 4-H manuals will be available at the Mini 4-H workshops or can be picked up at the Extension Office at your convenience. Also, please be sure to check out the Tippecanoe County Mini 4-H Facebook page for updates. April 2014 PAGE 5 Volunteers Needed We are always in need of adults who want to share their skills, knowledge, and time with 4-Hers. If you would like to help, or know someone who would be willing to help, please let us know as soon as possible. For the 2014 4-H year, we currently need volunteers for these positions: Shooting Sports Assistant Instructors Fire Safety Food Preservation State Band & Chorus Band- June 21-23 Chorus-June 21-24 Applications are now available for State Band and Chorus. These applications are available in the Extension Office or on our County website. These are to be mailed directly to Purdue no later than Tuesday, April 15. The applications ask for a band or chorus teacher s evaluation, so do not to wait until the last minute! This is for 4-H members in grades 9-12, however, consideration will be given to those entering 8th grade. You will need to pay the cost up front. We do have money to help reduce your cost for Band and Chorus, if needed. Amount will be based on number of 4-H members requesting assistance. 4-H Camp June 4-6, 2014 @ Camp Tecumseh 4-H Camp is fast approaching! All 3rd 6th graders who are interested in attending 4-H camp can pick up applications at the Extension Office or download from our website starting April 1. The cost this year is $110. Applications, health forms, and registration fee are due back to the Extension Office by April 25. Registration is given on a first come first serve basis. Don t wait! Purdue Spring Fest Spring Fest is an annual event showcasing the lighter side of higher education. This free event is a great opportunity for students of all ages to learn about animals, art, astronomy, and much more in two full days of hands-on activities. The 2014 Spring Fest will be held Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. Highlights include the Bug Bowl, Horticulture Show, Boiler Barnyard, and School of Veterinary Medicine Open House. Stop by The Indiana 4-H Program and Purdue Collegiate 4-H Club booth to see their exciting activities! For more information about Spring Fest, visit: http://www.ag.purdue.edu/extension/springfest/pages/default.aspx.

PAGE 6 Tippecanoe Tabloid Rule Reminder Participation: Attendance and participation at 4-H meetings is highly encouraged as a part of the overall educational experience. However, attendance or participation at club meetings is not required for project completion. In order to be considered for any champion or reserve champion in a project, members must attend 3 meetings and/or workshops. The 3 meetings and/or workshops must be attended prior to June 30 th. Leaders/superintendents are responsible for turning in attendance lists by July 1. Rewarding 4-H members is encouraged. Local clubs may establish goals for attendance, exhibits, completion, etc. to meet the criteria established for awards, trips, activities or recognition as long as they do not conflict with stated county, area/or state policies. Clarification #1- a total of 3 meetings and/or workshops are required for any and all champions and reserve champions. It is NOT 3 meetings and/or workshops for each project. Clarification #2 meetings and workshops are defined as club meetings and project workshops (projects listed on enrollment form) sponsored and advertised by Tippecanoe County 4-H. Open shows are not workshops. Clarification #3 members may attend any club meeting, not just theirs. Please sign in and note what club you do belong. You MAY NOT attend workshops that have special liability releases such as shooting sports, dogs and horse and pony workshops, unless you are enrolled in those projects. Foam-core boards available for sale at the Extension Office. They are $3 each, this includes a sleeve. These boards currently meet the size requirements for all posters displayed at the fair. Be sure to get yours now!

April 2014 PAGE 7 Fun Run Join us for a 4-H Fun Color Run/Walk! On June 26 th, prior to the food drive and Jr. Leaders meeting we will have a 1 (one) mile run/walk open to all on the fairgrounds. Registration will be from 4:30-5:00 PM and we will begin at 5:15 PM. When you cross the finish line you will be showered with 4-H green powder! It is non-toxic and easy to clean, but we would recommend that you bring old clothes. At registration, if you bring 5 non-perishable items of food (above and beyond what is brought for the club competition), your name will go into a drawing for either a tee shirt or sunglasses. We will draw at 5:00 sharp! Join us, your friends and club members for a fun start to the Tippecanoe 4-H Fair! Re-Troph-It! Hey, are you spring cleaning and have boxes of trophies that you don t know what to do with? You can always take the nameplate off, put it on a plaque and donate the trophy back to 4-H! We can use all types, even if they are not a 4-H project. Just drop them off at the Extension Office between 8 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday Friday! 4-H Conferences and Workshops Just a reminder that 4-H Conferences and Workshops registration and descriptions were included in last month s tabloid. These trips are great opportunities to explore careers, take part in recreational activities, learn from Purdue faculty and staff, make friends with 4-H members across the state, and have fun. We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities! If you have questions or are unsure of which workshop is best for you, contact us in the office. We can answer your questions and connect you with members that attended workshops in the past. Remember that your application must be to the Extension Office by Tuesday, April 15!
