The 2013 Horatio Alger Scholarship Application is now available in the ALC Guidance Office. Students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, critical financial need, preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family, a 2.0 GPA or higher, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society should apply. Deadline to apply: October 25, 2012. Attention Seniors! Become a Indiana State University Gongaware Scholar! In addition to taking part in a four year career and professional development leadership program, scholars receive: FULL IN-STATE

TUITION (valued at approx. $7,898 per year), Wireless laptop computer, and $3,000 professional development account (may be used for study abroad or other leadership purposes). Eligible students must: Exhibit leadership experience and potential, earn a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, achieve a ranking in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes, and have a combined SAT score of at least 1500 out of 2400. A nomination is required for this scholarship. Talk to your counselor. Nominations are being accepted through Oct. 26, 2012. Pick up an informational brochure in the ALC Guidance Office. You are invited to attend two Fall upcoming events at Kentucky Wesleyan College! Science Day is Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Students can get information on science majors, see presentations and demonstrations, and learn about more about the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM scholarships. Second, KWC will host an OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Tour the campus and get information on financial aid, student life, college athletics and more! Seniors, if you want your family to buy a happy ad for you in the back of the yearbook, now is the time to get them to act! Parents can go to the school website, click on AHS Yearbook in the links section, and find all the info they need to buy you a happy ad. Questions may be sent to Mrs. Hoffman. Happy ads must be purchased by TODAY! The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is offering an essay contest. High School Juniors and Seniors are invited to participate. To enter, students must submit an essay between 800 and 1000 words on the provided topic: Why is free speech important at our nation s colleges and universities? (1) $10,000 first prize, (1) $5,000 second prize, and (3) $1,000 runner-up prizes will be awarded for best essays. (4) $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing. FIRE will accept essay contest entries from August 1 to Nov. 25, 2012. Winners will be notified by December 31, 2012. Visit thefire.org/contest to enter or see scholarship information in Naviance. Are you going to be 18 by Tuesday, November 6 th? Then you will be eligible to vote in the presidential elections IF you are registered to vote. If you are not registered, we can help. You can register today, during lunch in the ALC cafeteria. Just bring your ID, there will be people at the tables to help you register. So if you will be 18 by November 6 th, register to vote today. The National English Honor Society Book Drive runs now through Nov. 2. The AIM SRTs have designated boxes for their classes and the winner with the most books will receive a pizza party. Other boxes are posted in both libraries & both ALC guidance offices for anyone else who would like the participate. Any type of books are welcomed. Proceeds will go to the Julien Center. Peer Pals: Your Halloween Party is this Sunday at Monster Mini Golf. Our whole club will be attending from 1-2 pm SUNDAY. Come in costume, we will be having a contest. $5 will get you unlimited golfing and 6 tokens. The club will be bringing drinks, snacks are an additional cost. Then, on the following Tuesday, peers are meeting in B215 from 3-4 to work on suckers for our upcoming fundraiser. We need all peers in attendance, as we hope to make 600 suckers that day. We will also have peers sign up to work the lunch periods on 10/30 and 10/31 to sell the suckers. See you then! FCCLA will meet Tuesday October 9th in LGI room at the ALC until 4 pm. We are planning to tie-dye the shirts outside and talk about upcoming activities. Are you interested in Dungeon and Dragons, board games, card games, and more? Then come to the next gaming club meeting on Wednesday, October 10th in room D106. And please, leave your costumes at home

Did you miss breakfast or just need a snack for later? Come by the breakfast cart in room E107. We have a variety of snacks and juices for just 50 cents. The breakfast cart is only open before school and after first block. The Girls Basketball Program is looking for some reliable individuals to be managers this year and help the program out during season. Practice starts the second week of Fall Break, so we would like to get one or two individuals lined up before then. Please see Coach Keller in B106 before Fall Break to get more details. Great effort by the freshmen lady orioles tonight in a win over the McCutcheon Mavericks! The team was led in serving by Ali Benefiel. Win 25-14, 25-12 #3 State ranked Avon went on the road after not playing for a week to take on HCC foe McCutcheon. Avon, led by 4 aces by freshman Kennedy Wilson, pulled away for a 25-10, 25-16, 25-20 3 game sweep. Avon freshman and JV were also victorious in 2-0 sweeps..
