General Research Awards Scholarships for Postgraduate Research Students Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) The Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. Awards are funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and are tenable at an Australian tertiary institution for doctoral and masters research degrees. The benefits include a tax-exempt stipend valued at $22,500 per annum (2010 rate), relocation and thesis allowances. Competition for the APA is extremely high and successful applicants must have a first class Honours degree or equivalent. The APA/UPA application form is available from the Research Office from late August in the year prior to the first year of enrolment in the Masters or PhD. Students who will have completed one year of study towards Masters by Research or up to 2.5 years of study towards PhD by the commencement of their scholarship are also able to apply. Applications close 31 October. University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA) The University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards have conditions and allowances similar to the APA. However, the awards are funded by The University of Sydney and are not transferable to other institutions. Applicants for APA will be automatically considered for UPA. Applications close 31 October. Some APA/UPA are also available for students commencing in Semester 2 and applications close in mid June. Contact the Research Office in May. Vice-Chancellor s Research Scholarships The Vice-Chancellor s Research Scholarships (VCRS) are offered to attract students with an outstanding track record in academic achievements and research potential to pursue full-time PhD studies at The University of Sydney. Up to 20 VCRS are offered every year. In 2010, these will be awarded as top-up scholarships to highly ranked PhD students who are awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or a University of Sydney Postgraduate Award (UPA). The value of the VCRS will be up to $35,000 (tax-exempt) over a maximum period of up to 3.5 full-time years, payable at the rate of $5,000 p.a. for the first year and $12,000 for the remaining 2.5 years. A relocation allowance of up to $5,000 may be provided for students who need to relocate to Sydney to take up the scholarship. The VCRS will be awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on recommendation by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Postgraduate Awards Sub-Committee. Academic excellence (e.g. a University Medal) and outstanding research potential will be the selection criteria. The VCRS can be held at any Faculty at the University but is not transferable to other universities. Eligibility criteria for the VCRS will be the same as for the APA (refer to Section 1.1 below) except that only commencing PhD applicants will be considered. A separate application for the VCRS is not required and highly ranked applicants for the APA/UPA will be automatically considered. University of Sydney Merit Awards Similar to the VCRS, the Merit Awards are top-up scholarships offered to highly ranked APA/UPA applicants who wish to pursue full-time PhD studies at the University of Sydney. PhD students who have commenced their candidature at the University but do not hold any postgraduate research scholarships before they apply for a 2010 APA/UPA will also be considered. The value of each Merit Award will be $5,000 p.a. for up to 3.5 years for a full-time PhD and up to 60 may be offered in 2010. A separate application for the Merit Awards is not required and highly ranked applicants for the APA/UPA will be automatically considered. The Merit Awards will be awarded by the Postgraduate Awards Sub-Committee on the basis of academic excellence and outstanding research potential. Alumni Scholarships Established from accumulated funds donated by the University s alumni, 12 scholarships of $5,000 each for one year will be offered in 2010 to highly ranked APA/UPA applicants four in each of the three faculty clusters : Health; Humanities and Social Sciences; Sciences and Technology.
