EDITION 7 July 2018 The Adjutant Office Phone 856-8951 Email: adjutantnh@legionnh.org TO MY LEGION FAMILY: DEPARTMENT CONVENTION I would like to thank those that came to our Department Convention. It was a good time getting together with fellow legionnaires and discussing all the issues facing this department. We have a tough road ahead and membership is the one factor that will determine our future in this state. Ideas come and go as to how we can increase our membership or try to keep it from going down any further, but it seems those ideas fall by the wayside after the excitement of convention is over with. I ask every legionnaire in this Department to do their part in helping this organization be a major factor in the state and the country for veteran affairs. Without your support our future remains in question and so does the future of our veterans. Thanks again and hope to see you all next year! Department Executive Board Meeting Moved Saturday, August 4, 2018, 10:00 AM Place: Sweeney Post 2. This DEC will go over appointments and committee approvals. 1

National Convention Now onto National Convention. We are getting within a month of heading to the 100 th National Convention, August 24-30, 2018, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you were elected as a delegate to the National Convention during our Department Convention, the expectation is that you attend the convention. Many have already requested rooms which were due July 1 st. If you have not requested a room, then you have until the 15 th of to do so. Any remaining rooms on our allotment will return to the hotel at that time. I have all kinds of information available on the National Convention page of our website: http://www.legionnh.org/page/content/members/national-convention-information. National will be updating this info almost daily. There is also information available about sites to see and much more. I am almost out of banquet tickets as well. I have 3 left for anyone that wishes to attend the National Commanders banquet. The price is $48.00 dollars. I do have a location for registration at the convention, but as of this time the hotel has not told me what room it will be in. I will put that out the first chance I get. If you are a delegate and you are bringing a significant other with you who is not attached as a delegate for the Legion, SAL or Auxiliary. There is a guest fee of $25.00 dollars or your guest will not have access to the convention or the exhibit area. Committee assignments are coming soon, and those will be published soon. Once your assignment to a committee is done then it will be your responsibility to ensure you attend that committee meeting at the time and location indicated. Otherwise I must write to the National Adjutant a reason for your absence from the meeting. This convention will be a good one since the Legion is going into a centennial year. I expect many more events then normal just because of the centennial and I am sure it will be a good time. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. I will be arriving in Minneapolis on the 21 st in preparation for our delegation arrival. TODAY IN HISTORY Good morning Legionnaires and veteran s advocates today is Tuesday, July 10, 2018 which is Teddy Bear Picnic Day, Pick Blueberries Day, National Pina Colada Day, and Cow Appreciation Day. 1925: In Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called Monkey Trial begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law. On this day in 1850, Vice President Millard Fillmore is sworn in as the 13th president of the United States. President Zachary Taylor had died the day before, five days after falling ill with a severe intestinal ailment on the Fourth of July. On this day in 1940, the Germans begin the first in a long series of bombing raids against Great Britain, as the Battle of Britain, which will last three and a half months, begins. 1863: On this day, Union troops land on Morris Island near Charleston, South Carolina, and prepare for a siege on Battery Wagner, a massive sand fortress on the island. (This is the battle made famous by the movie Glory with Denzel Washington among others.) 2

The cost is $25 per flag and all proceeds go to The Moving Wall event in July. Veterans targeted by robocalls This issue is country wide and if you have been targeted please read this article. MINNEAPOLIS - They call a lot, said John Fantauzzi. I ve had two of them in the last two days. The Air Force veteran contacted KARE 11 tired of being plagued by the seemingly daily robocalls. 3

They claim to be from the VA or something about VA benefits, he said while picking up his phone to play one of the voicemails left on his answering machine. Trying to contact you because your VA profile was flagged for two potential benefits, the caller states adding the benefits are time sensitive. I was kind of concerned that this was a phishing or some kind of scam call, Fantauzzi said. So, I called the VA and asked them to check and see if there was any issues regarding my benefits, and they told me that there was nothing in my records to indicate any issues with anything. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reports consumers received more than 18 billion robocalls in 2017 and they are the number one complaint the agency receives. What really raised red flags for Fantauzzi was the calls show up on his caller ID from a local 612 area code. However, when you try calling that number back, you get an automated message stating we re sorry, your call can not be completed as dialed. The local number has been faked. It is what s known as neighbor spoofing, where the caller ID information is manipulated in ways to make it appear the call was placed locally. Neighbor spoofing is used by scammers to get you to pick up your phone and to potentially steal your money or personal information, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a video posted to the FCC website. In the past year, the FCC has proposed over $200 million in fines against illegal spoofing by telemarketers, and the commission adopted new rules allowing phone companies to block calls that are likely to be fraudulent. Under the Truth in Caller ID Act, FCC rules prohibit any person or entity from transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller ID information with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongly obtain anything of value. If no harm is intended or caused, spoofing is not illegal. There are however stricter rules for telemarketers. FCC rules specifically require that a telemarketer: Transmit or display its telephone number or the telephone number on whose behalf the call is being made, and, if possible, its name or the name of the company for which it is selling products or services. Display a telephone number you can call during regular business hours to ask to no longer be called. This rule applies even to companies that already have an established business relationship with you. KARE 11 wanted to know who was calling Fantauzzi from the spoofed phone number. In the voicemail they leave a toll-free number for veterans to call them back. The first time KARE 11 Investigative Reporter A.J. Lagoe called the line and notified the person that answered they were speaking with a reporter, they hung up. The second time Lagoe called, a woman who identified herself as Natalie with Veterans Services answered. After being asked several times she stated she was located in Florida and was calling veterans like Fantauzzi to provide orientation to veterans. She refused to elaborate on what the orientation was for, stating that was private information for the veterans. 4

When asked who owned Veterans Services, the company she claimed to be working for, she said she didn t know and they were probably in Bora Bora somewhere having fun. When KARE 11 checked, the Florida Division of Corporations showed no active record of a company by the name Veterans Services. The Department of Veterans Affairs sent KARE 11 an email stating This is not a VA number nor is it affiliated with VA in any way. If you think you've been the victim of a spoofing scam, you can file a complaint with the FCC. "That Ragged Old Flag" I walked through a county courthouse square On a park bench, an old man was sittin there. I said, "Your court house is kinda run down, He said, "No, it will do for our little town". I said "your old flag pole kinda leaned a little bit, And that s a ragged old flag you got hanging on it". 5

He said "have a seat", so I sat down, He said, "is this your first visit to our little town" I said, "I think it is" He said "I don t like to brag, but we re kinda proud of "That Ragged Old Flag" "You see, we got a little hole in that flag there, When Washington took it across the Delaware. It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it, writing "Oh Say Can You See" It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson tugging at its seams. It almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag, But she waved on tho. It got cut with a sword in Chancellorsville, Got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg, And the south wind blew hard on "That Ragged Old Flag" 6

On Flanders Field in World War I, She took a bad hit from a Bertha Gun, She turned blood red in World War II She hung limp and low by the time that one was through, She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam. The Native Americans, The Black, Yellow and White All shed red blood for the Stars and Stripes. And here in her own good land, She s been abused, burned, dishonored, denied and refused, And the very government for which she stands Has been scandalized throughout out the land. And she s getting thread bare, and she s wearing kinda thin, But she s in pretty good shape, for the shape she s in. Cause she s been through the fire before and she can take a whole lot more. So we raise her up every morning And we bring her down slow every night, 7

We don t let her touch the ground, And we fold her up right. On second thought I do like to brag Cause I m mighty proud of "That Ragged Old Flag" Written by Johnny Cash Veteran Events & Announcements If you want to participate in the Centennial event being held at the NH International Speedway, in Loudon, there are discounted tickets available.
