They call on Catholics to carefully form their consciences, pray, learn the issues, consider candidates character and use principles of Catholic social teaching to guide them. See their statement in English and Spanish, as well as four principles of Catholic social teaching and other voter resources on the Virginia Catholic Conference website at www.vacatholic.org. Peace and good! We welcome Bishop Loverde to the parish this weekend and thank him for his ministry as our Bishop - years filled with joy, mercy, love, humility, and pastoral care. On behalf of the pastoral team, staff, and parishioners, it is our hope and prayer that his years of retirement will bring him ample opportunity to enjoy the reflection on his faithful ministry and to continue to deepen his love for Christ. When Saint John XXIII began the Second Vatican Council, he said: "The Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity." These words capture the ministry and vocation of Bishop Loverde. As we conclude our reflection on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, Bishop Loverde shared the following insights regarding Francis early life: Francis had not always followed the road to holiness. For about twenty-five years, he was addicted to sin and accustomed to vice. Francis himself tells us: I lived in sin during that time. In time, though, God s grace won out; Francis turned back to God and gave himself over to prayer and penance. He heard the Crucified Christ tell him: Francis, repair My church and later he realized that this mandate focused not so much on church buildings in need of repair but on the Church as the Body of Christ whose members were seriously in need of conversion and repentance, in need of spiritual repair. He preached the Gospel with simplicity and zeal. He lived what he preached. His words still ring true and energize us: Preach the Gospel always! If necessary, use words. (2008, October 4) Francis did live out a full life as a youth, however, he did realize that there was more to life. Bishop Loverde has been our loving, humble, and pastoral shepherd. He has graced and inspired us all. Our hearts overflow with love for and gratitude to him! As our Bishop, he "Encouraged and taught us with Patience." Dear Parishioners: With the November 8 election just two weeks away, many Americans are rightfully concerned about how to vote and about the election s influence on the future of our nation. More seems to be at stake with this election than in previous years. I hope that, in preparing for the upcoming election you have been able to benefit from the resources provided by the Virginia Catholic Conference, as well as my Forming Our Consciences series in the Arlington Catholic Herald. And yet, we must remember that prayer and fasting will always remain our most important resources. I highly recommend the Knights National Novena, which commends our nation to Mary, the Immaculate Conception. The novena begins on Sunday, October 30th and concludes on November 7th, the eve of the election. You can download a A copy of that novena at http://www.kofc.org/un/en/resources/ news/national-novena.pdf entitled: Consider coordinating for 2017 Arts & Craft Fair. Please prayerfully consider volunteering so that The Ladies Society can continue their mission for St. Joseph Church. Contact Mary Kirby at 703-855-3294 or kirbym59@gmail.com ST. JOSEPH OUTREACH PRAYER TEAM Whether you or a loved one is sick or in trouble and in need of God s help or you want to offer praise for the good things He s done, all your needs can be prayed for. If you, a family member, or a friend is in need of special prayers, please call our Hotline at (703) 880-4343 to leave us your prayer requests. Through this work, those who are frail and/or homebound will know the very special place they have within the heart of the Church and realize the very powerful gifts and graces God has given them and their families. We are in need of a backup Team Coordinator to receive and route the prayer requests. If you are interested in becoming a member of the St. Joseph Outreach Prayer Team, or being the backup Coordinator, please call (703) 880-4343 and someone will return your call.
