About the Volunteering Waikato Volunteer Excellence Awards This awards evening is our (and your) opportunity to thank and recognise the individual and collective good done in our community by volunteer effort. Why nominate someone? The aim of the Volunteering Waikato Excellence Awards is to highlight the volunteer effort that goes into helping not-for-profit groups achieve their potential. It recognises individual and team achievement, while publicly acknowledging all voluntary effort. These awards are also an opportunity for all community organisations to publicly express their thanks to the volunteers. All nominees receive a Certificate of Appreciation to mark the occasion of their nomination for the award. Who can be nominated? Any volunteer or volunteer team working for a non-forprofit organisation can be nominated. The awards are open to all volunteers in the Greater Waikato. Your organisation does not have to be a member of Volunteering Waikato to make a nomination. The judging process The judges separately review and assess all entries and then discuss their assessments as a group. The criteria used by the judges closely follows the questions asked on the nomination form. An important aspect of ensuring your nomination has every chance at success is to make sure you complete each section thoroughly. Please provide all the information requested in detail. 2017 Volunteer Excellence Award Recipients Margaret Healey - Volunteer of the Year - WINNER Seventeen years ago Margaret saw an article in the paper about St Vincent de Paul needing volunteers, and she is still there - helping to feed those in need. When you combine that will all the other volunteer roles she has taken on over the years, it is easy to see why Margaret is an outstanding volunteer. She has a huge heart, and cares for others, no matter who they are. Nominated by St Vincent de Paul George Dempsey - Volunteer of the Year - RUNNER UP Not content with volunteering 24/7 as a Puppy Raiser, George also oversees two thirds of Assistance Dogs Donation Boxes in Hamilton. Puppy raising is a year-long commitment, and George s efforts mean that families with children with severe disabilities have extra support and assistance with everyday life. 2016 Volunteer Excellence Award Recipients Volunteer of the Year - Youth Award - WINNER Gary Ho Gary has demonstrated a genuine interest and care in showing refugees how to navigate New Zealand culture and society, overcoming language and cultural barriers along the way. His efforts go a long way to ensuring new Kiwis can find their own way and establish independence. Nominated by the New Zealand Red Cross Volunteer of the Year - Youth Award - RUNNER UP Eve Boister Eve literally goes out of her way every week to volunteer, ensuring up to 170 children and adults receive sandwiches, fruit, milo and food parcels. She sees the disparity between the haves and the have-nots and wants to be a part of the solution. In her own words volunteering at St Vincent De Paul is a start. Nominated by St Vincent de Paul Team Excellence Award - WINNER Age Concern Shopping Service The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little word extra, and this is the hallmark of our 80 shopping service volunteers. They show genuine kindness, care and concern for their clients. allowing them to maintain a higher level of independence and remain in their own homes. Nominated by Age Concern Hamilton Team Excellence Award - RUNNER UP Cancer Society s Lions Lodge Volunteers These volunteers directly contribute to the Cancer Society s mission of reducing the impact of cancer in our communities by creating a home away from home at the Lodge. Guests are provided with the help and companionship of trained volunteers that provide practical help, a smiling face and a listening ear. Volunteer of the Year Award 2018 Individual Nomination Background This award recognises and honours people who have made an outstanding contribution in our community. Nominees will be judged on their voluntary work within the nominating organisation and the wider community. These services must be given voluntarily to help others without expecting any personal or financial gain. There will be two overall individual winners, one in the general category, one in the youth category. Criteria Volunteers up to the age of 25 may be nominated in the youth category (see separate nomination form) Your organisation must be a registered Trust or Incorporated Society. A winner (individual or team) of a Volunteer Excellence Award within the past two years will not be eligible for nomination by the same organisation in the same category. An organisation may make a maximum of one nomination per category. Organisations with multiple branches can nominate in each category per branch. Nominations must be typed or clearly written. It recognises and honours people who have been volunteering for 25 years or more in their community. Nominees will be judged on their voluntary work within the nominating organisation, any other organisations that they have volunteered for during this time, and their impact on the wider community. Criteria Nominees for this award must have been volunteering in the community for 25 years or more, but not necessarily for the same organisation. Your organisation must be a registered Trust or Incorporated Society. A winner (individual or team) of a Volunteer Excellence Award within the past two years will not be eligible for nomination by the same organisation in this category. Volunteer Team Excellence Award 2018 Team Nomination Background While the awards have traditionally marked the efforts of individual volunteers, Volunteering Waikato is very aware of the project work done by the many community organisations that involve volunteers. The focus of this award is on either projects undertaken by organisations or effective and efficient service operations, and programmes run by organisations which involve volunteers and make a positive community contribution. Criteria Your organisation must be a registered Trust or Incorporated Society. The project nominated must have run during 2017, and must have been substantially run by volunteers. The Board or Committee of your organisation must agree to the nomination. A winner (individual or team) of a Volunteer Excellence Award within the past two years will not be eligible for nomination by the same organisation in the same category.
