FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FULTON COUNTY HERITAGE DAYS JUNE 13, 14 & 15 HIGHLIGHTS. MCCONNELLSBURG, PA. May 21, 2014- (LOCAL MEDIA) - Scenic, rural Fulton County holds a unique place in Civil War History it is the site where the first two Confederate soldiers were killed north of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1863 and the site of the last Confederate Bivouac north of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1864. In 1863, Gen Imboden s troops were in Fulton and Western Franklin Counties in late June 1863 as part of GEN Lee s Gettysburg Campaign. W.M. Moore, Virginia and F. A. Shelton, North Carolina were killed one day before one of the worst battle of the civil war the Battle of Gettysburg. On 30 July 1864, Generals McCausland and Johnson bivouacked in Fulton County after they burned the town of Chambersburg, PA earlier that same day. Set aside June 13, 14, and 15 to enjoy many Fulton County Heritage Days events during the entire weekend in Fulton County, PA, -- a time you won t want to miss! Here are some of the highlights. The weekend will commence on Friday, June 13 at 10 a.m. with an official Proclamation at the Fulton County Court House to start both the annual Strawberry Festival and Fulton County Heritage Days. Fulton County s annual STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL with good food, crafts and live entertainment will be in full swing Friday
and Saturday. Matthew Dodd will present Songs and Stories of the Civil War at the Court House on Friday at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday at 11 a.m., Michelle Lynn Layton will present a concert at the Court House Band Shell. The Fulton County Fairgrounds Association will sponsor its second Screen on the Green Movie Shenandoah, starting 8:30-9:00pm (when it gets dark) on June 13, 2014 at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. The feature FULTON COUNTY HERITAGE DAYS (FCHD) event on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m. will be the Civil War Reenactment of the last Confederate Bivouac that occurred in Fulton County 150 years ago. The event, being held at the Moore Farm, 16937 Great Cove Road, McConnellsburg, PA, will offer a Living History Village and Civil War vendors along with food and drink vendors. The beautifully rebuilt barn will provide ample room for Living History educational speakers as well as a highly anticipated Civil War-era barn dance and caller Saturday night with the 2 nd South Carolina String Band from 7-10 p.m. The Living History village will have first person demonstrations of Medical, Christian and Sanitary Commissions, cooking, Ladies Relief Societies, Seamstresses & Fulton County Civilians. Hourly history programs will be presented in the barn by Union and Confederate Generals, their respective staffs, to include: Confederate Generals Lee, Anderson, McCausland and others and Union Generals Meade, Williams, and Doubleday; tales of the spies during the Civil War; the task of the Cavalry; period Church Service; how to become a Civil War reenactor or living historian. Additionally, Steve French and Jeff Whetstone, authors of books pertaining to the civil war, will be signing books at the Civil War Reenactment site. The Fulton House Museum will be OPEN Friday, June 13 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., on
Saturday, June 14 from 9a.m.-5 p.m., and on Sunday, June 15 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Volunteers will be dressed in period costumes and will have exhibits pertaining to the Civil War on display. There will be free horse wagon rides on Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Court House Square. The Fulton County Library will have an OPEN HOUSE on Friday, June 13 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with a book sale open to the public. The historic Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church, Thompson Road in southern Fulton County near Hancock, MD, and was used as a Union Hospital, will be open on Saturday, June 14 from 3-5 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. on that day, Mr. John Menzer, author of the book If These Walls Could Talk, will give a presentation about the soldier s names written on the church walls. In 1929, the United Daughters of the Confederacy Elliot Grays Chapter, Richmond, VA, the North Carolina Division, and the Virginia Division erected a monument to honor to Confederate Soldiers W. B. Moore of Virginia and F. A. Shelton of North Carolina. On Saturday, June 14, they will rededicate this Monument at the Fulton County Courthouse Band Shell on at 5 pm. Reenactors will participate in this ceremony through the Chaplin, Honor Guard, and Bugler. Members of the Mercersburg Community Band will provide music for this event. The McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Company will have a Bingo Bonanza on Friday, June 13 and their famous Chicken BBQ at the Fire Hall on Saturday June 14 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The McConnellsburg Alumni & Friends building will be open Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. with crafts, artists and other vendors with items for shopping. On Saturday, June 13, Front Porch Bluegrass with Lizzie and The Yeehaw Gang will perform from 11 a.m. 1 p.m. at the Yankee Mercantile, Websters Mills, PA.
