About IEEE Smart Village Our Mission IEEE Smart Village empowers off-grid communities through education and the creation of sustainable, affordable, locally owned entrepreneurial energy businesses. Our Vision To bring basic electrical and educational services to more than 50 million people by 2025. 10 10
Our Approach Problem: Nearly 4 billion people around the world today live without reliable access to electricity including 1.1 billion who live without any access at all Solution: Bring electricity and cultivate education in communities with our scalable entrepreneur model Goal: Seed $2 million per year; 10 country startups per year; each with a goal to reach 1 million people, positively affecting at least 50 million in 10 years 11 11
Our Method Totally volunteer managed and supported, and through the fundraising efforts of the IEEE Foundation, IEEE Smart Village creates selfsustaining social enterprises: EMPOWER Local entreprene urs to finance, build, operate, maintain and grow micro-utility businesses and seed-fund local entrepreneurs to finance, build, operate, maintain and grow microutility businesses REINVEST all profits and ownership into the community ASSIST in raising venture and loan capital to take program to scale A Proven Model LINK participants through our communitybased open curriculum Already serving more than 50,000 people in 34 villages via pilots in Cameroon, Haiti, India, Kenya, Nigeria and South Sudan GROW communities capacity to live sustainably by integrating holistic goods and services 12
Our Communities LEGEND Current Communities The entire community participates in the success of the local electricity business that IEEE Smart Village nurtures, and profits are reinvested in community empowerment through economic development and learning. Sustainable Technology IEEE Smart Village Flagship Products: modular, easy-to-install PV solar-based community charging stations SunBlazer II 1.5kW base station, includes rechargeable battery packs and home lighting kits with an auxiliary outlet for other DC powered devices SunBlazer LITE 500W to 1,050W base station including 100-200Ah at 24V station batteries and home lighting kits The Benefits Immediate deployment with no infrastructure needed at site Self-sustainable under a business plan and pays for itself within 2-3 years Configured to meet the socio-economic conditions 14 of the community 14
Community-Based Education Through a unique partnership with Regis University and the Posner Center for International Development in Denver, Colorado, IEEE Smart Village offers: Development Practice degree certificate: readying practitioners in a holistic approach in community development and humanitarian engineering, readying them to apply best practices in their communities and organizations Community Entrepreneurship vocational training, providing in-country on-site entrepreneurs with sufficient, wide-ranging knowledge to deploy, maintain and franchise an IEEE Smart Village seed-funded micro-utility Courses of both components of the IEEE Smart Village education program are pushed from the IEEE Global Classroom located at the Posner Center 15
Our Educational Impact Community Empowerment Smart Solutions Hands-on Training Integrated Education The renewable energy solutions that IEEE Smart Village seed funds to local entrepreneurs in off-grid communities 16 Vocational training fosters market sustainability skills to deploy, maintain and franchise local micro-utilities Students examine scalability with four integrative, comprehensive and fully accredited courses 16
Join Our Mission VOLUNTEERS Help with organizational design and expansion of the program, participate in working groups dedicated to solving hardware and software challenges and assist with implementation in the field AMBASSADORS Students and young professionals gain experience working in the field to assist and mentor our micro-utility deployment programs There are also corporate sponsorship opportunities for companies looking to fund an ambassador for an in-country deployment or provide a loaned executive to volunteer PARTNERS Multi-national NGO's, large humanitarian organizations, government ministries and associated programs have an opportunity to reach mutual goals for global expansion of the initiative by partnering with us NGO PROGRAMS In-country NGOs and other organizations with humanitarian outreach programs, become an in-country host partner to establish a network of micro-utility stations nationwide DONATE To accomplish our mission, IEEE Smart Village depends on the financial generosity of foundations, corporations and individual donors 17
