The newsletter is going to be published bi-annually in January and July. The purpose of the newsletter is to serve as a communication channel to update friends and stakeholders of our Department on its news and recent development. In 2009, the Department has made a number of successful achievements. On its infrastructure, the Centre for Accounting Services and Training (CAST) started its normal operations to provide workplace experience simulation training and SAP software training to our accountancy students under the guidance of a nine-member advisory committee consisting of accountancy practitioners from auditing and accounting professions. On collaboration with secondary schools, with the support by the Hong Kong Association for Business Education, the Department organized the first territory-wide mock examination and review session on Advanced Level Principles of Accounts which attracted more than 1,300 Secondary Seven students. The Centre for Legal and Administrative Practices (CLAP) also held a workshop for secondary school students which included activities on common legal problem seminar and a court visit. On the development of our students, our accountancy students obtained the Best Presenter Award and the 3rd Runner-up Award in the HKIAAT Accounting and Business Management Case Competition. They also won the Champion of Outstanding Cheering Team Award and the 2nd Runner-up Award in the ACCA Rickshaw Race. With the support of Rotary Club of New Territories, the Department also launched the Professional Mentorship Scheme for its higher diploma graduating students. Rotarians, business executives, lawyers, accountants and our alumni were invited to mentor our graduating students who could benefit from the experience sharing with these professionals to prepare for their future work and further studies. Inside the newsletter, you can also find the names of students who receive scholarships for their outstanding academic and extra-curricular activity performance from various donors who have contributed generously to support our Department and students. To these donors, I would like to express my gratitude for their generous contributions and care for our students development. Looking ahead, our Department will continue to strive for excellence in its learning and teaching. In particular, we will place much emphasis on extending our Workplace Experience Programme in order to provide more opportunities of internships to our students and to strengthen the readiness of our graduating students for employment. Our strong linkage with secondary schools through activities, like the mock examination organized jointly with the Hong Kong Association for Business Education, will continue in this year. Lastly, may I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous Year of Tiger! 1 David Tam Head, Department of Business Administration IVE (Tuen Mun)

Professional Linkage Professional Mentorship Programme Kick-off Ceremony The programme consists of a series of academic and leisure activities to enhance our final year students learning with a view to facilitating their whole person development and widening their perspectives through the interactions with the mentors. As a result, it can create a positive and supportive alliance with the Department, alumni and employers and professionals of different industries. On 20 November 2009, our Department held the kick-off ceremony of this Programme. One hundred and twenty-six mentees and fiftyeight mentors joined together in the hall of the campus. Before the ceremony, mentees had been given an induction course introducing the purpose of the programme. Then the mentors met their mentees who were waiting at the assigned tables. To start the ceremony, Mrs. Deanna To, Principal of IVE (Tuen Mun), gave a welcoming address. Then the guest speakers, Mr. Dee Wong, President of Rotary Club of New Territories, and Mr. James Ip delivered their speeches respectively on external networking and alumni networking. The kick-off was officiated by a pin wearing action by VIPs, mentors and mentees altogether. Afterwards, they started their informal and relaxed networking while enjoying the light refreshment. Each group of mentor and mentees was also called upon to have a group photo. Mentors and mentees began their first connection in a friendly atmosphere. Visit to Local Taxation Bureau of Shenzhen On 11 November 2009, Mr. David Tam, Head of the Department, and accountancy course team members participated in the delegate of a visit to Local Taxation Bureau of Shenzhen. The delegate was led by the Legislative Councilor, the Honourable Cheng Yiu-tong, and consisted of professional accountants who were members of the General Union of Hong Kong Accounting Professionals and Staff. The objective of the visit was to give Hong Kong professional accountants an opportunity to update the recent development of taxation policy in Shenzhen municipal area and to network with the local officials. The Honorable Cheng Yiu-tong (left) and professional accountants from Hong Kong. In the morning, the delegate arrived at the headquarters of Taxation Bureau and had a detailed briefing and discussion on the taxation administration in Shenzhen with senior officials of the Bureau led by Mr. Xu Jin Qiang, Deputy Director and Mr. Wang Xian Rong, Director of International Taxation Division. After the discussion, the participants had a networking lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon, the delegate visited the Market Regulatory Department where the Deputy Director Yuen Jor Shing briefed the delegate the functions of the department. ACCA Charity Fun Day Energetic participation in ACCA Charity Fun Day. The 13 th ACCA Charity Fun Day was held on 20 December 2009 at Charter Road, Central. There were totally eighteen students from our Higher Diploma in Accountancy participating in this charity function. Last year, our students took part in the rickshaw race. This time, the students participated in this event as game booth helpers, and the booths were open to the public. Different varieties of toys were sponsored by various corporations as prizes. The money from the sale of game tickets would be donated to sponsor Helping Hand, International Social Service Hong Kong Branch Tin Shui Wai (North) Integrated Family Service Centre and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association. Meanwhile, the rickshaw race successfully attracted the participation of more than 30 rickshaw teams and thousands of visitors, turning Charter Road Sunday Pedestrian Precinct into a fabulous carnival. Although the student helpers were required to carry out their duties for a long period from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, they managed to perform their task well. All of them were impressed by the funny atmosphere and showed interests to participate again in next year s Charity Fun Day! The students concluded that they had learnt to take social responsibility by participating in this meaningful event. Workplace Experience Programme The Workplace Experience Programme is Moving Forward Tony Lim The Department of Business Administration at IVE (Tuen Mun) runs Higher Diploma courses in Legal, Accountancy and Business Administration disciplines. The Department emphasizes on offering practical trainings to foster students knowledge in order to unleash their potentials. In view of this, the Department has been operating a structured Workplace Experience Progamme for a number of years. The Workplace Experience Programme encompasses student placements during both term time and summer vacation - from internship to performing real-life projects, serving as student helpers for events, running sales booths or road shows and so on. Cheng Mei Ting (middle) from Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies working as a summer intern in a law firm in the mainland in 2009. The Programme is supported by dedicated placement officers of the Department and is backed up by pre-attachment training from the Student Affairs Office. The Department stresses the significance of professional conduct and ethics, instilling students with positive attitude in work and for life. 3 Increasingly, the Programme helps more and more students in their learning and widens their perspectives for future careers. We hereby express our gratitude to the participating companies for their enthusiastic support! They are most obliging in offering value-added internships, with career talks and on-the-job trainings, to our students. Alumni News LASAA Annual Dinner The annual dinner organized by the Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association (LASAA) on 25 November 2009 was a great success. Members had a wonderful gathering. During the dinner, the past graduates shared their experience with the fresh ones. It was also a very good opportunity for members graduated in different years to exchange their working and study experience. The lucky draw brought members to high spirits as they got excited each time when the master of ceremony read out a lucky member. Near the end, the members took photos together. We all enjoyed an unforgettable evening. Cross-Border Visit Study Tour to Zhuhai This year, the Department organized a 5-day study tour to Zhuhai for the students of the module China Business Studies from 9 to 13 November 2009. There were 83 students joining the tour. During the tour, students attended a series of lectures delivered by professors of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai and senior executives from various commercial fields and government departments. Topics covered were varied but centred around the business and legal environment and development of Pearl River Delta and the other parts of China, including China law and tax, China government framework, human resources issues, interviewing techniques, logistics development and China financial development. Visiting the manufacturing plant of GTMC. Besides attending lectures, students visited a number of enterprises, including Guangzhou Toyota Motor Company Limited (GTMC), Brilliant Footwear Co., Ltd., Italina Ornament (Zhongshan) Co., Ltd., Zhujiang Brewery Co., Ltd., and Star Shine Cargo Service (Shenzhen) Company Limited. Also, a few exchange activities were provided for our students to play and work together with students of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai, including sports games, job interviews, group discussions, presentations and a performance. Students of the two institutions mixed and cooperated very well in these activities. Throughout these activities, our students made lots of friends with students of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai with the exchange of phone numbers, email addresses and even small souvenirs. Daisy Chan Seminars, Visits and Workshops Professional Seminar Series - The Route to a Professional Seminars on similar topics were organized every year to prepare students for their future careers. The seminars introduced to them the access to becoming a professional upon graduation in IVE. This year around 500 students attended the Professional Seminars which were successfully held on 13 November 2009 as part of the events of IVE (Tuen Mun) Open Day 2009. It was our great honour that the following guest speakers came to share their experience with students: Mr. Fergus Wong, Co-Chairman, Tax Sub-Committee, ACCA HK Mr. David Tam presenting a souvenir to Miss Karen Chang. Miss Karen Chang, Director, Retailer Services Hong Kong, The Nielsen Company Mr. Johnson M. H. Tsang, Partner, Tsang, Chan & Woo, Solicitors & Notaries and Agents for Trade Marks & Patents In the first session, Mr. Fergus Wong shared his views on how to be a professional accountant. An IVE student is not at a disadvantage as compared to a degree holder. The formula to a professional accountant is examination, ethics and experience, said the accountant. Through lively and vivid presentation slides, Miss Karen Chang reviewed her own career path as a specialist in market research. She conveyed three important mottos that brought a rewarding career - Think Big, Aim High and Power of Can-do Attitude. Mr. Johnson Tsang used an interactive question and answer approach in the third session. Referring to a hand-out on the Hong Kong Legal Profession, Mr. Tsang encouraged students to develop the right kind of skills and manner for providing legal services. Students were eager to raise questions at the end of each session. They agreed that the seminars were inspiring and assisted them in choosing whatever career paths they would eventually follow. Professional Accounting Talk on Fair Value Accounting In order to facilitate students understanding on the practical use in accounting standards, students from Higher Diploma in Accountancy attended a talk on Fair Value Accounting organized by General Union of Hong Kong Accounting Professionals and Staff on 15 December 2009. Mr. Nelson Lam, FCPA (Practising), shared his valuable experiences in different industries on fair value accounting and as an example, the ways by which the HSBC adopts the change in the reclassification of financial assets. As the financial reporting is becoming more complicated and fastchanging in the world, accounting students have to update their knowledge continuously. Angel Yeung Students listening attentively to the speaker. LAS Students Found their Classrooms at High Court Learning is not confined to school walls. Students of the Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies (LAS) found their classrooms at the High Court end November 2009. There, they visited a couple of courtrooms and observed the undergoing of a wide range of civil litigation proceedings including Case Management Summons (CMS), Check List Review, Case Management Conference (CMC), Pre-Trial Review, Charging Order and Bankruptcy Order. Of all these proceedings, CMS and CMC are a new regime created under the Civil Justice Reform, effective from 2 April 2009. The exposure to all these proceedings not only helps keep students abreast of the latest development in law and complements their studies of the module Civil Litigation Procedure but also offers them an opportunity of observing how legal principles were translated into practice. All in all, the greatest lesson learned from the court visit is to appreciate how justice is seen to be done. Chan Kai Ho LAS students at the High Court. Students Footprints at the Business of Intellectual Property Forum 5 Six students from Higher Diploma in Business Administration attended the Business of Intellectual Property (BIP) Forum of the Business of Design Week (BODW) 2009. The BIP Forum was organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Intellectual Property Department of HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Federation of Industries and Hong Kong Productivity Council. The forum provided an insightful platform for IP experts and companies to share critical strategies and situations in creation, management and deployment of IP rights. The students widened their exposures through international and local experts presenting the latest trends and development, and sharing of valuable experience and insights on the opportunities to innovation and IP, amidst new developments in the Pearl River Delta. Lisa Choi An unforgettable learning experience at the BIP Forum.
