Boulder POST #10 Legionnaire Volume 36 Issues 3 & 4 www.boulderlegion.com Check website for obituaries and latest Club information. March/April 2014 American Legion On the Legion s national website, it lists a Temporary Charter Date of 06/23/1919 for Post 10 Boulder. It also shows a Permanent Charter Date of 08/25/1921. This small anomaly did not go unnoticed. The founding father of the American Legion is regarded as Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. He was the eldest son of the 26th President of the San Juan Hill fame. After peace was declared for WW I, Roosevelt and a National Guard officer named George A. White met with Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. a group of non-career officers in the YMCA building in Paris France on February 15, 1919. From this meeting about 2,000 invitations were sent to officers and enlisted men to attend a Paris convention on March 15, 1919. In addition, a notice was published in the March 14, 1919 issue of the Stars and Stripes for all officers and enlisted men in Paris at the time to attend and participate. This March 15th convention is actually the birth of the American Legion. Post Number One, the General John J. Pershing Post, was chartered on May 19, 1919 in Washington DC. Because a St. Louis caucus that same year ruled that a Post could not be named after anyone living, the Pershing Post changed its name to George Washington Post 1. Ultimately Congress granted a National Charter to the American Legion in September of 1919. The formal founding convention was held in Minnesota on November 10-12, 1919. Why were Legion Posts being formed before the government legalized them? Was that the reason Boulder Post 10 received a temporary Charter on June 23, 1919? That was three months before the National Charter was issued in September of 1919. Why we waited until August 25, 1921 before we got a permanent charter is a mystery to me. In any event, on June 23, 2014 our Post will be 95 years old. On August 25, 2014 we will have been legal for 93 years. Either event or, perhaps both, are cause for a celebration. Also, do not forget our Legion birthday party on March 18th at 1900 hours. On a sadder note, in the closing months of 2013 and January of 2014 ten members of our Post have slipped away from us. Unfortunately in the emotional trauma that surrounds the passing of a loved one the information does not always get to our Post in a timely manner. Many names come to us by word of mouth while others are from obituaries in the newspapers. Occasionally, a hand written script across the front of a notice for current dues proclaims Deceased. Because our bulletin is printer every other month, the lead time between putting it to bed and it s berth is such that often the information is lost in the time line. Each one is important to us but occasionally a special pillar of our Post is lost in the process. Such an incident has happened with Wesly Brown. My apology goes out to his family. Here is a list of the deceased and their years of service to the Legion as of this printing. Edward Andrusko 6 yrs; James Berry 39 yrs; Wesley Brown 46 yrs; Bob Degrazio 12 yrs; Gordon Kalweit 19 yrs; Robert Maloney 10 yrs; Robert Reichstein 68 yrs; Lyndle Rooks 20 yrs; Don Spangler 21 yrs and Kenneth Weaver 8 yrs. These represent a total of 249 years of service to the American Legion. To the dearly departed, Thank you for your service to the United States and to the American Legion. Roland Siebold, Commander

SAL Squadron 10 Spring time is on the way (well, let s hope so) which means a lot more activity for the SAL. The highway clean up is coming up. Also, our annual Golf Tournament is coming in June. We could use help with finding sponsors, prizes and players, of course. Keep your eyes out for the sign up sheet and if you have any questions contact Tim at the club. Thanks to everyone for continuing to support the SAL steak dinners. They will continue in March and April on the first Friday of the month. Also, spaghetti night is on the third Friday. Hope to see you there. The SAL is sponsoring pool tournaments on Sunday afternoons again this year. They will be held on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. so come on out and show us what you ve got. We need volunteers to help with our breakfasts in March and April, so come on out and help if you can. The Legion birthday dinner is March 18th at 7:00 p.m. Come on out and enjoy and celebrate all the great vets who make it possible for us to enjoy our great Post. That s all for now. Hope to see you all at our next meeting on March 5th. God bless our troops and keep them safe. Chris McQueen, Commander Unit 10 Auxiliary Our meetings for the next two months will be held on Tuesday, March 3rd and April 1 at 7:00 p.m. I would like to thank Karen Wessling for making the Bronco Boas. We made $60 for the Dept. Junior Auxiliary. Our Unit will add $40 to help with the postage to mail their stuff to the troops. We also donated pillows and personal items to their program. Our donations also included $100 to the SAL to help with their mailing to Post #0 Adjutant Major Alan Smith s troops in Kuwait. The Legion Birthday Dinner will be held on Tuesday, March 18th at 6:00 p.m. Auxiliary members are asked to bring salads and the Auxiliary will provide the birthday cake. The Kids Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Easter Sunday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m. for kids 10 yrs. old and under. Please use the sign-up sheet at the Post to give us a good number of kids. We will be doing end-of year reports in April. Anyone who has donated hours or any other donations, please contact me (Susan) at 303-499-3671. Election of new officers will be held in May so I will be reminding you again in the next newsletter. Please think about running for an office. Our breakfasts are doing well and we can always use help. The money we help our Unit with our programs. Thanks for your support. Susan Palmer, President Looks like the groundhog has issued us a few more weeks of cold weather, but with a little patience, spring will soon be here. We ve got some new twists in store for March and April. Check out your calendar and look for posters at the club and information on the board in the lounge. Karaoke and Friday night dinners will continue to bring us together for some good times and good food. We hope to see you here. Don t forget the Legion Birthday dinner is on March 18th at 7:00 p.m. Also, there will be no trap shooting on Saturday, from March 22 through May 7. Ann, Pam, Tim, Sandy, Susan & Tina Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, April 20 2:00 pm For kids ages 10 and under Bring your own basket!

VFW Post 807 We had our Post meeting on February 8th this month due to bad weather. Our District 3 meeting was held at the Evans Post on the 12th of January. We gave out awards to our Patriot Pen and VOD. There was a good attendance at both. If you know a veteran who wants to join please bring him to the meeting. Ken and I attended a steak dinner that is featured at Post 10 on the first Friday of every month. It was very good! Dates to remember: The District 3 meetings coming up are March 9th at Post 1771 in Lafayette; April 13th at Post 41 in Loveland, and Post 807 the March 1st. Hope all our members are well and staying warm this winter. Let us know if there are those who need our help. We are selling 2014 calendars again this year for $20. If you want one see Tim at the bar. Willard Wells, Commander Boys State 2014 The Colorado Boys State 2014 program is underway! Our goal is to sponsor 250 high school juniors who wish to learn more about our government. We can reach this goal through direct involvement within each post. Many well-known celebrities have attended Boys State, including Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney and Neil Armstrong. This will be the 65th year of the program, which will be held during the second week in June at CSU Pueblo. If you, or anyone you know, has ever attended Boys State, you may be invited to participate in ceremonies for the anniversary event in June. Wayne Fuqua has been named Post 10 s Boys State chairman. We need a few more volunteers to be on his committee. For those wanting to know what to expect, we have invited Past National Commander Tom Bock to visit our post on Tuesday, March 4. He will give a detailed presentation during our 7 pm Legionnaire membership meeting. Please consider helping out by contributing to this vital program. For local information, or to volunteer your services, you may contact Wayne Fuqua at (303) 527-3139 or fuqua.wc@gmail.com. We still continue having our Proms at the tropical resort of Boulder, although we have had to bring in the brass monkies, we forgot one and he now speaks in a very high voice. Congratulations to Walt Weber for wining last Prom s drawing. Too bad he wasn t there to collect it. Until next time, stay warm. Rich Eskew, Chef de Gare

DAV Chapter 10 Our Chapter is now barely operating. We have no scheduled meetings and then only when we can get a quorum of three or more members. Please help! We need a few active DAV members. Our Chapter roster shows about 50 DAV members residing in the Boulder area. Although a third of them are over 80 years of age, there remains plenty to step forward and continue their active duty by participating in this chapter s activities. Please consider helping your fellow veterans. Contact me at 303-494-2013 or email camellk@yahoo.com. The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free personal income tax preparation (both Federal and State) for people 60 years or older. It is a free, accurate and efficient way to file your annual taxes. By appointment only (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) at West Senior Center, 909 Arapahoe Ave. Call 303-441-3148 for an appointment. I have been affiliated with this program as a counselor, instructor and district coordinator for over 25 years. I recommend it highly. It is accurate and did I mention, it is free? Again, if you are qualified, please step up and be counted. Help us out!
