WOMEN S SEASON IN REVIEW The 2006 season was one marked by promise for the Liberty women s tennis team. Not only did the Lady Flames post their first-ever Big South Tournament match win with their first-round victory over High Point, but they garnered four all-conference team honors and completed the season with a 10-9 overall record and a 3-4 conference mark. Coming into the campaign, the team looked to junior Jonita Randolph to provide stability and success at the No. 1 singles position, as well as to provide help on the doubles side of competition. Randolph did not falter, posting 20 singles wins on the season, including a tournament victory in her flight at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational. This success earned Randolph her second All-Big South singles honor, as well as putting her in the record book as having the most career wins in the six-year history of Liberty Women s Tennis. Randolph s success also extended to doubles, as she won 13 matches and earned all-conference honors with partner Martyna Hanusz. Hanusz, a two-year veteran of Liberty tennis, became part of one of the best doubles teams in the conference while teaming with Randolph. Together, the duo won six-straight matches at one point in the season and, with that level of success, Hanusz earned her first All-Big South honor. In addition to these two collegiate tennis veterans, the team also saw success from other sources. Firstyear player Dina Senkina far exceeded expectations. Playing from the No. 2 singles position, Senkina went 21-4, including a 17-1 mark during the spring season. Those 21 singles victories are the most single-season in program history. Another transfer also had a solid season, as North Dakota native Erica Fredstrom posted a better than.500 record playing at No. 3 singles. Towards the lower part of the singles lineup, freshman Ekaterina Kuznetsova proved to be a key part of the future of the women s tennis team, posting a 5-1 record at No. 5 singles and winning five of her final six matches. Fellow freshman Livia Branco also showed promise. The team as a whole began their spring season with a difficult non-conference slate. After dropping their first two matches, at home versus UNC Greensboro and on the road against Davidson, the squad rebounded with wins over Mary Washington, Atlantic-10 power George Washington, and a 7-0 shutout of Virginia Intermont. On March 11, the women s team began Big South conference play against eventual tournament runnerup Coastal Carolina. After dropping a 5-2 decision to the Chanticleers, Liberty suffered a close 4-3 setback to the Lady Buccaneers of Charleston Southern. The team split its next four matches, leaving them with a 5-6 overall record heading into their March 28 match against Birmingham-Southern. The match was a disappointing setback, both in terms of the 6-1 overall loss as well as individually. After winning 11-straight matches to start the spring, Senkina dropped a three-set match at No. 2 singles, which would prove to be her only defeat of the spring. Senkina would go on to win her final six matches and was taken to three sets once more all year. Despite the disappointment of that day in Alabama, the team rebounded well from the defeat, going on to play their best tennis of the season. From March 30- April 7, the Lady Flames won four-consecutive matches, including 4-3 wins over conference foes Radford and High Point, and a 6-1 rout of the Howard Lady Bison. April 9 brought the team to a home match versus conference power Winthrop. The Lady Flames dropped the match by a 5-2 count to finish the regular season with a 9-8 overall mark. This gave the Lady Flames a first-round date with the Panthers of High Point in the Big South Championship. The 4-2 result was one of the most important triumphs in program history. Behind singles wins from Randolph, Kuznetsova and Senkina, Liberty won its first Big South Conference tournament match and moved on to the semifinals of the tournament. The Lady Flames season would end there, as they were defeated by No. 2-seed Coastal Carolina. Despite the loss, the Liberty women s tennis team clearly showed great promise during the season and hopes for bigger and better things during the upcoming campaign.
