MEDICAL SERVICES IN PANAMA Ministry of Health, Social Security Fund, Private Medicine

The Public Health System of the Republic of Panama is ruled by the Ministry of Health (MINSA for its acronym in Spanish). MINSA is the regulatory body and Rector of the Na5onal Health System, which also includes private medical services and paramedics. You can use all of MINSA s facili5es for a nominal fee. Services are not refused to anybody in Panama, ci5zen or foreigner The quality of services provided varies and it is very crowded. For elec5ve care wait 5mes can add up to months. For emergency services you can also expect long wait 5mes. The system suffers from chronic shortages of equipment, materials and in some areas of the country there is a shortage of medical personnel. Use it in life or death situa5ons but try to have other op5ons for anything else

Social Security Fund (Caja del Seguro Social CSS) This organiza5on provides services exclusively for people affiliated with Panamanian Social Security You have to be working and paying social security to be part of the system You cannot use their services as a foreigner unless you start working or start a business

Private Medicine Private medicine in Panama is of the highest standards There are many facili5es throughout the country with varying levels of services The most important and fully equipped are in the capital city Most Doctors are affiliated to one or more of the major clinics and hospitals

Private PracKce and FaciliKes in the Republic of Panama In Panama private medicine, in a private hospital or Doctor s office is available to anyone who can pay out of pocket or has medical insurance Many interna5onal medical insurance policies are accepted but it can be cumbersome Unless the Medical facility has a valid contract with your insurer you will be asked to pay and request reimbursement The same applies to professional services provided by doctors.
