Coach 5

HEAD COACH PETERS 35-20 // 4TH SEASON // EAST STROUDSBURG 98 Jason Peters was named the 10th wrestling coach in the storied history of the University of Pittsburgh s program in April of 2013 following 10 seasons on the Pitt coaching staff, including ninth as the top assistant under former head coach Rande Stottlemyer. The 2016-17 season will be his fourth year at the helm of the program and owns a 31-18 (.633) dual meet record. Peters can boast an impressive résumé of success with the Pitt Wrestling program at the NCAA Championships. The Panthers have sent 70 wrestlers, 20 in the past three seasons, to the National Tournament under Peters tutelage, including a national champion in Keith Gavin (2008). During his tenure with the Panthers, Peters has helped lead the wrestling program to new heights as Pitt captured six Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships (three regular season titles and three tournament championships) as well as the 2014 ACC Dual season title. Pitt also boasts an impressive 105 dual wins in Peter s 10 seasons as an assistant and has crowned 33 individual EWL champions with Peters on staff. In his first season at the helm, Peters continued the Panthers success by leading them to a third consecutive top-25 season finish after Pitt finished 22nd at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, following a 13-3 record and a perfect 6-0 conference record in the program s first year in the ACC. Prior to Pitt, Peters was with Harvard University, where he was an assistant coach with the Crimson for the 2001-02 season. While at Harvard, he helped lead individual workouts for the wrestlers while training himself for freestyle competitions. Peters was also an instructor for the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club in Boston, Mass. In his spare time, Peters was a personal wellness trainer and promoter for the Boston Sports Club at the Harvard University Recreational Department. There, he educated members by providing specialized wellness programs designed for specific individual needs, incorporating exercise and nutrition. Peters also served as the head wrestling coach for the Massachusetts Cadet and Junior National Team. He worked directly with the USA Wrestling state director and headed his team to the national competition in Fargo, N.D. His team was the first in 10 years from Massachusetts to compete in the Cadet and Junior Nationals. From 1998-2001, Peters was the head assistant wrestling coach at Princeton University where he served as recruiting coordinator as well as helped with marketing, fundraising and the development of practice plans and strategies. Prior to Princeton, Peters gained experience as an assistant wrestling coach at his alma mater, East Stroudsburg University. In 1997-98, Peters assisted the coaching staff at East Stroudsburg with training the team s wrestlers for competition. He is a 1998 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a bachelor s degree in movement studies and exercise science with a concentration in exercise physiology. The 2014-15 campaign was just as fortuitous as Pitt finished in the top-25 again by placing 21 in the 2015 NCAA Championship and a second consecutive runner-up finish in the ACC Championship. The 2015-16 season featured a 10-7 dual meet record that was highlighted by upsets over then-ranked No. 15 Wisconsin (25-9) and No. 20 Virginia (19-17) and nine straight weeks ranked in the top 25. Pitt sent six wrestlers for the 18th time in program history and will return five to the 2016-17 campaign. The team success has been matched by the accolades Peters wrestlers have garnered. The most notable comes in the form of recently graduated Tyler Wilps, a two-time All-American who became the first Pitt wrestler to be NCAA National runner-up since 2008. Peters also oversaw the development of fellow former graduates Max Thomusseit, a four-time NCAA qualifier, 2015 ACC Champion and 2013 EWL Champion, and had six wrestlers qualify to the 2015 tournament following an eight win season. 6
