INNOVATION AWARDS A Project of One Great Community 2014-2015 GRANT PROGRAM

The Community Health Innovation Awards are supported by The University of Alabama at Birmingham and UAB s Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (National Institutes of Health Grant UL1 TR000165)

Let s work together to create new ways to make Birmingham even greater! 1

We are One Great Community. We share the same obstacles and want the best for our communities. We asked our community leaders about the biggest concerns our communities face. We struggle with abandoned homes, lack of sidewalks and walking trails, crime, and various health issues, like high blood pressure and diabetes. Despite these issues, we each continuously strive for community improvement and propose new opportunities for growth in education, advances in health care, safety in our communities, and strengthening the most valuable asset of our community its people. Instead of tackling these problems alone, we should come together to improve our outcomes. By sharing ideas and imagining new possibilities, maybe we can create the impact we need to make our communities better for our children. Join us as we work toward a brighter future for all of us by trying new things and thinking differently about the possibilities we can create for ourselves. The Community Health Innovation Awards offer us the chance to work together to tackle the biggest problems that plague us all, our entire Birmingham community. 2

INNOVATION AWARDS BACKGROUND About Us The UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), www.uab.edu/ccts, a NIH-funded center that is part of the Clinical and Translational Sciences Awards national network, was established to streamline new discoveries in order to impact our lives more quickly. The CCTS is organized around several components to address this translational process from drug discovery to community engagement. One Great Community, the community engagement component of the CCTS, was established to build a balanced relationship with the greater Birmingham community with the goal of developing trust around biomedical research. About the Grant Award One Great Community established the Community Health Innovation Awards as an annual grant competition for area organizations in the greater Birmingham area. The Community Health Innovation Awards are envisioned as a way for participants to think boldly and creatively about solutions to on the ground health challenges communities face, to work in partnership with some of the best minds in our area, and to collaborate with local businesses to complete a project. These awards are a way for UAB, local leaders and our communities to share resources and expertise. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 will be awarded to local organizations whose ideas creatively and innovatively address community issues. 2013 CHIA Participants engaging in Workshop activities 3
