May 2015 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be held on Monday, June 1 st at the courthouse meeting room in Council Grove at 7:00 p.m. 4-H Foundation Banquet A big thank you goes to the 4-Hers who presented at the Morris County 4-H Foundation Banquet. Thanks also goes to the 4-Hers that served the meal. We appreciate all of your hard work. You all did a great job!! Add/Drop Deadline The deadline to add or drop a project is Tuesday, May 1 st. Please make any changes you want to projects on 4-H Online. Horse IDs 4-Hers who wish to show their horse at the county fair, district horse show, or Kansas State Fair must have their horse ID forms completed and signed by May 1 st. Morris County 4-H Foundation Scholarships Once again the Morris County 4-H Foundation is offering scholarships to present or past Morris County 4-H members. Also, please note that students can apply and receive the scholarship twice. Applications are available in the Extension Office, on our website or from your school counselor. The application deadline is May 1 st. Konley Harding Memorial Scholarship Applications are now being accepted for a $1000 academic scholarship in memory of Konley Harding. Applicants must be a current or former 4-H member and a graduating high school senior planning to pursue higher education at a four year college, community college, or vocational technical school. Preference will be given to applicants seeking an agricultural related field of study. Applications are due May 15 th and are available in the Extension Office or on the website at www.flinthills.ksu.edu Archery Safety Day The Morris County Shooting Sports Archery Safety Day is scheduled for Sunday, May 3 rd, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Old Armory building in Council Grove. This safety day is required to participate in the project. New participants need to attend and those who did not attend archery meetings last year.
Shooting Sports Headed to Nationals! For the very first time the Morris County 4-H Shooting Sports team is headed to Nationals in Rogers, Arkansas July 3,4,5. Congratulations to the BB team members of: Makenzie Downes, Carly Wells, Erin Jones, Treyser King, Daleyna King and alternates Chris Jones and Brodey King. Clothing Project Meetings The 4-Hers enrolled in the clothing project have been busy attending project meetings in March and April. In March, 4- Hers learned about jeans and in April they learned about ironing and laundry care. County Food Project Meetings There will be several county-wide foods project meetings held in the upcoming weeks. Read below for more details. Wednesday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. - Community Building at the Morris County Fairgrounds 4-Hers will have the opportunity to make easy summer lunches, including pigs in a blanket, cream cheese rollups, and chicken salad. Each participant is asked to bring $2 to the meeting. Please RSVP to the Extension Office by May 13th. Saturday, June 13th at 8:30 a.m. - National Festival of Breads, Manhattan, KS 4-Hers will attend the National Festival of Breads at the Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center in Manhattan, KS. The National Festival of Breads will give 4-Hers the opportunity to attend bread baking workshops, sample different breads, and see BBQ workshops. After having lunch in Manhattan, participants will return back to Council Grove at approximately 1:30 p.m. Please RSVP to the Extension Office by June 8th. Wednesday, June 24 at 6:00 p.m. - Community Building at the Morris County Fairgrounds 4-Hers will spend time getting ready for the Morris County Fair. They will also have the chance to make a drop cookie and a bar cookie. Participants are asked to bring $2 to the meeting. Please RSVP to the Extension Office by June 17.
Morris County Fair The dates of the Morris County Fair dates are July 18 July 27. A complete fair schedule can be found in the April 2015 newsletter. Below is a list of details to note about the 2015 fair. 4-H and Open Class Entry Check-In: The check-in for all 4-H and Open Class nonperishable entries and livestock will be held on Friday, July 24 th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Check in for perishable items only (food and horticulture entries) will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25 th. 4-H and Open Horse Show: The 4-H and Open Horse show will be held on Thursday, July 23 rd, during the Morris County Fair. Pre-entry will be required for all 4-H AND Open Class entries. Banners: Beginning in 2015, banners will not be exhibited at the Kansas State Fair. A class will remain at the Morris County Fair for 4-H clubs to exhibit banners. Entomology: There will be major updates to the entomology section of the Morris County Fair Book in order to align with the Kansas State Fair guidelines. Please make sure to read your fair book when it arrives or contact the Extension Office. Morris County Fair T-Shirts: The Morris County Fair t-shirts will be available to order soon. They will be yellow with the fair theme of Sew It, Grow It, Show It. 4-Hers and families need to order through their club leaders. Orders are due by May 1 st. The prices are as follows: Youth S to Adult XL - $7; Adult 2XL - $8.50; Adult 3XL - $10; Adult 4XL - $11.50; Adult 5Xl - $13 Sunny Hills 4-H Camp The 2015 camp dates are June 15-18 at Rock Springs Ranch 4-H Center. Camp is open to 4-Hers who have completed 3 rd through 7 th grade. Registration forms are attached to this newsletter and are available on the website at flinthills.ksu.edu. The cost to attend 4-H camp is $175. However, with the support of the Morris County 4-H Foundation and the Flint Hills Rural Electric Cooperative, 4-Hers will be able to attend camp for $45. Registration forms and payment are due in the Extension Office by May 8 th. Camp Counselors Camp counselors are needed for 4-H camp again this year. In order to serve in this leadership role, counselors must have completed their freshman year of high school and the VIP process. Preference, however, will be given to 4-Hers who have completed their sophomore year. Applications are available in the Extension Office and are due May 8 th. Counselor training will begin on June 14 th and camp will be held June 15-18. This is a great leadership opportunity for older 4-Hers, so consider applying!! Agility Workshop & Contest Riley County Kennel Club is hosting a 4-H Agility Invitational Workshop and Contest on Saturday, June 13th in Manhattan. Registration is due June 6th. 4-H Campference 2015 Campference will be held May 31 st June 3 rd at Rock Springs Ranch 4-H Center and is for youth between the ages of 12 and 14 (before January 1, 2015). Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities of Rock Springs. This is a great transitional opportunity, as tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas. Registration details can be found at kansas4h.org. The cost to attend is $265. The registration deadline is May 1 st. Because of limited space, interested participates are encouraged to register early! Remember to Send Thank You Notes! Please remember to send a thank you note to the Morris County 4-H Foundation if you are attending 4-H Camp or Discovery Days. The foundation is providing much support for Morris County 4-Hers to attend these summer activities! Additionally, if you are attending 4-H Camp, remember to send a thank you to the Flint Hills Rural Electric Cooperative as they are helping to support $10 of the registration cost for each 4-Her to attend camp. Thank you notes can be dropped off or mailed to the Extension Office! Sewing Camps The 2015 statewide sewing camps have been scheduled for this summer. This year, 4-Hers will have the opportunity to create a garment from a pattern during camp. Participants will explore new sewing concepts and improve their current sewing skills. Junior participants (age 9-12) and senior participants (age 13 and older) will attend camp at K-State Salina, work on touch control sewing machines, and receive assistance from teen counselors and textile knowledgeable adults. Junior camp will be held June 25-27 and senior camp will be held June 27-30. All fabrics, supplies, and equipment will be provided for youth to construct their garment. Junior participants will choose from an apron, pull-over shirt, or pants. Senior participants will choose between a tailored vest or silky shirt. The junior registration cost $170 and the senior registration cost is $215. Space is limited, so 4-Hers are encouraged to register early. To register, go to http://www.cvent.com/d/2rqkr0. The registration deadline is May 8 th. North Central District Horse Show The North Central District Horse Show has been scheduled for July 1, 2015 at the Saline Co. Expo Center, Ag. Hall, Salina. Horse Judging Camps The Kansas State University Horse Judging Team will host two separate camps to assist youth in learning to judge horses and give oral reasons. Emphasis will be placed on the placing of classes commonly seen in Kansas judging contests. Objectives: (1) Learn about evaluating horses in different classes, (2) Improve oral reasons, (3) Learn easy note taking skills, (4) Gain individual instruction, (5) Sharpen presentation skills. Classes covered include Stock Type Halter, Western Pleasure, and Hunter Under Saddle. *Camp registration fee is $35/person and must be paid by May 10, 2015. Advanced Camp - June 3-4, 2015 The advanced camp is designed for youth with some experience judging horses and would like to learn more about note taking and oral reasons. National Festival of Breads The National Festival of Breads, sponsored by King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast, and Kansas Wheat, will be held Saturday, June 13 th, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn & Conference Center in Manhattan, KS. The day s activities will include bread baking workshops, door prizes, bread sampling, and BBQ workshops with Rod Gray of Pellet Envy. Admission to the festival is free with the donation of a canned good. More information can be found at nationalfestivalofbreads.com. Biggest Soybean Plant Contest Grow the biggest soybean plant and win the K-State Agronomy Beanstalk Award. There are two divisions: Division I: 9th grade - 12th grade and Division 2: Kindergarten - 8th grade. 2015 marks the 8th annual competition at the Kansas State University Manhattan campus. All participants will receive a Willie and the Beanstalk t-shirt. For more information stop by the Extension Office or visit Willie and the Beanstalk. Willie and the Beanstalk is sponsored by the KSU Department of Agronomy. Ag Camp The Flint Hills District is excited to announce a new camp they are helping organize at White Memorial Camp. Ag Camp: Seeing & Being in Agriculture, will be held in August 2015. Junior Camp will be Aug 2-5, and Senior Camp 5-8. We are needing camp counselors. If interested please contact the Extension Office for an application. Applications are due July 15 th.
