June 2018 News From Lt Fred L. Kent VFW Post 7907 Poway, CA From the Commander Comrades, In this Issue From the Commander 1 From the Post Chaplain 2 Happy 243 rd Birthday June 14, 2018 This will be my final article as the Post Commander. It has been an amazing two years with its ups and downs, (mostly ups). I need to thank my Officers for all the hard work they have done to help me during this time. I also want to thank the Comrades of the Post and the Auxiliary for their support, I couldn t have done the job without you. Three people who deserve special thanks are Bill Kimble, Alan Helton and Karen Lewellen, they have gone above and beyond what is needed to keep the Post operating. Looking to the future, Commander-elect Bill Morrison hopes to have a year with a lot of activity and events, please give him your full support and have fun and enjoy the fellowship of your Comrades at the Post. In Comradeship, Bob VFW Post 7907 Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Day - Saturday 18 August, 2018 As many of you know, our nation has been honoring our Vietnam Veterans as noted in the Presidential Proclamation at: https://www.whitehouse. gov/presidential-actions/presidential-proclamation-commemorating-50thanniversary-vietnam-war/ The President signed into law the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017, designating March 29 of each year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Have an article for The Patriot? Please submit your articles no later than the 21 st of each month. Send your submission to VFW7907@gmail.com with Newsletter Submission in the subject line. Editor: Sara Salazar Saluting veterans and flag image in masthead supplied by istockphoto.com/lifejourneys VFW Post 7907 has designated Saturday 18 August 2018 as the day we will honor our Vietnam Veterans with recognition of our WWII and Korean War Veterans. Officially, The Commemoration recognizes all who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of duty location; and their families. We make no distinction between veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or who were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War period. All were called to serve and none could self-determine where they were stationed. continued next page The Patriot June 2018 1

Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Day - continued That said, I am asking that if you served during this period, please let me (tbehrle@gmail.com) and Fernando Law (bbmjjnanie@hotmail.com) know ahead of time. Of course, we would like to know if you plan on attending but more importantly, we are seeking your input on what you would like to see included. Around the Post Burger Burn Friday May 4, 2018 Please forward your name, conflict, rank/rate/mos so we can ensure you receive personal recognition. Thanks, Tom Behrle We had a great turn out for our first Friday Night Burger Burn. All Gave Some. Some Gave All. From the Post Chaplain Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Luke 12:32-34 The true treasure that we can place in money bags which do not grow old, is our love and caring for each other. Each time we help a Veteran or their family, we store up wealth where the thief cannot find it. Thanks to Bill Kimble for putting together such a great deal & grillin up all those delicious burgers. God designed us to achieve true wealth in His Kingdom, love and kindness for each other. Father God, We give thanks to You for allowing us to be Your heart. To be Your arms and hands. We ask for You to open doors for us and that we have the courage to step though those doors and bring love to our fellow Veterans and glory and honor to You. Joint Honor Guard The Joint Honor Guard conducted three missions and three operations since last report: The JHG was contacted by North County Prayer Breakfast to provide a Color Guard on the National Day of Prayer at the Escondido Center for the Arts. Over 340 people were in attendance. The Honor Guards assigned were SrA Sam LaManna, Eagle Scout Wyatt Vaineharrison, Skipper Michele Vaineharrison and Gunner Vaineharrison. The JHG was contacted by Frank Peralta, Past Commander VFW Post 7420 for US Army, Vietnam Veteran SGT Nicholas Hernandez and asked to provide honors at his interment at Miramar National on 24 May. The Honor Guards assigned were SP4 Alan Davies, Sgt Bob Crosby and Gunner Vaineharrison. About our Veteran: SGT Nicholas Hernandez served in Vietnam with the US Army s 4 th Infantry Division from 1967 to 1968 and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. Throughout his service in Vietnam, Nick conducted combat operations ranging from the western Central Highlands along the border between Cambodia and Vietnam to Qui Nhơn on the South China Sea. He experienced intense combat against People s Army of Vietnam regular forces in the mountains surrounding Kontum in the autumn of 1967. During the Tet Offensive in 1968, Nick and his fellow Ivy Soldiers were assigned the largest area of operations of any division in Vietnam, the Ivy division was charged with screening the border of South Vietnam as the first line of defense against infiltration down the Ho Chi Minh trail through Laos and Cambodia, and, to preempt any offensive on the more populated lowlands. Triple canopy jungles, extreme heat, and seasonal monsoons were constant challenges to the division as were the North Vietnamese Regulars and Viet Cong. After leaving the Army, Nick continued to serve his community as the co-founder of the San Diego Ronald McDonald House. Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers to you. They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God. 3 John 1:5-6 I want to thank you all for doing an outstanding and a grand military manner ceremony. Thank you very much and god bless all of you. God bless America. - Frank Peralta, Past Commander VFW Post 7420 continued next page 4 The Patriot June 2018

The JHG completed a four-month training and certification process for Trail Life Troop CA3923. About our Veteran: Having survived the horrors of a Nazi occupied Germany during WWII, and the brutal occupation by the Soviets afterwards, Joe Engelhardt, escaped from communist East Germany in 1952 and arrived in New York in 1954, to live with his aunt. Six months later, he was drafted into the US Army. After Basic Training, he was slated to go to South Korea, but at the last minute, was ordered ironically back to the region he fled from. He was stationed in southern Germany, where he was part of the occupation forces to stem the expansion of the Soviets. Joe served until 1956 with an artillery unit and was assigned as a 155mm selfpropelled howitzer driver, where he achieved the rank of Specialist 3rd Class. Joe left the Army in 1956, when his draft enlistment was up, and became a gear cutter in New Jersey until 1982, at which time he moved his family to San Diego, where he work for General Dynamics, building the Tomahawk cruise missile and manufacturing space and airplane portions. He retired in 1993, and with wife and lived in Rancho Bernardo. In 2015, cancer took his wife of 60 years. Joe was joined with her again last month. Joe has three sons, CAPT Engelhardt (USN), the youngest at 49, a son in New Jersey and another son in Spring Valley, San Diego, who is a retired Police Officer. Joe also has two grandchildren. One grandson will be an Army 2LT next month, and one is a Navy midshipman at USD. Service runs deep in his family. My brothers and I are VERY grateful of the honor you have bestowed on our father and family. You and your team of professionals were spectacular! So impressive. All the best to you and God bless you. - CAPT Rob Engelhardt, USN continued next page The Patriot June 2018 5
